RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I only go back to 1993 when following Engineer hockey. I believe that the one thing that has been missing on the coaching staff is a sports psychologist.
We have had many talented teams in the 90s and again the last few years, and yet we don't seem to be able to believe in ourselves.
SA may be the most positive person I have ever met, but it does not seem to get to his players.
Also, it is time to let the referees do their thing. Both Fridgen and Appert have been driven crazy by the refs, and I totally understand it (They drive me crazy too). But it does no good to lose your cool behind the bench.
We need to calm down and play to our potential.

I liken the current state of the team to a baseball player (slugger) starting the season in a batting slump. EngineerHockeyFan makes a good point...that psychology does come into play; in this instance, as soon as the floodgate opens, it WILL be contagious. Coach Appert knows what he's doing and it will come around. This will be a successful season...the young men on this team will do great.

Leave it to a woman to put in all in the proper context. And to think-she can also cook!;)

There are times when you must suck it up and accept that the game is not called in your favor (whether justified or not). However, there are also times when the coach needs to stand up for his players and present an argument. If you want to talk sports psychology, the message it gives your players is, "Although I am in control of this team, I will stand behind any of your actions that I feel is warranted." I would think players want support from their coaches.

To stick with baseball for a moment longer, the record shows that on June 17, the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4.

In case anybody's worried that it is impossible to come back from anything nearly as bad as a 1-8 start, let it be noted that the losing pitcher in that June 17 game was World Series hero-to-be Chris Carpenter. The loss dropped his record to 1-7.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

There are a lot of problems, and I still expect things to work out. I agree that the junior and senior classes are made up mainly of grinders and defensive players -- not scorers. For some reason, I expected the frosh to lead the team from the start, but that does not happen these days, although it once could happen, and I know it.
You can probably add the sophomore class to that category of grinders and defensive players as well, with the possible exception of Higgs.

Heres HF's Dallas Stars depth analysis for fall 2011:

Mike Bergin returns to RPI in 2011-12, despite some injury troubles in the past, Bergin is a seasoned NCAA vet and is being counted to provide not only a steadying defensive presence but also locker room leadership. He is already 23, so time is beginning to become a factor for him but the Stars will get a look at a polished player before making a decision on offering him a contract.

*squee* Cardinals!

I think that Rogic has some goals and assists in him.

Exactly. Brock Higgs has not had a regular season goal yet this year (mostly because he was out). Once he gets one, he'll have a lot. Rogic has scored already, and I agree with AspyDad, I think he has a lot more in him. The one problem there is he is so fast he beats everyone (our team included) down to the opposing end and then has no support when he needs it. Our team is already looking a lot faster than we have the past few years, and I think it's something they're working on. We just need to be patient...

And all of their success achieved without Wainwright-who is arguably their number 1 starting pitcher and with having to admit early in the season that their number 1 closer (Franklin) just did not have it. You are 100% correct-a season cannot always be judged on the first handful of games.

I believe that the staff did a pretty good job developing Chase and York...just saying.

...and Pirri, D'A and Koudys. If anything, you might be able to say this staff has trouble developing the lesser players.

Rogic appears to me to be our reincarnation of Kelly Askew. A talented and incredibly fast skater (he had at least one more gear than evryone else) but who had puck control issues. If Rogic can just develop the ability to control his stick and the puck he will suddenly become a real threat instead of a potential threat.

Thought you weren't posting on this board until the end of the season? Gotta keep your promises, man.

Hello fans of RPI Hockey-

I just wanted to quickly touch base with you in regards to the Goals For Good project. In short, it's a competitive goal-a-thon between every team in the ECAC, and every team has partnered with a charity in close relation to their team, school, and or community. We're currently looking for more prizes, but as of now, there is $1,000 on the line going to the local food cupboard of the team that raises the most money. Please check out www.goalsforgood.org to learn more and support your team and their charity by way of their goals and wins.

Thank you,
Kevin McNamara
