The US remake of the French movie La Femme Nikita, called Point of No Return, was pretty good.
It was amazing to me that someone would even try to remake Kurasawa's classic The Seven Samurai, yet The Magnificent Seven also was a tremendous movie. It was a great story and they did a fantastic job of adapting bandit-ridden post-feudal Japan to bandit-ridden Mexico in the second half of the 19th century. Both are fantastic movies and well worth watching!
Generally, though, recent US remakes of earlier US movies have generally been awful. The 1951 version of The Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic, one of the finest science fiction movies ever made. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who understands the significance of Klaatu barada nikto. However, the remake was so unwatchable that I did not even try. Miracle on Ice with Karl Malden and Ed Marinaro (ironically, a star football player at Cornell) was so much better than Miracle with Kurt Russell.
The only remake I recall in this more limited category that was as good as the original is The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3.
So I guess "the exceptions validate the overall generality of the rule" does apply.
