RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

I would expect Foss, Kennedy, Bergin, Bailen, Leboeuf, and Koudys to be the top six, as always assuming that Brutlag is a forward. Beauregard is probably #8; we still need a #7.

I think Brutlag is our #7, though. He can fill a roster spot as both a forward and a 7th defenseman, since if it turns out that we need him on the blue line we won't have any trouble finding bodies (or hopefully, for that matter, scoring) up front. Since there's basically no chance we get a d-man at this point who is anywhere near our top 6, it just would not make any sense to me to lock up a scholarship for four years on a guy who might never even be in that top 6 (especially given that our two open top 6 slots are already filled for 2011).

Let's start this (without JL for the moment).

Code:
2011

Nick Quinn LD Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) 0- 0- 0- 0- 0
Luke Curadi LD Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) 0- 0- 0- 0- 0

I am somewhat in disagreement with this assessment, but am torn. In the late season this past year, Garrett Vassel was playing defense. But, why wouldn't Bryan have been moved back in that case? I think it's because he's very forward minded, the coaches saw this, and moved him up to forward. In an absolute emergency situation Bryan might move back, as I don't see Coach going into a game with 5 defensemen. But, if the bodies are available, Coach will keep Bryan at forward.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Nothing bad? You aren't trying hard enough. :D Until he shows up, there is always something that could happen. Perhaps Monty gets an NCAA HC job and takes Quinn with him.

However, most likely it will be good.

I am talking about the situation of having two Dmen playing together and coming in as a unit.
This is hockey, and a lot of bad things can happen before they get to Troy.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

We do need to start getting some forwards for 2011. With Ming out of the picture, I wonder whom we are after.
I think Yanik Laliberte would have to be a canidate for 2011 or maybe even 2012, if/when we can get JL to Troy of course. He doesnt have the flashy numbers like his brother but from what ive read he is a very tough player for his size.

Steven Beyers who was spotted at HFH last season could also be a possibility for 2011.

Bruce Statton?

FWIW, RPI targets D-Evan McEneny and G-Dalton Izyk were both selected in the OHL draft. McEneny went in round 2, #34 overall to Kitchener and Izyk went in the 11th round, #209 overall to Brampton.

We already had Vassel here, presumably using up a scholarship. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to have a guy who could be a true #7 on our roster; I'm just saying I don't like the idea of using a scholarship to do it when we have Brutlag who can drop back to the blue line and be just as effective as a guy like Vassel or anyone else that would would recruit at this point in the process.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

From the Directory:

Name: Patrick John Michael Koudys
Class: First-Year Student
Curriculum: Civil Engineering

That answers one question.

That surprises me as he is the youngest of all the recruits (although Quinn is also a '92). He'll still be 17 when he steps on the HFH ice. With Burgdoerfer, Brutlag and Foss it was easier to accept the growing pains of young defensemen because expectations were lower.

I would expect a "recruited walk-on" defenseman to join the roster but with Brutlag as the real 7th defenseman safety valve. With Seth's pre-disposition to use forwards at the point on the PP, including Brutlag if he's skating the rest of the game up front, it reduces the ice time burden a bit for the defense. Then again, I've never met a player that didn't want PP ice time so "burden" might not be the right word.

There were two forwards from Brunswick prep at HFH last season...don't recall names off the top of my head, but I'll look later. If memory serves one or both of those kids were on a few "lists" as it were. I'd have to guess that one or both of those kids will jump over to USHL at some point for some better competition.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

If Nolan is in fact AC don't be surprised to see a D-Man from Western Canuckistan as RB's #7 . I don't think Brutlag is going back to D (only on PP). Brutlag added toughness and grit and a willingness to crash the net up front. This was a big weakness for the cherry and white so I think SA will keep him up there.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Today is 3 May 2010. There are 158 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of next season.

I had the exact same thought, maybe Nolan will bring one of his Dmen from AV last season with him to Troy. Im hoping we will hear an announcement about the AC job once the coaches meetings are over this week in Florida.

I believe they were Kevin Duane and John Hayden. Duane is a '94 so he wouldnt be college ready until 2012 and Hayden who I read someplace is one of the top '95s in the country wouldnt be ready until 2013. Ming was the only other player that I was aware of as a possible canidate for 2011 before he decided to play in the O next season.

While Koudys is the youngest, he arguably had the best season of the 3. Quinn played an interrupted then abbreviated season. Curadi made great strides in the BCHL but is still relatively young in hockey years. I'll trust Seth's judgment in wanting both of them to get another year of seasoning and tutelage from Monty. That said, I'll be interested to see of another name appears. I know that Appert and Vines both made western trips following the end of our season, so I know they are not leaving any stone unturned.

Not that we're limited to them, but I'm not sure Alberni has much left as far as impact D players we could bring in for the fall. Heisenberg has this kid as uncommitted: Adam Hout-RD Alberni Valley (BCHL) 5'11 190 '89 58-5-10-15-79 --don't know a thing about his ability.

Penticton's Bo Dolan (D) '90 is a Minn. kid I've kind of followed for a while (5'11 175. RS: 39-9-16-25, Playoffs: 16-1-2-3.) His season was interrupted by a broken leg. Granted, after Monty stole Curadi away from the Vees, I'm not sure Harbison is doing any favors for Seth these days. :p

Thanks for digging them up RH... Now that the offseason is here, I think RB needs to start charting kids we have spotted at HFH, or are known to be recruiting... :p
