Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

I think the Phantoms average right around 4000, Devils should be near that, we are at 3000 from what you said earlier and Union is below that, but it's not their fault they have a tiny rink, I mean there isn't even enough room for 2 Zambonis. The Devils appear to have less because the TU can seat 8-9 thousand in the lower bowl.

Adirondack (3,193/game) and Albany (2,687/game) are the bottom two in attendance in the AHL. RPI is averaging 3,239 per game, including the 2,403 and 2,438 for the tournament. Those numbers should certainly go up in the second half of the season.

Union can hold about 2,500 fans, but never draw that, except for RPI and Cornell. they average closer to 1,800/game.

The TUC would gladly sell advertising to RPI Hockey, I can't imagine them giving any kid of break to a competitor.

don't discount all the new fans that were made during that wicked intermission show featuring the guy hitting the golf balls ...sorry, couldn't resist

you can now sponser the powerplay as some guy(law firm i think) as we heard during the tourney.

You're right on this. I started hearing promotions my junior and senior year for RPI hockey on 810 WGY. Perhaps if word is also put out during the ad time on the local news broadcasts (around the sports report), that would help as well. As I'm not in the Albany area, I don't know how the commercial format works, but if the sports report is broken up into two parts, stick the RPI hockey ad right in between, and I'm sure you'd get more to show up.

I hope that one thing our new marketing director is looking at is how Siena and UAlbany get the word out for their basketball teams. That should help with strategies.

Ads in the Times-Union, on a big station like WGY and on the broadcast TV stations is not a good use of the advertising budget. all those outlets cover a much wider area than from where RPI draws its fans.

Spots on Rodger Wyland's radio show, especially in the Thursday hockey segment, and on their website, would be be relatively inexpensive and would target the hockey audience. You would be preaching to the choir, however. Cable TV, especially the TW3 coverage of local sporting events, local avails on stations like ESPN, MSG, Versus, etc, would be less expensive than the T-U and broadcast TV and would target a much more desireable audience. Of course, you need a budget and they probably didn't have one for this year, since the new marketing person was hired after the budgets were set.

E. Stewart Jones is the name. It's nice that we can get sponsorships to help pay our bills, but the concern is how we advertise our product to get rears in the seats. Let's also consider that although we have a good townie fanbase (2500 for the tournament), let's get more students in the building. Section 33 was only packed during the Black Saturday game, the only time students get in for free. We should figure out a way to get them in the door.

Maybe that is part of the problem, do any other ECAC schools charge their students or are we the only ones. I know it would be a cost and maybe a bit of hassle but perhaps students should get in free with a student ID. Also the alumini "discount" compared to a townie is really not that much of a discount, if we inist on charging students $5 for day of game and general public $10 day of game the alumni should probably be paying $7 and somewhere around $6-7 per ticket for season tickets.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

There have been several threads on ticket prices. RPI's prices seem quite cheap compared to most.

One thing that I don't think is advertised but I did see when at the box office well before the renovations once is that you can use RAD to buy tickets; I wonder if that's still true. However, it should be looked into whether it's student apathy, they don't have a good way to get to the Field House, there's no convenient way to buy tickets, they don't have the money, they don't have laptop plug-ins (hey, it's RPI, it's worth a thought), whatever it may be. Maybe it's a project for the Student Senate: How do we get Sections 22, 33, and 44 packed?

Red Army bought out the entirety of Section 33 (and some of 15) with more than 80 tickets purchased, while LXA bought at least 3/4 of Section 22. I don't think selling tickets is the issue. Getting students to care and show up, win or lose, is the issue.

OK. Two out of my five look-in points are still valid (the laptop one was meant to be a joke, obviously). I think we can also add to this the ability for students to be a part of these groups and get into the games, along with any potential stimulation they are providing for the students. Obviously that's entirely up to the students and only something a small handful of posters (if any posters at all) can address.

While we're on the subject of stimulation, during last year's Greek Night game, didn't the winning frat become very silent about midway through the 3rd period when it was announced that they won the spirit contest?

The Red Army contingent this year seems to be made up of nearly entirely freshmen. When half of our "loud student section" consists of people who don't know the cheers, it's kinda hard to be loud. Yes, the back row of 33 is made up of a group of decently loud people, but it's not much of a saving grace.

Pikes wins the "spirit" contest because they're year-round contributors to the school community. Seriously, every brother puts in at least five hours a week in community service. That doesn't mean that they have school spirit or that they cheer at hockey games. It just means that their image puts a positive face on Greek life for the school.

I was under the impression it was a one-night deal. D'oh! *facepalms self*

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

The statement I made is most certainly applicable to RPI as well. In fact, it would be even less qualified. Nevertheless, the suggestion that Union's rink is limiting attendance in a meaningful way remains laughable (as would the same suggestion for RPI).

However, because Union and RPI's attendances alike are not limited by their arenas, it is fair to compare them in absolute values. Objectively, RPI still draws far better than Union (although RPI's attendance is nothing to write home about).
I couldn't access the stat, but I'm pretty sure that RPI's average attendance is in the upper quarter or so of D-1 programs. Union is laboring under the problem of having a D-3 building for a D-1 program. The recent renovations were almost entirely non fan related, and well you know about lipstick on a pig. I know with the state of the economy it's wishful thinking, but a new facility or major upgrade is on a lot of wish lists.

Careful what you wish for. Want to go to a UNH game at their facility? Try forking out $24 per seat. Or BU? Even more. Merrimack upgraded 1/2 of their seats and it costs $20 to sit in the reserved section now. You can either have cheap seats (which RPI certainly does) or a new arena. I doubt you can have both. Unless an alum out there comes along with a donation in the tens of millions.

Ouch, good point. That's a lot of money. I think I'd prefer to go back the the Frank Messa well one more time. ;)
