Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Claiming a team is worn out from an aggressive non-conference schedule is a cop out. If these guys were playing in the CHL they'd be playing 65+ games in the same length season. If they hope to play pro hockey they are talking 80+ games in the same length of time. Playing a couple of hard games early in the year, when you're playing two games a week with five days rest in between, and nearly a month off at Christmas, does not make an excuse for poor performance later in the season.

If the schedule results in injuries and those affect play, I can understand that. But a tough NC schedule alone is no excuse.

Just curious, when was the last time you saw a Major Junior game and how many have you seen?

So not seeing a Major Jr. Game is a disqualification for talking about the rigor of the schedule they play? Specious argument. Bottom line GR is right they are young men and if you asked them they want to play the best of the best.

I disagree with you on both points. First off, if you have never seen a major junior game, how do you know how hard they play game in and game out given they play such a rigorous schedule. Major junior is a more controlled game than college hockey, where players are going hard in college games for 60 minutes.

Second, just because they are young men does not mean that they don't get worn down. I am not implying that they are worn down, I am just saying that I have seen teams run out of gas on the second game of a two game weekend. I have also seen a team play harder and have more energy in the second game of a two game weekend. Go figure!

You could say the same thing about the ECHL, AHL, even the NHL. I realize they're older, but it's still the same idea.

I don't disagree with the sentiment that blaming fatigue is a cop-out, especially this early in the year. However (and I realize it's only October but the issue could have roots here) one thing that should be addressed later on in the season is the January (or February in the case of last year) meltdown, where we go on a long losing streak. Obviously I have my meltdowns during the summer on here so I'm one to talk :D, but what could be the cause of that? Injury? Long season schedule (highly doubt, because it's the same for everyone with the exception of the ivies)? Something else?

TEMPO Everyone....this is a marathon not a sprint....there is a lot of water yet to go over the dam....these games although important (in fact thats how we got in the dance last year) are preparing us for for league play...I think its safe to say we will not play a team in our league as good as ND or CC for that matter....I don't see any way that can be anything but positive in preparing for league play...the real test will be in 2 weeks when we head north,we have some time to heal up get ready to go...this trip is never an easy lift, but we've already been on the road and played better teams and should have an idea of where our compete level needs to be to give us a chance to win....thats a good thing ! ! !.....The season begins in 2 weeks a lofty goal for us should be a 1st round buy in the playoffs...thats not going to be easy but I believe after next weekend we will be prepared to take that on,because we prepared against the best so we can beat the rest...

Also-this team could have just folded against ND when down in the third 4-1. They showed some moxie and kept going and although they only got that one goqal they had a few chances. Merriam played well-that one from the left circle where he just flat out missed (seemed like he was expecting a pass) and then he got screened real well on another-those 2 were the killers. No excuses we were soundly outplayed-I just have not seen our defense allow forwards to set up so much. The area around the circles and between just seemed like ND territory. Next weekend will tell us if this was some aberration or that this group is having trouble adjusting to playing with each other. It's a long season-as Troyboy said-this is more a marathon than a sprint and we are severely undermanned right now up front. Not sure if we will be any healthier next weekend but it would help to get back a center or two.

As with any marathon, though, you must keep a pace. You can't expect to be able to just catch up at the very end out of nowhere (well, not entirely true, 10 games in March/April, but I've never been a supporter of the Union rule anyway), you need to stay close and never let the opponents run away from you.

Agree 100 %. They're young men, they can handle it.

They certainly can handle it physically, just hopefully they can also handle the results mentally.

I too hope that we see Diebold once next weekend.

I would certainly have Luke in there for at least one game just to keep the front of the net 'honest'. Not sure if it would have helped at ND but they were just skating through that area all night untouched.

I haven't seen nearly enough of Luke to be sure, but my gut feeling is that his mere presence would have kept ND honest on occasion, but it might have been balanced by the times that his size would have screened Merriam. What I haven't seen him enough to know is if the forwards would have been able to skate around him often. He hasn't gotten that much ice in the games that he has played (including Acadia) for a good evaluation.

Sensible-I figure his presence in front would just make it more difficult to get a shot to the net. It just seemed so obvious that ND had free room all night.

For the football fans. RPI defeated SLU today 14-7 to even the record overall at 3-3. The Liberty League records moves to 2-1 with the toughest part of the schedule coming up with games at Union and the game with nationally ranked Hobart.
