Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Here's what I would throw out as a guess for lines on Friday:

Polacek - Lee - Helfrich
AAG - Malchuk - Brutlag
Rogic - Halpern - Cullen
Rabbani - Burgdoerfer - O'Grady

Bailen - Kennedy
Bergin - Koudys
Foss - LeBoeuf

York
O'Grady needs to be in Lee's or Halpern's place. The rest looks OK.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

SA on WAP podcast said neither Tinordi or Smith are hurt...was just a # game & wanted to get Beuregard in the game...gotta go Slap Shot on versus

I don't understand how it would be a numbers game. Some NCAA schools in the past, when playing exhibition games vs Canadian Universities, dress more than the 21 players allowed by NCAA rules, because the game doesn't count on the schedule or as an NCAA game. For example, in BU's game vs Toronto on Saturday night, BU dressed 8 d-men. Just curious why SA didn't do the same?

Not enough room on the bench maybe?

The Engineers did dress more than 21; they dressed 24. However, there are still physical limits, such as bench space, to consider. You can't just put 50 guys on the bench. SA decided that he only wanted to dress 24.

Thanks mucho to WAP for getting info like this.

I still don't think it bodes well for Tinordi's early playing time. I do think he is positioned ahead of Beauregard on the depth chart. (I suspect that SA does not foresee Beauregard moving up on the depth chart and wanted to reward him with an opportunity to play in this exhibition game.) However, I also think that it means that he has not shown as well as a Burgdoerfer, Higgs, and Rabbani, guys who would be playing a similar role to him. Given that at least one of THOSE guys will probably not be traveling, let alone dressing, this weekend, it would mean that Tinordi has a lot of work to do to find himself in the lineup. I, like DrD, remain hopeful that he will continue to work hard and offer us something that we haven't seen out of a winger in quite some time.

Perhaps this is wishful thinking, but I would like to make myself believe that Tinordi's FLOOR is to be a player like Andrew Lord.

Wouldn't take any effort to sell me on that idea. However, I'm posting my "will happen" guess, not my "should happen" guess. I would also put Smith or Tinordi in there for Rabbani if I had my way.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

The exhibition game was likely one of the few (if only) times Kevin Beauregard gets into a game this season. With no one leaving the team in December to play in the WJCs, those spots in the lineup won't open up giving him a chance to jump into a game.

His role, as always, is the "message sender." If guys are dogging it in practice, he'll take their spot and go out there and work his tail off on the ice. He might not be overly talented, but he'll at least play hard.

I hear you but I just don't see where you are getting the "will" from. O'G is too good of a player to stick out there with two grinders (IMO). He might be our 2nd best forward at this point. I think most coaches try to find two players that can play together well and then look for a compliment to fill out a line. O'Grady isn't the kid you would use to fill out a line - and I don't see either R or B as the right pairing for him.

That's JMO though. That and $2 will get you a vulcanized rubber disc.

Absolutely agree with these thoughts. I think we will see a much greater contribution from Tinordi if given the chance. In any case I suspect this team needs his size and some grit out there. It is a long season (and I hope very long and goes through March this time) and we will need every able body we can keep in the line up.:)

That makes considerable sense. But what about trying to spread the ability to score a little bit to each line? Having a fourth line with a scorer on it could achieve that. It would sure be nice if we had several lines with an offensive threat on them-so that the opponents could not concentrate all their defensive efforts on the one line with Polacek on it. Just my 2¢

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

ECAC couldn't give up weekend at beach: So nice, they wrote it twice.

Does anyone know if it appears that way in the print addition?

It's also interesting that Guy Lebeouf's favorite book is entitled "Bare New World." It's probably a misprint of "Brave New World," but it could be a porno novel.

I don't think that we have enough offensive talent for four lines that can score. I'd be most happy if we could have three and a shut-down checking line.

SA said it must be scoring by committee and I believe he is right. That said, I think they will be lucky to have two lines that offer a legitimate offensive threat.

As for the line-up suggestions being thrown around; it is still early and SA will probably expereiment for several games trying to find a couple of good combinations. If Rojic, Higgs and Tinordi don't contribute offensively this season, the Engineers will probably struggle. Guys like Rabani, Lee, Smith and Beau are nice fill-in 4th line guys, but they don't give you much more than effort.

Polacek, Helfrich and Cullen are the keys, in my opinion. They MUST have good years. The defense and goaltending should be solid, despite the problems Tuesday night, but you can't expect to win 2-1 every night.

Hockey is no longer a sport where an individual can dominate. If you have 4 gifted forwards, you will score more goals with two each on two lines than putting each on a different one. If you look back at last year, that is essentially what we did. Chase and Jerry. Brandon and Kerins - with O'G chipping in as the unknown freshman compliment. AAG & Cullen were the 3rd line (though lesser). The 4th was an energy line.

This is essentially how the NHL works too. Two scoring lines, one hitting line and one versatile line that is typically quite good at checking and able to toss in a goal or two here and there.

So my guess is that the SA will look at our boys in a similar way this year. 1st line is built around Chase. 2nd around/with OG. Put the right guy with each of them - likely choosing from Brut, Cullen, Rogic & Helfrich and then choose the compliment. Build a 3rd line around AAG again. 4th line just tries to hit, skate and grind.

A huge unknown for us this year is what our forwards can do - aside from CP and MO. We just don't know what we have yet in Rogic, Higgs and the frosh and we simply don't know what to expect from Helfrich, Cullen and some of the other returnees.

Well said. Lot's of questions to be answered in the next 4-5 weeks.

Totally agree. Marty has a motor and gives you all out effort at forward every night, every shift. Seth mentions Marty with Chase on the top PP line. Mentions Rogic and Higgs as having a chance to play center as freshmen. "...York needs to take the next step forward."

Agree with all of that. Just thinking about ways to try to spread out the opponents keying on Chase this year. He is obviously the marked man and anything we can put on the ice to alter the opponents being able to shadow him with their best dfefensive players would be appreciated. I remember 99-00 when Tapper was just on fire. At least then we had some other offense to take some of the opponent's defensive heat off him. Even if Murley only scored 9 and Cavosie 12 that year-they were a threat as were McPherson and Gardiner. Chase is in a similar situation-most teams will feel if they shut him down, they shut us down. It has to be our coach's job to find a way to shift some of that attention. Hopefuly we will get just enough offense from the frosh to do just that.
