Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

... It has to be our coach's job to find a way to shift some of that attention. Hopefuly we will get just enough offense from the frosh to do just that.

I agree and think Rogic might just be the guy that has folks talking by mid-season. I am hoping that Cullen and Helfrich can regain form. They have all the skills and tools. The future is now for them -- its time to produce.

Yup-although it does not look like we have one outstanding freshman-I like the overall depth and talent that has been added to the line up. This will be a year where coaching will be even more important in getting the most out of the younger guys.

Disagree. I think Rogic will be an all-rookie kid by the end of the year. I don't know who was or was after him on the recruiting trail, but he's got great size and A LOT of speed. He is the fastest big forward we've had in maybe forever...the kid can flat out burn. As Chase mentioned, he's got a strong drive to get the puck to the net. The kid is gonna be handful for opposing defenses. I have no idea what Seth will do with the lines, but having a kid with that kind of speed will attract a lot of attention and will surely open up the ice for his linemates. That is, unless he beats everyone to the net. :D

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Does anyone know if it appears that way in the print addition?

It's also interesting that Guy Lebeouf's favorite book is entitled "Bare New World." It's probably a misprint of "Brave New World," but it could be a porno novel.

And then there's this gem from the Atlantic City article:

Obviously, Union and RPI are the teams most affected by the move.

Because obviously, Union and RPI are the teams that are the furthest away from the new venue for the ECAC tournament

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I have a quick question for the RPI fans - how mobile are your defensemen? While looking at the roster I noticed that you have a few guys (Bailen and Brutlag in particular) that are on the small side, which often correlates with agility. I also noticed that while Brutlag is listed as a senior defenseman on the roster, someone below projected that he will line up at wing this weekend as he did during the exhibition game. I assume that the USCHO roster is incorrect in listing Brutlag as a defenseman, or that he played defense in the past but has moved up for this season. Is that correct?

The reason for my question is that it seems that many teams - HEA and ECAC teams in particular - have had good success against CC at home when they have smaller, mobile defensemen. On the other hand, larger less mobile defensemen have often struggled on the Olympic ice sheet. Of course the ideal is a large, mobile defenseman, but they typically move on to the NHL pretty quickly if they have that combination.

I'm looking forward to 2 good games!

Brutlag was moved from D to forward early last season. The experiment was a success, and he has stayed there besides for time at the point on some power plays.

Your guess is as good as ours. We don't get to play on an Olympic size rink all that often. It will be interesting to see how our D-men can adapt. If it's any help-I have been followoing RPI hockey for about as long as anyone and IMO we look like we may be on a rapidly improving trend. We have a lot of fellows who will be fighting for ice time and will be out to prove they belong out there. Hoping for 2 really exciting games.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Bailen is small, quick, and has experience. So, I could see him producing some points.

Brutlag did move up to forward. The College Hockey Stats roster has him listed correctly.

And, Doc is correct that the Engineers don't have much experience on the Olympic ice. Last year, at the Alaska tournament (also on Olympic ice), they struggled against UAA (first game), but pulled out a tie against UA_. So, really, who knows.

The most recent podcast of Without a Peer, an excellent fan-run blog that covers both the Men's and Women's team, brought Appert onto the air and Seth said that he / the team was looking forward to a chance to play on the large ice, and he said that the team had enough speed / mobility to the point where he didn't expect difficulties stemming from it.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I would think the forwards can adapt to the larger ice surface more easily. The defensemen have to be concerned about those deep corners and all that space coming out from them to the nets. I've always felt the change in ice surface is more difficult for the defense. Goalies, I am sure are affected considerably also as the angles are all somewhat different to play. I know when our boys were getting up to Lake Placid year after year they seemed to perform better each year with more exposure and practice to the big sheet of the '80 rink.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

It just dawned on me that RPI is playing all five of the other D-III schools that play D-I hockey this year (Clarkson, SLU, Union, CC, and RIT). We have never played all five before. I wonder if anyone else has.

My guess would be if another one did, it'd probably be an ECAC team. ;)
