I don't recall this being posted, but there is a full-page article about Pat Koudys in the December 6 print issue of The Hockey News.

Great to finally win our own tournament after such a long time of not winning it. However, a few things I noticed over the weekend that need to be worked on and will probably get hammered for saying but whatever. First, putting Bergin and Foss together is not a smart move. Maybe it is just me but Bergin looks a little bit off so far this season and I have never been a big fan of Foss, I understand you need leadership from your upperclassmen but why not pair them each with a freshman or Bailen? If JFK comes back before the USA game on the 19th why not sit one of them for the game? The powerplay is getting back to the old habit of not shooting and passing around and that will cost us come league play. Brutlag deserved the MVP and AAG should have at least been named to the all-tournament team I think. He had a huge game friday night.

In a totally non-game related note, did anyone else see the travel trailer that UAH rides in. Thing is a tractor trailer camper and according to the builders website can sleep up to 33 in it. I guess when the closest away games are 6 or more hours away you gotta travel in comfort.

Next weekend is a true test of how far along this team is and I am hoping for at least 3 points. Safe travels for whoever makes the journeys to New Haven and Providence next weekend.

Also, I really liked Rogic out there even though he got hardly any PT. QUOTE]

KN - What is it you liked? Other than his speed, I think Rogic really looks lost on the ice, just never makes a move or gets to open space to get a offensive look. Could be its just me and maybe he needs time to develop but thus far he has played 11 games with no points, although many games he gets little ice time. He reminds me a bit of Cullen (not a fan) - good speed but nothing ever happens and at times looks invisible.

A few things from my perspective - Rogic singlehandedly wiped about 20 seconds off the BG power play at the end of the third period with a tenacious forecheck in the BG zone. Had the team banging their sticks on the boards in thanks to the effort. He laid down the hammer on several players who were larger than him and took them out of plays. Several times I found myself saying "wow, Rogic did that?" While he may not be finding the scoresheet, he's centering the 4th line, so bringing that energy to the ice can be a big contribution in its own way. I think the scoring will come with time - clearly he has the speed but he's still a smallish freshman and needs some time to develop.

Until last night I was not a fan of Rogic and wondered what Appert saw in him. But he did step up last night and gave it his all when on the ice. I may have to change my opinion of him.

I totally agree about Foss and Bergin. I don't know why Foss received a defense player award. He certainly didn't earn it. One mistakes after another in my opinion in both games. He needs to step up his game. I don't think we loose much in him next year, unlike some other seniors. I hope JFK comes back soon. I also agree with you that AAG played really well. Brutlag was just outstanding. I love to watch him play; what a fighter he is. It's fun to watch his passion for the game.
Leave it up to RPI to make the last minute of play in the third period a nailbiter

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

Went to last nights game, and some of my thoughts are...
- I actually didnt think that the refs called that bad of a game. They were mostly out of the play and let the kids play.
- I though RPI play very well and that we controlled good parts of the game
- The breakout was much much better than in the past. Getting out of our end has been an issue, and didnt seem so much so last night.
- Both of the BGSU goals were kinda fluky. For the life of me, I have no idea how the first one got in. York had not shot on the 2nd as a deflection of a slapper off what looked like the shaft of a stick into the top of the net.
- WE NEED TO SCORE MORE. We have a ton of scoring talent, but 17 shots and 2 goals against BG last night with the way we played is just not enough. I said in a previous thread, if we score a minimum of 3 per game we will be a tournament team (ECAC and NCAA).
- Bailen played great and was happy to have him get a goal. I think he was surprised breaking out of his end that they gave him room to skate and he just balsted it by the goalie. Some big hits and great defensive play as well.
- Koudys and LeBoeuf....I'm big fans of the both and thought that they played great games.
- Brutlag. What else can you say....they kid hustled more than anyone else, always uses the body, and generally makes himself known on the ice. his hard work was rewarded with the OT goal. Great for him. He is quickly becoming my favorite.
- Rogic. I thought that the kid had a great game. He's a smallish freshmen, give him time. The kid has speed to burn and consistently used the body last night. He is clearly doing things he has never had to do before, and he's dong them so he can play. He's making the commitment, and its great to see. They had him on a penalty kill and he tied up the puck for a good 20 seconds against 3 BG guys and the entire RPI bench was standing and bangning the boards and yelling "Johnny". I was happy and proud of the kid - hes been benched this year, presumably for lack of effort and intensity, and to be put on the penalty kill and then have the team respond to his effort is more than admirable.
- AAG. Same as Brutlag...the kid hustles and plays much bigger than he is. No fear. Into the corners with everyone and uses the body multiple times every shift. It is great to see guys like him and Brut lead my example with the effort and intensity and commitment to compete.
york - the kid is great and in some ways i just find him funny. He had a save on some BG guy who skated by and gave him a little stick and he kinda tossed the puck over his shoulder at the guy like "get yourself and this junk outta here...". Love the attitude.

We laid some HUGE hits last night and I dont think that this BG team was a pushover by any means. They were quick and seemed to have very good team speed. this was a great win for the boys - with everything from the night before (CJ, and then coming back to win), and then getting tied with 9 sec left in the game, to win was big. This team is learing to win those close games and it looks like they have the expectation to win. They also seem to be extremely close and proud of the program and see the future as being bright. Its not lost on me how I feel and I just follow the team...imagine what it would be like now to be a member. The world is full of possibility. These kids are great kids, supportive of each other, and just fun to watch. I also think that this is an absolute reflection of our coaching staff. The world is good.

