Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Glad to see the beginning of the season. And the weather around Troy feels crisp in a November kind of way. It's time for ice!

I was in Troy about 2 wks ago, so I stopped at HFH and looked around... I saw substancial completion of the new Shirley Pavillion ;) located where the West Grandstand formerly stood. Just metal framing at that time, as I seem to recall... :)

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

We've finished our summer "Know Your Enemy" series. I hope it was informative and interesting to our readers.

This week's podcast will take place at its regular time - 8pm Eastern. Our guests will be Seth Appert, men's head coach, and Joe Paisley, writer for the Colorado Springs Gazette. The trip to Colorado will be the primary topic, but we'll also recap the New Brunswick game and touch on the women's trip to Wisconsin and their upcoming series with Vermont. Feel free to call in with questions for Seth or Joe.

As always, our podcast home is at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/withoutapeer

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Are any of you RPI fans coming out for the games this weekend?

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

UNB 4 RPI 1 AspyDad's three stars of the game, Bergin, Polacek, Bailen. I know you can't tell alot from an exhibition game but the defense is a thousand percent better than last year. Lebeff is a stud. He gets a considerable amount of ice time including PP. I am worried about Allen, he did not look sharp at all. Merriman was excellent. We struggled again in the second period which was a problem last year.

Just got back from the game, I think at this point in the season UNB could beat any team in the league and probably most of the HE schools. I can`t recall a better Canadian college team coming to TRoy in many many years.Smooth skating and very poised with the puck. I`m not sure they were even going all out. Only weakness I saw was they couldn`t hit the net from the blue line to save their life. Shot way high all night. Very good club.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Allen's play was uninspiring. At one point he fanned on a shot with his glove and actually looked in the glove. He is reaching for pucks that are not on net, his play was not technically sound. I'm rooting for him but if this continues Bryce will have to play a significant amount of time this year. Bryce looked good.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I think Bailen had 4 or 5 shots on net. He has a knack for getting the puck thru traffic.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

UNB came as advertised. They're fast and they pursue the puck hard. They were also clearly in better game shape than we were.

The fan enthusiasm was not there at all. I tried as hard as I could to start cheers and get people excited, but it was difficult with such a sparse crowd.

Defensive mistakes / flubbed passes ruled the day. All four of UNB's goals were a beautiful opportunity gift-wrapped to them by a lapse. There's a reason why all four goals were unassisted. There wasn't a whole lot that York could do on the three against him. Granted, he'll usually save one or maybe two of those (and he did on some other flubbed passes), but if you gift-wrap too many opportunities, the opponent (especially one so good) is going to capitalize.

I'm looking forward to a good series in Colorado Springs. I'm expecting at least a split, hopefully the boys can pull out three points or a sweep.

The new icing rules are horrible...thank goodness they are only being used in exhibition games. At points it seemed like the refs were not even sure to call it or not.

Agree wholeheartedly with this post. Hope your right about the split next weekend. I am not feeling overly confident about the Colorado trip.

They should be. I think their average age was 30 :D

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

One other question... is it possible to "rewind" the chat on WaP? I'd like to be able to re-read the conversation / see the reaction of everyone else while the game is ongoing, but I'm not going to skip out on the game to do it. Anyone with any knowhow? Much appreciated.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I spent a fair amount of time actually watching the game tonight (as opposed to doing TV) and had some comments on individual players.

I was very impressed by Greg Burgdoerfer. He seemed to be making a lot of plays and took some great shots. CJ Lee also had greatly improved presence; I think he'll shortly be a major playmaker. Malchuk also played very well; seemed like he was everywhere at once. Beauregard is huge; I'm looking forward to more contributions from him. Bailen is a star among our defensemen. He seemed situationally aware on both defense and offense by making key plays and taking quality shots. A PP line with Bergin and Bailen would be exciting.

Polacek seemed invisible. He wasn't a major presence on the ice, and he certainly didn't feel like the center of the team as he was last year. Lebouef and Koudys seem a bit on the slow side, and some of the mistakes they made directly translated into goals for UNB. York was nervous and tentative in goal, Merriam by contrast looked great.

AAG, Halpern, Helfrich, Brutlag, Kennedy, Foss, Merriam all seemed to be doing their regular thing. Didn't see much of note from Cullen, Rabbani, Dolan, or Higgs.

Game will be up on RPI TV midday-ish Wednesday.
