A few things from my perspective - Rogic singlehandedly wiped about 20 seconds off the BG power play at the end of the third period with a tenacious forecheck in the BG zone. Had the team banging their sticks on the boards in thanks to the effort. He laid down the hammer on several players who were larger than him and took them out of plays. Several times I found myself saying "wow, Rogic did that?" While he may not be finding the scoresheet, he's centering the 4th line, so bringing that energy to the ice can be a big contribution in its own way. I think the scoring will come with time - clearly he has the speed but he's still a smallish freshman and needs some time to develop.
Totally agree. I had the same reaction you had during the BG game. He had a lot of energy. I will also say that Bo Dolan had a very solid weekend. He is definitely benefitting from Bailen's (and Vines') tutelage.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

I made a last minute decision to drive up for last night's game (had to see us finally win our own tourney again), arriving a few minutes into the first period. I thought the Engineers played a solid game for two periods but lost their offensive aggressiveness in the third period. Even the first period, when they only had three shots, I thought they put in a pretty good effort, but in the third they seemed to be laying back and it cost them. Thankfully, Messrs. Polacek and Brutlag (not sure how Cullen ended up with an assist) righted the ship.

I really enjoyed watching York in net. He's become a very quiet (physically, not verbally) goaltender. He's not Neil Little quiet, but he's getting there. Everything is done with a minimum of wasted movement. I particularly like the ease with which he consistently blockers high shots to the corner. I hope we can keep him for his final season as he has All-American potential, particularly behind a maturing defense.

The screw-up during the awards presentation was embarrassing. More importantly, how do you win two games on late goals and get 6 out of the seven tournament awards?

Agree completely re: York. He is a cool cat back there, but it should be noted he talks very well with his team and he does not take any B.S. from opponents.

The HFH effort for the tourney was sad. They only had one side of the front doors operating and the new ticket scanners weren't scanning...so the line got ridiculously long for not a big crowd. The post-game ceremony was amateur hour, with BG being made to wait around at center ice for no good reason. I believe it was Ed Weaver who had to hustle the All-Tourney list down to the PA booth...as the entire building waited. I wonder if they've put him on the payroll? Al Shibley was apparently unable to communicate to us the reason for the delay. Where the #***** was Kevin Beattie?

I understand they were missing their student slave labor, but if you're gonna run a tourney, it'd be nice for it to appear as if you've done this sort of thing before.

From the little of the crowd I could see on the telecast-the attendance was abyssmal. I know the tournament doesn't draw as much as other games but i really wonder why? Is there that much to do in Troy on a friday and saturday night that a double header of hockey for one price is not a great bargain? I know without the students there, not to expect that much but the place appeared 1/2 empty for the championship game. is the tournament still included in the season ticket package?
Zero promotion by RPI, and the Devils were home at the TUC which might've taken a few bodies away from Troy. That said, it is a holiday and lots of people (aside from students) are traveling -- there were a fair amount of locals in my section who weren't around -- especially on Friday. I've said it before and I'll say it again, why every local pee-wee hockey team isn't given 20 tix to the tourney is beyond me. God forbid they put some fannies in the seats, sell some popcorn and ATTEMPT to build a young fan base.

They're hoping to do so. It hasn't been confirmed. But, the coaches and the ODRP people both want a tournament instead of a one-day showcase. All that's left to do is work out the logistics.
I thought I had heard/read someplace after the Halloween games back in October that Placid wanted to try and get Vermont involved in the tournament while rotating NC and CD teams and having one other invited team. With the trouble RPI has been having bringing in quality opponents and getting fans in the seats for their own tournament then maybe the time has come to get rid of it. :( Maybe replace it with a Thanksgiving holiday tournament in LP?

Edit: I might have heard the first part of my post mentioned on 980am during one of Kens shows.

It was indeed discussed by Leaman on 980. He mentioned the desire to expand it into a true tourney. I have a buddy who is closely involved with LP events and he mentioned these items are on the table, along with possibly moving the event into December (incorporating skiing/skiers into the event) as well as hoping to add UVM for the draw.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

The thing I love best about York is his demeanor. He never lets opponents pull anything cute in his zone. When he gets scored on, he doesn't tuck tail, drop his head and hide in the net. Instead, he just gets angry. This is HIS house - how dare you score.

Case in point - the goal Bowling Green scored with 9.4 seconds left in regulation on Saturday. Unlike Kinkaid, who dropped to the ice in defeat when we 'scored' the tying goal with 7 seconds left at Union, Allen just got MAD. Slapped his stick on the ice, started yelling, flung the puck the hell out his net. Rather than psych himself out, like many other goalies tend to, he instead amps himself up to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Just took a look at collegehockeystats.net and Nick Bailen is ranked 3rd nationally amongst defensemen for PPG. We're also 40th in the nation for PIM, so we've been doing a good job staying out of the box. Good thing too, because since Niagara, our penalty kill has just gone south.

I guess Brutlag and I think alike. It has taken me all weekend to get over the fact that he could not clear the puck at the end of regulation. I was glad that he had the chance to redeem himself with the game winning goal.
The team is resilient as has been said, but they need to take care of business before they need to come back.
I like the wins, but they are going to give me a heart attack on their way to victory.

The same thing happened with Paul Kerins last year, although shift the timing back a couple minutes. Maybe he's a little harder on himself because he's a captain and feels the need to lead by example. Come to think of it, maybe it's a good thing it happened that way, because he can say to his teammates, "OK, so you made a mistake. Put it behind you, and rebound by making a big play."

Close games are nice because we don't have to worry too much about Commandment X, and seeing as how RPI/PWR have no bearing on the absolute magnitude of difference in goals scored (only +, -, or 0), a 3-2 close win is exactly the same as a 8-0 win. There may be a little bearing on the meaningless polls, but so be it, this isn't college football.

I have watched the end of the games again on RPI-TV (great job). Even when i know the result, it still makes me nervous. I can feel the tension every game. Please let them win a few easily so I can avoid needing a valium.

The crowd was about what I expected with the students out of town - about 2,500. The problem wasn't the number of people in the stands but the lack of energy. Other than the guys in Section 17, it was a pretty lifeless group. Then again, with the students out of town I was probably at or below the median age (definitely was on the Troy side) - and I'm 49.

This problem is not unique to Troy. Here in Denver, when the students are gone on break, our building is basically lifeless. Without the students, our crowd is mostly older people, and young families. neither of which are cheering types. They are just there for a relatively cheap night out.

I'm not sure how many places don't have this issue. Even at Lynah during the playoff series two years ago, I saw empty seats, nearly an empty section for games 2 and 3.

RPI looks solid. They rocked, I enjoyed watching the games. Lotsa talent out there.:D

I have watched the end of the games agin on RPI-TV (great job).

I watched several games this weekend - very good job presenting & calling the games, especially on games where they had no rooting interest. Obviously understood the game, did enough homeowrk to know pronunciations, etc. Made for enjoyable viewing (even if game outcome was what desired).
