Re: RPI 2011-12 Part III: Our Goal is to be Offensive

Were these injuries sustained during games or in practice? We seem to pile up our injuries when we are not even playing.
I'm pretty sure they were in game injuries. I believe Grosenick has been sick. As far as practice injuries are concerned, I think they are common if for no other reason than they spend a lot more time practicing than playing in games.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part III: Our Goal is to be Offensive

I didn't see a game thread or I may have missed it. Union has also been bitten by the injury / illness bug as both Stevens and Grosenick are hurt or sick. Also Kyle Bodie is apparently out and his brother Mat is questionable along with Matt Hatch. Not looking for sympathy here as RPI's issues are well documented in this area. Is it fair to say that this is a much bigger game for RPI than Union? I think a win by RPI could really turn their season around whereas a Union loss though it would be an upset or sorts would be of less significance. I'm not sure why, but I'm not getting the same buzz from this game as I always would. Maybe there have been too many meetings lately or maybe it's just that neither team seems to be in top form at the moment.

I didn't start one because there was one started last week http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?98045-Festivus-Faceoff-Lake-Placid.

:p

Did you confuse yourself with someone else? I thought you were "he who looks for any reason to get his post count up. *" :p

I thought Ralph was referring to He Who Must Be Ignored.

* and will post even without a reason if need be.

Yes! :D

Agree-that does make sense. For most injuries I agree but concussions? It seems to me the head in practice just has to be off limits. Just my usual 2¢

Speaking of concussions, Doc, did you read this week's series in the NY Times on Derek Boorgard? Very disturbing. Sorry if I digress.

For those who purchased their tickets at the HFH for Saturday in L.P, what section is the RPI contingent in? Thanks.

It is my single worst nightmare...there's a video related to the article on youtube. My heart breaks for his family

I don't normally sit in a seat so you can find me bouncing around in the raccoon coat...I resemble a momma Kodiak...who else will be there?

Extremely disturbing-but something not unknown in medical circles for a long time. I am not a neurologist-but have been involved in the treatment of concussions for many years. I have always felt that the effects of concussions are more than cummulative-they seem to worsen in a geometric progression. I am not sure if one ever completely recovers from a severe grade 3 concussion (current classification-in my old medical school days these were classified as grade 4). Too many players in the past were rushed back into action while still experiencing symptoms.

If it's any help-I suffered 1 major and 2 minor concussions in my early years. I turned out to be pretty much OK-but sometimes I cannot tie my shoes properly and quite often forget who I am married to.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part III: Our Goal is to be Offensive

Are you serious? It really doesnt matter who we play at this point. No clear standouts. We have a lot of really good players that need to pull it together more as a team. But at this point, I dont see anyone racking up the points or standing out. So, for the players that may follow this board. Its an even playing field. Keep working hard and more cohesively as a team. I feel a BIG W! Good luck this weekend.

If any of the players follow this board, they will not be affected by any of our input on this board. Only the coaches affect whether they play or not (this is a concept that seemed to elude a certain poster whose name shall not be mentioned...). The Olympic ice sheet lends itself to the faster skater...I'm fully aware of the skill sets at play here and even I wouldn't be offended by what works...

I am not sure if this has been previously mentioned, but in his weekly college hockey column in today's Gazette, Ken Schott reports:

"Saturday's Festivus Faceoff hockey double-header in Lake Placid will be available to watch online. The website www.whiteface.com/events/tv.php will show the games. The video stream is free".

Free is good. Thanks for the info.
Also, don't forget the RPI game is listed for 4PM. See you all on the game thread tomorrow,

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part III: Our Goal is to be Offensive

I know this is an old topic, but I just want to demonstrate the foolishness of a goalie's W-L record:

Tuesday, Carolina played Calgary and was trailing 6-4. They pulled their goalie to try and bring the game within one. Cam Ward had played the whole game up to that point and had given up 6 goals on 32 shots. Jerome Iginla pots the empty-netter and the game is now 7-4 Calgary. The Canes replace Cam Ward with Mike Murphy, making his first ever NHL appearance. Over the course of the last 1:09, Murphy makes two saves without letting in any goals and the Canes put two pucks past Kiprusoff for a 7-6 final score.

Murphy now sports the following line: 1 GP; 0-1-0 Record; 0.00 GAA; 1.000 Sv%

That's right, he got a loss in his NHL debut without letting in a single goal (and the game ended in regulation, it's not like both goalies pitched a shutout and he lost in a shootout). So, anytime that anyone wants to bring up a goalie's W-L record as a reason why one goalie is better than another, this will be Exhibit A as why that's a foolish idea.
