You mean "The Swarm". Which considering it was only one mascot made it a misnomer too.

Well there was for a while the Bee, the Momma Bee and a Baby Bee. I will never forget the Swarm at Joe Louis Arena in 1985 skating around with the MSU banner and winning over the crowd for RPI.

GRussinko- I don't recall the band members doing the "Horse" run at Saturday's game. How did that get started, and what is the meaning behind the 2 band members galloping around HFH?

They gallop around using a coconut shell to make the noise while the band plays the theme from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It's a take on the opening scene in said movie where they are galloping across Britain pretending to ride horses.

I also what like to know, did anyone ever get hurt running with the flag before (like falling down the stairs), after we score?

I don't know if anyone's been hurt running the flag after goals, but I can't recall anyone since I've been here (04-05). Several people have stumbled, I think a few have tripped but none were particularly bad.

I ran the flag for most of my 4 years there (00-04), and I'm happy to say I never got injured. However, I did have some lovely people from Union try to throw a soda at me, and had security once try to tackle me for running with the flag saying that I was causing a disturbance.

I dodged the soda rather easily, and the great Houston Field House staff restrained the officer before she could stop me.

That reminds me of the episode during my freshman year when SLU was in town. It was a back and forth affair - the Engineers scored 2, then SLU tied it 2-2, then the Tute got 2 more, then SLU tied it at 4.

Some SLU dipstick sitting in Section 1 decided to emulate the flag runner by taking off his St. Lawrence sweatshirt and running around the Field House with it when the Saints scored - he got booed loudly on the north side the first couple of times he did it.

I don't remember whether it was after the 3rd or 4th SLU goal, probably the fourth, but when he tried to run down the stairs next to Section 22, a bunch of us grabbed him, held him down, and gave him an atomic wedgie. Public Safety was about to step in and save him but when they saw what we did to him and that we were letting him go, they started laughing. RPI ended up winning 6-4, so the joke was on him.

What an awful way to describe your own team. I'm sure they don't ride a mini school bus.

Thanks for the negative rep!
It's nice to know you can still dish it out and not take it in.
Oh, so, predictable.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

It's old and boring. Who reads newspapers anymore?

Unity is important but at some point it just becomes uber-creepy.

And for the record, we have some of the most knowledgeable fans in the nation. Were you at the PEI game? The student section knew who which freshmen to be looking at.

There's a guy in Sect. 6 who brings a Kindle to the game - he reads it before and during the periods...Maybe we can ask him to stand and shake it during intros? :D

It's been awhile since i've discussed wedgies, but don't Atomic wedgies involve the usage of a Ben Gay type of product? Do you carry that on you, just in case? :D

I failed to mention the great job the Greeks did in making HFH rock on Saturday night. I hope RPI keeps winning and the Greeks keep representing at the games...

No one at HFH in recdent memory. I do recall the Clarkson Knight catching an edge while skating up in Lake Placid --he ended up clanging his helmeted head off the cross bar..nearly tearing one earlobe off. The kicker was guy didn't even realize he was injured until he came off the ice and someone mentioned the blood running down his neck...classic.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I was just reading a copy of the RPI Fiscal Year 2011 Performance Plan and came across this:

This makes me doubt we'll be seeing Puckman on official merchandise much longer.
Wow, and I thought Ralph was a well-informed fan...he's got nothing on you! :D

I reserve neg rep for losers and whiners. Just because you're both doesn't exempt you.

And since when am I "not taking" every little bit that's thrown at me? I take every little bit that I'm given and I throw it right back. That's how I roll. You know, if you tried not acting like a dick towards me, maybe I wouldn't be one in return.

Now go run along. I don't bother you on your crappy thread.

Action 2: Develop a plan to increase revenue through a licensed apparel program.

Action 3: In collaboration with Administration, procure a new ticketing system to improve efficiency and revenue generation

On both items: About ******ing Time!!! I never understood why I couldn't buy RPI labeled apparel from anywhere other than the RPI bookstore. I've always felt that has only hindered us in getting our name out there.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

18 votes in this week's poll puts RPI at #23. Obviously someone took notice of the team's performance over the weekend. Hopefully that performance continues next weekend.

And we are 1-1-1 against teams ranked above us that we have played-not bad to start the year. Nice to at least get a few votes.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

They also seem to be going back to having RPI as an acceptable name and not always using Rensselaer. E.g., the football uniforms now have RPI on them while last year they had Rensselaer. I also agree with that.

In sports, it's RPI, because it's easy to spell.
In music, it's Rensselaer, because it rhymes well with a certain beverage. :P

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

It kind of helps when you're in the middle of the action, so to speak.

BTW, RHamilton, does RPI TV participate in the post-game press conferences?

As of right now, no, we don't. It's something we'd like to start doing. I've been pushing for us to shoot post-game press conferences and pre-game interviews with WRPI.

I believe right now the post-game press conference is shot by Kevin Beattie of RPI Athletics.

Also, I'm going to try to get a small crew together to shoot all 4 Thanksgiving Break games featuring RPI vs. Bentley, Union vs. Lake Superior State, and some combination of the above on Saturday (hopefully RPI vs Union in the championship game!). Most of our club will be on vacation, but I'll be around. At a bare minimum, we'll be able to provide coverage better than the normal B2 single camera, and in all likelihood I'll be streaming to Ustream.

In other RPI sports news, we'll be broadcasting this weekend's football game against Merchant Marine at 1:00 on Saturday, and possibly men's soccer on Sunday (if they win the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday).
