I wondered about that too. It probably depends upon exactly what kept him from being admitted to Harvard. Obviously, there is a range of grades/SAT scores that gets you into RPI but not Harvard, as happened with Helfrich who couldn't get into Brown. He would be a nice pickup.
No doubt, he would be a fantastic pickup.

Maybe Calof is the missing piece of the trade that sent *uxley to Harvard for a player to be named later. :D :D

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

Curious..... Any chance Seth makes an inquiry about Calof from Nepean, since it looks like he's not going to Harvard now?

I saw Calof play for Nepean last year ...he is very similar to JL in stature and offensive ability - but Calof is a faster skater -- and JL is no slouch. In short, the kid is a great fit for the ECAC. Also, I put him in the same group as JL, in that he had nothing left to prove in that league. (His line last year in 59 games was: 47-53-100) As far as hockey was concerned he should've gone to the BCHL or USHL. That said, if he was working on his test scores, I understand the need to stay at home.

He'd be a great pickup ...and the school would not be a hard sell to his folks. If memory serves, Papa Calof is a PhD - teaches at U of Ottawa Grad school.

Calof's line to date: 48 39-44-83

Now all we have to do is figure out whether we're interested !:p

Something's up here, though. Calof's grandfather is a Harvard alum. If you're a legacy AND a hockey player and you don't get into Harvard, there's probably something else at play.

He looks thinner and a bit taller than JL on the pictures that I have seen, but if you have seen him in real life ...

I hope that we are not interest, because that would mean JL is coming. The converse, as we have found out, doesn't follow. (SA does find ways to stockpile talent.)

Good point. Perhaps "grandson" doesn't qualify you as a legacy in Harvard.

Exactly. Assuming there's no fishy business going on behind the scenes, it could be like... "hey, Jacob, look how ridiculously stacked we are. You know you want a piece of this action."

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

The UML thread is all aflutter about Calof. They are quoting a USHR piece about interest in Calof including: "...Colorado College, Princeton, Yale, Vermont, Clarkson, and Mass-Lowell..."

RB -- he could always go to the BC or US league for a year and then come to us in 2011.:p He doesn't strike me as a kid who will do this however.

It was a year ago that I saw him.... He is a very thin kid...but he skates with a pretty compact style that makes him a bit tougher of a target :p He is a legit sniper with great skill. Someone will be getting a great prospect.

I thought that there was a big gap academically between Harvard and UML Of course, we already lost Wallin to them, so maybe that gap is exaggerated.

I have to think that UML is school #11 on a 10 school list. :D Do we think that P'ton and Yale admissions will go substantially easier on him than Harvard did? Being denied admissions at this late date smells to me like a test score issue? ..i.e. he's been working on raising his score?

I agree that if it is the SATs, he won't get into Princeton or Yale either.

If that's who's in on him, I'd say forget it at this late date and just hope he ends up at CC. :D

EDIT: That USHR article says it's not related to a behavior issue. The whole thing could just be Harvard's admissions department trying to show Donato who's boss, but it still perplexes me on a kid who's a legacy and I doubt Donato would be trying to sneak through a Shawn Weller level student.

You may be right about Harvard admissions, I don't have any intel that Teddy has/hD gotten sideways with them. IMO, Calof never would have made the list if he was a sketchy student...as they knew his grades. My bet is they were waiting on test results -- hoping to get him to whatever number H set the bar at.

According to the Harvard thread, Calof committed to Princeton.

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

Does anyone know if JL has taken any SAT/ACT tests to date? I have a source telling me everyone in Cornwall knows he's not going to RPI and that he hasn't even taken SAT. If thats the case are there anymore dates available to take tests B4 its too late?
If SA and staff are smart they should be all over Calouf. He's every bit the player JL is and I dont think he went to Mexico for Xmas or played summer hockey with major junior guys.
Is hockey recruiting anything like celebrity scandles, "Where theres smoke theres fire." Time will tell!

Reports are that Calof is headed to Princeton. And for the record, Calof has indeed practiced with an MJ team...IIRC it was the Ice Dogs.

The rumors about JL have been around forever...just as we heard that Pirri and D'Amigo were absolutely going to the O. This is not Appert & Monty's first rodeo. Do you think the guys who brought us the three Amigos would put as much effort as they have into JL without knowing his grades and SAT scores?

Help us all out by doing some research ..or better yet, take your act somewhere else.

Calof seems to have committed to Princeton as quickly as H****y committed to Harvard. :D Of course, this time the original school, not the player, broke the committal.

Sure smells hinky that Princeton jumps on him fast, after getting the door slammed in his face at Harvard.

Teddy may very well have some personal issues inside the admit office, and/or he's got AI issues with his youngsters...dunno.
