Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

BTW- Where is Red Cloud ??? I have not been as active on the board lately but I have not seen our trusted and gifted colleague post. This summer we lost Jerry and Brandon and I for one hope that we don’t lose Red Cloud. Is he dating Lindsay Lohan? Is he in a remote undisclosed location w/ Dick Cheney? If you see this Red Cloud, deign to think about coming back to this thread. Who else is going to lay an a** whooping on Beman or Hokydad?

Clearly he is Without A Peer here on this board so he took his talents to South Beach with Lebron and Chris Bosh. :)

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

amonia "snappers"...if the camera scans the bench before an NHL game, you'll see the players passing them amongst each other

Yes --ammonia carbonate inhalants that you snap to release...perfectly legal... and harmless. Prevalent on NFL sidelines as well. From wikipedia: "...Smelling salts release ammonia (NH3) gas, which irritates the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs,[2] and thereby triggers an inhalation reflex[9] (that is, it causes the muscles that control breathing to work faster[9])...."

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

...Why did the fieldhouse get quiet in the third? I understand our quality of play dropped, but that's no reason for the fans to stop cheering.

I thought the air got sucked out of the building after Bailen went nuclear on that kid (a BIG time, clean hit BTW). RPI stopped hitting and skating and the fans stopped cheering...dunno why.

RPI will need to regroup and bring everything they've got Sat. Union is legit and will give us all we can handle on the big ice. Also, FYI - they're averaging over 5 pts. per game.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Higgs for ROTW or bust.

As for the air getting sucked out of the building, let's just say refs and leave it at that. Plus, what was REALLY surprising, people were leaving at the end of regulation!

Wicked-They are indeed perfectly legal. Harmless? There are some doubts. There are some medical people who feel they can be addictive and that some frequent users develop a rebound phenomenon, in that when they wear off there is a reversal of the effects to a less than normal state. There are also some Otolaryngologists who feel with repeated use they can desensitize the mucosa and leave one with an altered ability to smell and taste. Personally, and I have had plenty experience with them, I think they are perfectly safe when used as I hope the boys do-just for game purposes. As an aside-anyone remember when Butyl Nitrate (Poppers) were thought to be implicated as the etiologic agent in AIDs(which was called GRID in those early days)?

wasn't it Amyl Nitrate...known as Poppers? Just remember what "friends" called it

For those who are interested in (re)watching the Time Warner coverage of last night's game, it is currently being replayed on Time Warner Channel 3 in the Capital District.

Nope-amyl nitrate was a commonly used inhalant but it was the butyl nitrate form that got the reputation because it was frequently used in the bath houses in San Francisco and New York. Poppers is a generic term that included all the different nitrates used including amyl nitrate. But Butyl Nitrate was the one favored for use as it led to a significantly stronger and longer effect.

Ed Weaver's weekend review http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/2010/10/24/sports/doc4cc507364c3cb630450676.txt with comments on special teams, Cullen sitting out, ...

Just a couple of comments. Helfrich has made a great comeback (so far), so Cullen has to back track. Why can't we get all of our talent on the same page? Getting a win on Saturday of parents weekend has been difficult in the past, so even though we just eked it out, I will take it.
As for Saturday night, Union will be tough, but I like the intensity that we have played with (eveidently not against Niagra) so far, and I believe that if we bring that against Union we will win.
Are we to believe that Brock Higgs is for real? I hope so, getting a scorer on the second line will do a lot for the top guys.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I'm willing to say Brock Higgs is for real. Putting him with Marty O'Grady is probably one of the best things.

I'm still a little worried about the AAG/Malchuk/Brutlag line. They're going to need to get going here, and quasi-quickly. We really should have 3 solid scoring lines.

Also, on the power play, we're back to 3 forwards and 2 defensemen. I wonder if Coach Graham seems to think the 4+1 just isn't working...

I'm still trying to figure out why peeps doubted or are surprised by Higgs. He's only continuing to do what he did in Jrs. -- that being scoring big goals in big situations...doing the hard work and getting dirty in front of the net.

If and when Cullen proves to Appert that he's got his head out of his ***, he'll get ice time. Until then, he sits...just as Helfrich did last year. I'm fine with that. Seeing guys like Brutlag, Halpern and Malchuk going full rip on every shift ought to be enough motivation for Paddy to get it in gear.

Appert intended for there to be competition for every spot in the lineup and he's got it. Guys who step up will play. As it should be.

I'm not sure if you saw (or how you missed) Malchuk nearly getting his head torn off in the Niagara crease trying to bury a rebound?? Some things don't show up on score sheets but are essential for wins. Also, Joel's relentless work on the PK should be all you need to know about why he's out there. That line has brought a ton of energy and created several good chances..rest assured they're gonna get their points.

That must have been during the 2nd period (on the other side of the ice), I think I missed that. I'm not doubting that the players work very hard. I mean, look at what Brutlag has been doing in front. Angers-Goulet has also been pouring it on.

I have never doubted Malchuk being a great player, he deserves all credit where credit is due, and have praised him from the start of the season. My jury is out on the three of them being on the same line, not whether or not they should have play time, because the answer to that one is an emphatic yes.

I saw it on the video which I was actually watching at that moment instead of posting something on USCHO.