I'm gonna guess that Doc isn't a contributor to their new capital campaign...:D I'm ONLY KIDDING.

BTW, it was great seeing C.J. on the ice after the game. He had a huge smile on his face and seemed to be in very good spirits and went down the line congratulating his team.

Wicked-I have to tell you that in the past I have sent some contributions to AMC but they pale in the amount compared to what I have given to RPI. I never felt the closeness there that I did in Troy and RPI did give me a ton of scholarship money while AMC offerred bupkis (and I always believe in payback)

You won't get hammered by me-i agree-Bergin seems to be skating almost too casually. There does not seem to be real intent in his movements and he has lost some of his physical play. I hope he is physically OK but he has not been the same player that we saw earlier on. We have some hitters on this team-I like the way people seem to bounce when they hit Tinordi. The cardiac kids seem to find a way to keep these games interesting into the last seconds.

Making the teams move by crisp passing around the points is a really good thing in league play, especially if we can get early power plays. Wear down the defense enough so that we can take advantage in the end game. Obviously there should be SOME shooting, but if you can find that half-a-second, then by all means go for it. Otherwise, let's work the puck and get a good shot.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

I'm kind of confused as to the reference of Rogic being a "smallish freshman". It can't be his size, 6'...190lbs. We in Sect. 17 all watched & cheered with his outstanding effort in that PK. From the stands it appeared to be his best game this season. Oh, and the speed he showed when skating for the puck (in front of zamboni entrance) when it looked like the BG player had it all the way till out of nowhere...."here's Johnny". I for one would not be very comfortable if I was an opposing player going for a loose puck in the corner and out of the corner of my eye I see two numbers coming at me....24 & 28, YIKES! or as "Frank Barone" would say, "holy crap".

My bad - I didnt realize that he (Rogic) was that size. He is definately being mentored and is coachable and doing what it takes to play and contribute...and the team recognizes and appreciate the effort. It feeds on itself and everyone plays up. I am just enjoying watchng this team play so much because its fun and they work and care and are committed (to being the best they can and to the rest of the team). I also agree on the numbers you mention, but would also say that everyone seems to finish their checks. There is a standard of using the body that permeates throughout the team.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

I made a last minute decision to drive up for last night's game (had to see us finally win our own tourney again), arriving a few minutes into the first period. I thought the Engineers played a solid game for two periods but lost their offensive aggressiveness in the third period. Even the first period, when they only had three shots, I thought they put in a pretty good effort, but in the third they seemed to be laying back and it cost them. Thankfully, Messrs. Polacek and Brutlag (not sure how Cullen ended up with an assist) righted the ship.

I really enjoyed watching York in net. He's become a very quiet (physically, not verbally) goaltender. He's not Neil Little quiet, but he's getting there. Everything is done with a minimum of wasted movement. I particularly like the ease with which he consistently blockers high shots to the corner. I hope we can keep him for his final season as he has All-American potential, particularly behind a maturing defense.

The screw-up during the awards presentation was embarrassing. More importantly, how do you win two games on late goals and get 6 out of the seven tournament awards?

Agree 1000 % they played almost the entire third period including the whole power play that BG scored on.They are each in their own right a little shakey together they are an earthquake. It is a mystery to me why Koudys doesn't get more playing time he has skill and is very steady, Bailen did not play large chunks of the third period thats the real mystery ?Both really good players Bergin and Foss, but in my opinion Bergin has digressed a little and Foss has not improved very much since he came here and is very very inconsistant. This is just constructive critisism I love both guys but I fail to see why they get so much PT they have at least 2 or 3 bad give aways per game and IMO they are very weak around the net in the defensive zone.On to league play this is where the rubber meets road everything up to this point was prep for whats to come.....I think we have a legit shot at the top 4 thats my goal then its on to AC.......GO RED !!!!!!!

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

From the little of the crowd I could see on the telecast-the attendance was abyssmal. I know the tournament doesn't draw as much as other games but i really wonder why? Is there that much to do in Troy on a friday and saturday night that a double header of hockey for one price is not a great bargain? I know without the students there, not to expect that much but the place appeared 1/2 empty for the championship game. is the tournament still included in the season ticket package?

There is zero advertising for RPI games around the area, that may be why. Also the tournament is included in the season ticket package.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

The crowd was about what I expected with the students out of town - about 2,500. The problem wasn't the number of people in the stands but the lack of energy. Other than the guys in Section 17, it was a pretty lifeless group. Then again, with the students out of town I was probably at or below the median age (definitely was on the Troy side) - and I'm 49.

Oh boy, prepare to get hammered for that comment. Best of luck. :)

It's always interesting to observe the crowd at the Thanksgiving games. For example, behind us in the lower part of Section 17 was a group of teenage girls who were only there for the intermission figure skaters (and left the Field House with 1:30 left in regulation), and a middle-aged couple who made snide remarks about us every time we started a cheer.

Since the student season tix don't include the tourney, they resell those seats to people who frequently aren't regular attendees and often don't know much about hockey. So what is usually the center of the energy in the stands ends up being much the opposite for those games, making even 2,500 seem like less. And of course the band being absent doesn't do any favors for the crowd energy either.
