Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I'm not sure anyone posted it here ( apologies if you did) but here is what The Record said about D'Amigo: "...The injury isn’t “real serious” in the words of RPI coach Seth Appert but D’Amigo, a Binghamton native, almost certainly be sidelined for an extended period for the next four games against Cornell, Colgate, Union and Boston University...."

The so-noted stupid penalties brought back all too recent memories. Spotting any team 3 goals is a recipe for a long season. I saw the same thing last night as I did at Niagara: A bigger, stronger team out skating, out-hitting & out-competing RPI for large slices of the game. Union finished their checks all night. The RPI defence struggled to initiate clears and they allowed U to gain the blue line at will. Credit goes to U for keeping the pressure on RPI in neutral ice.

Credit to RPI for staying tough and making it a game, but we've got a lot of work to do before next weekend, especially without D'Amigo. These next 5+ games will provide a very stiff test for the squad. Sorry, if I am channeling DocD in these "1/2 empty" thoughts, but that's how I see it. I'm sure I'll cheer up come tomorrow.

Not a lot to add to what has been said about last nights game except that Paul Kerins found a new gear.
He committed the dumbest penalty of the night (only because of the situation, late in the game). But when he came out of the box, he was a different player.
I think we may have a new offensive force.
He has to have new found confidence after his last three minutes of regulation last night.
I look forward to watching him next weekend.

As an aside, When Bentley comes onto the ice at the beginning of each period, they come out in numerical order. I don't think that I have ever seen that before.
There starting goalie was number 1. I wonder if they come out in reverse order when there other goalie (number 35) starts.

I just try to call them the way I see them. Agree 100% with your thoughts in this post. We seem tomatch up well with some teams-but when we get the bigger and stronger squads-we get pushed around quite a bit. This may be why we seem so fragile this year-lots more injuries than one would expect. We do have a load of talent on this team-but they have to stay healthy.

EHF-you are beginning to scare me. You noticed the numbers on the uniforms as they came out?

Bently was the most polite team i have seen in years!:) Their wingers tried to play non contact hockey. They were also one of the smallest teams i have seen in a few years.

Many years ago, RPI did that also. I think that the math requirements have been relaxed at the 'Tute.

FWIW, regarding next seasons schedule, I heard during an interview on wrpi with Bentley coach Ryan Soderquist that the Falcons will be playing RPI next season for a 4th year in a row.

They also have a good sense of humor, especially #12 when he came over to the penalty box only to have me and a friend "greet" him.

There's a decent correlation that when teams do this, they typically stink. They're looking for any advantage they can get. :D

Just a couple thoughts about last night's game. Kerin's and Polacek were the best players on the ice for RPI. I was hoping for the seniors sake, they could have pulled off the win. However, the biggest thrill I got, was after Union went up by 2, seeing those that were departing the field house early, scrambling to find seats for the last minute of the game before overtime......priceless!!:)

Well played, GLM. But I wonder if any other coaches would be this way if refs actually called the clutch-and-grab as a penalty for holding.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Glad to see the tournament was entertaining for those of you who got to be there. Seems it was a pretty good effort aside from the ultra-boneheaded penalties by Polacek and Brutlag.

The two things that concern me the most at this point are the health of Bergin and D'Amigo. I agree with previous posts that Bergin seems to be a difference maker for our defense. Hopefully the reason he missed the Union game was that the coaches just decided to be cautious. We may need him more than we need D'Amigo.

As far as Jerry goes, I'm glad that the initial prognosis is on the mild side but I sure hope that we aren't looking at a reply of Helfrich from last year. He came back and was very diminished. Until D'Amigo is 100% I don't want to see him on the ice. It's defintely a good thing that we are about to enter the semester break and that he sits until at least the 29th. If he needs longer then he should sit longer.

With luck, all he will need is 2 weeks and he stays in the running for team USA.

BU does this too. Starting goalie always comes out first, regardless of number. Then, it's 2-3-4-5, and down the line in numerical order. Parker also gets the team out of the locker room when there is :26 seconds on the clock (can be :26 or 1:26, there just needs to be :26 in there somewhere). When I heard him talk about these the only insight he would give is that it's BU tradition.

Kerins' boarding penalty was complete BS. Boileau went down because he was anticipating pressure from behind (I'll keep my comments to myself ;) ) and overcompensated. He fell BACKWARDS on his a** because Kerins WASN'T driving him into the boards.
So, apparently a typical phantom penalty from an ECAC ref is now a dumb penalty on PK's part, hmm.

I will admit that I was about as far away from the play as you can be at HFH, but he hit him from behind and into the boards. If Boileau is smart enough to anticipate that, then Kerins should be smart enough to stay away from it with 3 minutes or so left in a game that we had momentum in.
I give him great credit to his response when he came out of the box.
He has become my favorite engineer for his play after the penalty.
