Meaningless polls are sayi- oh who cares, they're meaningless. :D

But for those who are curious, RPI is 16th, up 1 spot. We will be taking on #2 Yale and (#22 by virtue of points) Brown, as will Union, who is at half of their "rank". :p (aka Union is #13)

16th is probably about where we belong at this stage of the year with a 7-3-3 record. The poll may be meaningless but it has us picked about right.

USA Today has given us a rank. We're at 15.

Also, there was some possible disagreement about Union moving up whereas we stayed the same. Regarding the power rankings, yes we may have won, but given I think those are somewhat based upon goals scored, I'm a little surprised we didn't go down because, although we swept the weekend, we didn't "beat the spread" on either game. As for Union "moving up" in the Power Rankings, I think it is more of because Miami and Michigan moved down after their tough week.

Also "of note," we cracked into the USA Today poll at #15.

Edit - Dude beat me to it.

To add to the meaninglessness of the polls I would add that IMHO the ECAC teams are overrated if you consider how abysmally league teams have performed of late in the national tournament. Of course we know this year will be different. ;)

Everyone knows it's Eastern Bias when it comes to the polls. :D

You are always first to report what the polls say, and you're always quick to call them meaningless. Your words and actions are not on the same page.

I think that comes from the fact that I and others constantly berate the polls as meaningless, and love to rip into Beman and others when they fret over our placement. I think FD likes to watch them, but knows their true purpose as well. (That would be to use them as toilet paper, for those who were wondering...)

I'm a bit surprised we moved up. I thought Merrimack would jump over us after they beat BC and then lost at UNH by one despite grossly outshooting them. Then again I get the feeling that the media in HE have a hard time voting for anyone other than BC, BU, UNH and UMaine.

The next three games will tell us a lot about our team. If we can get a couple of points on the road and then beat BU at home then I think we are headed toward the top 10.

Did we move up, or did Minnesota move down? They split with Michigan and State, but State (the loss) wasn't in the rankings (although Michigan was above Minnesota, that was the win, but they had also moved down).

Burgie, you're absolutely correct in that these polls, when it comes down to the long and short of how the season progresses and who makes the tournament, doesn't mean much. However, one of my friends (whom also posts on here) believes the polls bring forth national attention and somehow translates to recruiting. I'm more inclined to believe that facilities and atmosphere bring the attention of the players, but you could probably make an argument that poll rankings helps somewhat with the atmosphere, as we've averaged over 3200 people per game, whereas with a mediocre-in-terms-of-winning-percentage team (like a couple years ago) we'd probably have less.

I don't recall this being posted, but there is a full-page article about Pat Koudys in the December 6 print issue of The Hockey News.

Ralph: I haven't received my 11/29 issue yet, how in the heck do you have the 12/6 issue? I would add that there was a small item in the first issue (11/22?) of THN's new glossy format...detailing the format changes inside. One of the changes will be that they'll no longer have updates on college leagues in each issue. The only college info will come in the form of player profiles...published whenever they decide we're worthy. They are providing me with even more reason to cancel my subscription.

I'm more inclined to believe that success, the coach's system, the coach himself, and atmosphere are heads and shoulders above poll rankings in generating interest from recruits.

Absolutely, I don't disagree with you whatsoever. The mainstream fan base, on the other hand...

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

Since FD was trying to make my point for me, let me expand on it a bit. I think that potential recruits definitely see the polls, and while for a kid that is either a recruit this yr or next it's not anywhere near as important a a coach or facilities it matters more for longer term recruiting. If RPI is consistently in the top 15 or 20 teams people begin to assume that we are going to be a top program year in and year out so that it makes it easier to attract coaches and assistant coaches to the program.

Yes it is more up to Appert than team rankings to sell RPI to potential recruits, but if the recruit has seen RPI consistently in the rankings then we are well known to them and to their parents.

Also, if we draw extra fans on away games it will make teams more likely to want to do a series with us since more fans at a game means more $$. Think of it this way, in 2 weeks BU comes to RPI which will bring in more fans than any games aside from Clarkson, Cornell, Union and Freakout.

So while the rankings may "not matter" they can definitely affect the things that do matter.

Ralph: What does the article say? Where is it suggesting he will be drafted?

Absolutely agree, very well stated.

BU will bring a boat load of fans to the game and in years past have outcheered the home fans. Lets hope the students and "casual" fans decide to show up and make some noise that night. If not it is going to be tough for the usuals from sections 17-19 to outcheer the BU fans. Just one mans opinion. Hopefully the marketing (or lack of it) department will buy some ad time on radio or tv and promote this game.

There is that detail about them outcheering the home fans, I think part of that is that the louder groups are spread out a bit. There are the people in 17-19, the phone call guy and his friends in 33 and a few loud people down in 44. In the end for the people in charge whether they are RPI or BU fans it doesn't matter it so long as they are paying customers.

I've often wondered about the lack of RPI hockey marketing, is there some policy about not marketing or does Knowlten consider that beneath him. It seems like an area with 2 AHL teams and 2 DI teams should be able to get some good cross-promotion going. The devils advertise at the Field House, perhaps they should help RPI advertise at the TU Center. Maybe something as simple as during a game before the devils go on the road, but RPI is home mention that there will be hockey in Troy for those interested the next weekend.
