RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

We will be in Troy very early...the Hubster wants to buy his BRF shirt on campus and I would like him to see the Knotty Pine (we had a meal there during our official visit...do I remember the name correctly?), unless there is another local establishment that you prefer...we will keep you informed on our E.T.A.

How do we stack up guys? What will make the difference?

No, "the Knotty" is just fine by me...it sure ain't fancy, but the character is all there.:p

Count me in the long line of people who have yet to figure out Q'pac...they hang 5 on SLU last Friday, then lay an egg losing to Clarkson (4-1) the following night. Having met you and witnessed RPI dismantle Q down in Hamden, we know what they can do. I can only hope the weekend excitement has them come out with their hair on fire on Friday.

As for Princeton, injuries leading to inconsistency seems to define their year to date. Lost to Clarkson (4-3) and tied SLU (2-2) last weekend.

I better stop now before Ralph correctly berates me for cluttering up the recruit page....:-)

I'll be on the lookout for sure. I'll be spending part of my time at the game as an RPI TV news correspondent which will provide a great reason to interview potential recruits!

Be careful with that as I think it may be an NCAA violation. Please speak to the athletic department's enforcement officer before talking to any recruits.

Agreed - I'd don't have any idea what the recruiting regs are, but I'd very much prefer it if you stuck with stalker-ish headshot photos...:p

We usually seem to tie Q-Pac than anything else, so that's why I picked the kissing of the sisters. Plus, we seem to be going for the RC average. I hope we pick up the pace a little bit, though.

According to this several year old article (http://www.splc.org/report_detail.asp?id=910&edition=23) it is now permissible for campus newspapers to interview recruits, but I think anyone that intends to speak with recruits should still speak with the enforcement officer first. NCAA rules (both written and case law as cited in this article) change periodically and we don't want to take a chance of committing an inadvertent violation.

Since I don't know any way that the NCAA can regulate long distance stalkers (no direct communication) and message board chatter I think the "Baer-ish" approach should be OK.

The caveat to the RC Rule does state that if you get swept by your travel partner, you need to pick up an extra point or two. They haven't done that yet. But they're right on line - 2 points on the road, 3 at home. A sweep this weekend would be key.

If I recall correctly, that would be Kevin Beattie. Or it might be Colonel Knowlton. Either way, one should probably talk to Seth first, too.

At any rate... tread lightly for sure! I'd also limit it to guys we already know have committed.

Streaks have to start somewhere. RPI needs to make Friday night the beginning of our "run"...

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

I for one hope to see a few more kids from Cornwall -- namely Ming and the Spink Brothers...:D They play Friday night and then have six days off. A Saturday trip to Troy fits in there nicely.:p

BCHL teams are in the home stretch so those kids would likely miss weekend games to make a visit.

I would love to hear from the recruits - namely about what other schools they are considering. I do agree that caution is the operative consideration. I have to think that approaching Seth/Kevin/Colonel will/would only result in being persuaded not to seek out the kids.

Thanks for the warning. Perhaps I'll just stick to headshots!

I'd be surprised if Ming showed up again. To the best of my knowledge, RPI can only pay for one visit (per year?) by a potential recruit. I don't know if we paid for the last one.

It hadn't crossed my mind that the blather that goes on here could be problematic. We aren't speaking to the recruits or contacting them in any way.

I agree that any face-to-face contact should be cleared beforehand.

I thought about this and then decided I didn't care. It's nothing different than what goes on with fans of other teams speculating about potential recruits and tracking committed recruits (SCSU does the exact same thing on a dedicated board).

As far as identifying potential recruits that are visiting... I don't see that as a really big deal either.

Perhaps JL is due for another visit. I was a little surprised he wasnt with Ming and Leboeuf when they visited RPI a few weeks ago.

I agree that its not likely as he was here recently, but he'd only be coming from a car ride away, there are no major expenses like airfare. Assuming he'd crash with a player in a dorm, no hotel either. I'm sure they could find some pizza for him to eat somewhere. :D

Assuming Appert & Co. wait until after a kid visits and gets to know the team and the campus before making any offers... for a kid like Ming (as of yet uncommitted) the 2nd trip might be the offer visit.

That would please me beyond words. Not to mention Doc would have to break into his strategic reserves of choice vodka.:D

Given his deferral, it would be very good to see him check in with the RPI team. Spending some quality time with Brandon, Jerry and Chase would make me rest A LOT easier.
