Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Hi Everyone - Long time lurker / first time poster....I had originally decided to sign up last week to point out the possibility of a medical red shirt for JL, but it seems now the severity of his injury doesn't warrant that. I hope he and Brock are back in there this weekend!

Perhaps like some of you, I'm torn with respect to the slow start. On one hand it's fantastic to get our young team exposure to the best competition college hockey has to offer...but on the other, non-conference losses, no matter to whom, certainly won't help us on the other end of the season if we've turned things around and are fighting for national tournament consideration. Also, I'm a little worried about how the losses impact the confidence of our freshmen going forward - but I have a feeling Seth knows how to keep their heads on straight...

I try not to think about it...but...imagine the complexion of this team if we had D'Amigo and Pirri as juniors leading the offense and mentoring the younger players. Losing them, in my mind, has been a back breaker for this program - I just hope it bears fruit from a recruiting standpoint (and perhaps it already has ?). Anyway, looking for a big turnaround in the new few weeks - these guys are due !

First off, welcome to the boards! :)

Your concerns are most definitely warranted. As we saw in 2007-08, we played a similar NC schedule in terms of opponents (IceBreaker, Notre Dame twice, CC, Maine) and had difficulties. Although none of the players have game experience from this (as Malchuk was red-shirted this year, so he MAY have an inkling), Coach has been here with this team before, and I fully believe has learned from any mistakes he or his team has made, and will adjust accordingly.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Thanks to the graciousness of Troyboy and Aspydad, we have a spot in lot D for our tail to gate (that's the lot above HFH and next to the new facility...it has a name that always escapes me...). I don't know which spot it is, but I'm in a gray Escape. I am attempting to secure a special appearance or two but make no promises, as I have no influence whatsoever (and I'm NOT kidding) on the outcome of the request...there could be one young squire for a drive by or a slew of hooligans for a sweep through (or any combination thereof). Ralph: I hope you can make it and if you don't have a rental we'll come get you. I will also email the parents to see if any of them are willing to drop in...that might be nice for all of you to speak with the 'rents... I just wish Doc could be here to make the trifecta complete (yes...Ralph, Doc, and the RPI players are the holy trinity in this...the one continuum that supersedes all others...) I'm really not as concerned with the content of the tailgate as I think we'll all be more caught up with the camaraderie...I'm sure I'll be reminded if I've overlooked anything...we're gonna' have a great year, boys!!!

I will a rental car.

Welcome from here too. It looks like O'Grady is the only one who potentially is in a red shirt situation. Hopefully he will be back too.

I hope so, too. From what I can see, the most important player on our team from that year, I wouldn't say was even Pirri or D'Amigo, but Marty O'Grady. He's the one in there making the clutch plays, in addition to the little things that Coach stresses (at least from what we can tell in the press conferences).

Thank you, Brandon, for recommending him.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I tend to agree with the statement that great teams don't rebuild, they reload. Coach Appert has been building this program for a few years, and what we are seeing this year should not be surprising to anyone. Last year's graduating class was his first real recruit class. Their freshman year was trial by fire. Non-cons against Minnesota, BC, Notre Dame, Miami, Colorado College, Maine.... It was a grueling schedule, and it took its toll on the team. However, that same freshman class grew into last year's team, which handled their non-con schedule (albeit an easier one than 07-08), and earned an at large bid to the NCAA's.

Now that class has graduated, in addition to several (painful) early departures over the last two years. This is, for all intents and purposes, a rebuilding year. We have another young team, with a similarly grueling non-con schedule to the 07-08 campaign. However, this trend isn't purely cyclic. We again have a highly ranked recruiting class. This time, though, we have a core of seasoned veterans, who play Appert's system, and have experienced winning and making the tournament. Their leadership will carry the newer players on the team. I highly doubt we will have a repeat of 07-08, where the team struggled in ECAC play after a ridiculously tough non-conference schedule. Furthermore, I see this as an important transition point for the program. It feels like a rebuilding year right now, and the W-L record currently supports that. However, I strongly believe that we are transitioning to becoming a team that reloads instead of rebuilds. We continue to recruit phenomenal players, and even when players leave early, it ultimately fills the pipeline with more great players who want to do the same. I hope that the players look to this weekend as yet another opportunity to test their mettle against a very talented CC team. Regardless of the outcome, they will hopefully take the experience and use it as a spring board into conference play.

I really like the point about reloading vs. rebuilding. That really does seem to be the threshold that defines the great programs. If that what Seth is building, then our best is ahead of us (hopefully not too far ahead !)

Do we have any more information on the injuries? It would appear from what we heard that we will still be without the 3 this coming weekend.

I have heard nothing since then. Higgs and Laliberte could be back the following week. O'Grady is a big question mark.

O'Grady is my concern also-fingers heal and guys will be back if not this week then the next. Concussions are unpredictable-I know they will be careful with Marty and not rush him.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

My tail will be gating on Saturday. I'm still not sure if I'm going to be able to attend Friday night's game. I definitely will not be able to get there much earlier than puck drop, though.

babo / AspyDad / Troyboy, thanks for organizing this, and I'll hope to see most of you on Saturday.

PS, Babo, the "new facility" is called ECAV for East Campus Athletic Village.
babo deserves all the credit on this she is the tip of spear !!!!!!!!!!!

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone this weekend! And some home hockey after this week of exams and due dates...

I have class Friday afternoon, so I won't be able to get there until a little later...I agree with Ralph that picking a place to meet during intermission is a good idea for anyone who can't get there before the game!
