Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I like Jerry's attitude, but he has to realize that playing this weekend could cause him to miss a lot more than a spot on a national team.
He should sit down with Helfrich and ask him what happens if you return too soon.
I like the way Appert handles these situations. The player needs to heal before he can help anyone.
I hope D'Amigo is healthy enought to play and gets his wish, but if it is not to be, he should thank the coaches for looking out for his long term health.

EHF, With regards to the way SA handles injuries I thought he screwed up big time with the whole York situation this past weekend.IMO there is no way York could have been so hurt that he couldn`t even warm up friday and then be A ok for saturday. If i were Bryce Merriam I would be a little ticked about that. I had these thoughts as soon as I heard that york was starting BEFORE the game.

I see your point but at the same time would be surprised if Bryce wasn't 100% aware of the situation. Goalies are like peas in a pod usually.

I don't agree with the premise that Appert handles injuries especially well. I think his estimates on returns are often way too optimistic and clearly he brought back Helfrich last year before he was capable of contributing much.

Total agreement here. I usually have nothing but good to say about SA but his optimism about injuries gets me quite confused. Knees, ankles and concussions take a lot more time than he has mentioned-it gives rise to the thought that the injuries are far more serious than he first indicated. Sometimes it is better to say nothing until you know for sure about the time frame for recovery.

Guys, that's the PR part of the job of being head coach. If he came out doom and gloom all the time everyone would go insane. The fans are on a need-to-know basis. When we need to know, we'll find out.

Incidentally, the Team USA WJC camp roster (comes out as a Word doc) was announced and Jerry D'Amigo is there. The final roster is named on December 23rd.

I agree Seth has on occasion been too forthcoming with injury timetables.

I don't think it is all fair to blame him for rushing Helfrich back. These decisions aren't made in a vacuum with Seth staring at himself in the mirror alone in the men's room, then storming into the locker room demanding that Tyler suit up. The Orthpaedist, Chris Thompson and the player all render their opinions as to how an injury is progressing, and whether a player is ready to return to action. In truth, after the injury has healed, all the staff has to go on is what a player is telling them about how they feel. It's no secret that a player who is eager to action will fib about his condition. I heard Hines Ward admit as much about his concussions the other night on NBC.

A player may be clinically ready to return, i.e. having met all benchmarks for strength, flexibility, stability, etc. But often times a player doesn't seem to return to "his old self" for all long time following his return. Confidence or lack of it - in the injured joint - also plays a role in how a player performs immediately upon returning.

Of course, we now know that JD'A is even more optimistic than SA as to return dates. :D

No comment on tweeting. Remember that I still don't have a cell phone.

Seth usually has little to do with when a player returns. Generally, that decision is left up to the individual player, regarding how he feels, and the team's athletic trainer Chris Thompson. Most player injuries are never specific to protect the player, so that upon returning, that specific injury is not a target for opponents.

Yeah so... Jerry D'Amigo didn't just skate today... He full-blown practiced.

Jerry D’Amigo practiced on Wednesday. Not just skated, practiced.

Whether or not Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s standout freshman plays this weekend, remains to be seen.

“There’s a chance,” said RPI head coach Seth Appert. “Better today (Wednesday) than there was yesterday (Tuesday).”

D’Amigo suffered a knee injury early in Saturday night’s 5-4 overtime loss to Union in the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament championship game and although it was determined before game’s end that the injury was long-term serious, chances of D’Amigo playing just six days later seemed less than remote.

“It felt good out there, it was just like normal,” D’Amigo told reporters after leaving the ice. “Nothing to be worried about, I hope.

“I want to get back and help the team win,” D’Amigo said.

Big. Brass. Balls.

I'm pretty sure I covered all of this in my post when I mentioned: " Orthopaedist"...."Chris Thompson" ...and " how a player feels"... ?

You are not alone-Jen and I have cell phones but do not know how to use them and have made only one call on them in the past 2 years. There are just some old habits that we find hard to break. I am surprised that I figured out how to do the few things I do on a computer. I am so one dimensional-all I know is medical related.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

OK - we can all exhale. This is proof positive that it is/was indeed a minor injury. There's no way he'd be even close to being in his skates if anything on the MRI was remotely suspicious.
But it still needs some time to heal. Of course, being 18 years old, he heals a lot faster than I would. :D
