Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I recall #7 tossing his stick in the air a few times when he got it lifted.

He was such a tool. He did that at least 3 times that I remember - once at neutral ice and he almost smacked it into the scoreboard. Good job, numbnuts. Thanks for the double minor in the 1st.

Well, if they can't win normally, they have to think of something stupid to do. Like 22 during the Yale game, I thought he was going to actually start a fight in the faceoff circle.

Brown was a lot better than I had expected them to be. I give them credit for hustling out on the ice. They looked like RPI the last few years, hustling but not able to convert and taking stupid penelties. I thought we looked a little lazy at times on Saturday. I think Kennedy had a good game, and I'm happy to see Merth playing his game, and not taking as many penelties as last year. The forwards are fun to watch. And I'm especially happy to see Puckman for the whole game, even during periods. My daughter loves to give him high 5's.
I am assuming he is not on the ice with the team when they first come out on the ice for the anthems, because he's not a good skater. I saw him out on the ice once, or twice at earlier home games, and he looked a little shaky on skates :)

Great to see 2 home wins and an early tie for 1st in the standings.

Just got back to Potsdam tonight. Will be at Cheel and Appleton this weekend.

Lots of fans making the journey to the Great White North? Forecast looks great - not too often do you have good driving weather for this trip!

One of the nights he was on the ice it was a substitute from the band (who played high school hockey and plays intramurals, explaining why he could suddenly skate) but yes, typically I think we haven't seen him on ice due to a lack of skating skills.

I do have a bone to pick with the Institute regarding their apparent phase out of Puckman in progress. Off the jerseys, off most if not all of the merchandise, and now last night all of a sudden off of the new ring of honor banner. Why make the fifth banner different than the first four just to replace Puckman with the diagonal RPI? I wonder what it is that has them scaling their use of the logo back so much.

Zebras gave him way too much leeway ...they should have bounced him several times for nutsin' around . I have the same complaint about last night's game...the refs seemed determined to host faceoff clinics instead of executing one of their core responsibilities -- that being keeping the game moving. Also, Brown continually tried to change lines on icings or after RPI's line was out there. I even saw one of their AC's laughing after his line was put back on the bench. If I'd been reffing that game I would have warned Whittet to knock it off or else he could think about it while his team was in the box for delay.

RPI continues to win a much better % of faceoffs...I don't know what the stats are, but it has been a sight for my sore eyes !

I'm going to be in Minnesota looking at Beavers.

Should I be a tool and start a thread for my 19,000th post? Nah.

I'm heading to deer camp midweek, and I won't be all that far from Potsdam. By Friday, I 'll be ready for a shower... I'm very tempted to show up at Cheel in my Real Tree gillie suit sporting a 4 day "funk", where I will then plunk myself down next to two Clarkson townies. I'll fit right in ...that is until I erupt after RPI's first of many goals... :D :D

Word is that the pep band will be making the trip up.

I have a sinking suspicion that with the change from Redhawks to Engineers for a universal RPI team name, they want a more universal mascot. I hope to continue to see Puckman at home hockey games. I imagine that Troy would erupt in mass riots if Puckman was ever retired as an official mascot. However, it's not unreasonable to expect the institute to also adopt a symbol which fits all of its sports. It will be interesting to see what else starts appearing in RPI merch. and media.

This was spectacular news to come home to, wish I could have been at HFH for the proceedings. Looks like York had a nice weekend in goal and the offensive engine is rolling. Sadly I'll be busy for the road trip but I hope to get back in action next weekend.

I was just reading a copy of the RPI Fiscal Year 2011 Performance Plan and came across this:

Strategy 6: Improve identity by creating a consistent athletic mark to be utilized by all sports programs on uniforms, correspondence, apparel, and promotional materials. (J. Knowlton) (F4.1)
Action 1: Insure all athletic branding utilizes new marks and logos.
Action 2: Develop a plan to increase revenue through a licensed apparel program.

This makes me doubt we'll be seeing Puckman on official merchandise much longer.

The only other Hockey related item is as follows:

Strategy 8: In collaboration with Administration, complete the transfer of the Houston Field House programs to the Athletic Department by the start of FY11 and consolidate the ECAV and Houston Field House Ticket Office Operations.
Action 1: Develop transition plan that is cost neutral to both organizations.
Action 2: In collaboration with Administration, increase hockey revenue, sponsorships and events at HFH.
Action 3: In collaboration with Administration, procure a new ticketing system to improve efficiency and revenue generation

and it's always fun for the guys on the mini school bus wearing hockey helmets:p

What an awful way to describe your own team. I'm sure they don't ride a mini school bus.

Col., listen to your fanbase on this one, the athletic mark IS Puckman! Puckman makes us unique, even the opponents see that. RPI hockey will never be the same without it, unless of course the school wants to abandon our sport of two national championships, which is a terrible mistake for marketing, especially in this part of the country.

Someone apparently thinks that it is too cartoonish. That despite the fact that almost everyone, whether they are RPI students/alums or fans of other teams, seems to like it. The only problem that I see with it is that it is not relevant for the other athletic teams.

Although the reasons for getting rid of Puckman aren't PC reasons like Denver getting rid of Denver Boone, I certainly can see a running battle with the Admins on this also.

BTW, remember that RPI also got rid of the Swarm which also was well received by the student/alum population. IIRC, that was used first by the football team but spread elsewhere.

It surprises me, however, that the Admins have decided to call all of RPI's teams the Engineers and not use Red Hawks for some. I agree with that. They also seem to be going back to having RPI as an acceptable name and not always using Rensselaer. E.g., the football uniforms now have RPI on them while last year they had Rensselaer. I also agree with that.

GRussinko- I don't recall the band members doing the "Horse" run at Saturday's game. How did that get started, and what is the meaning behind the 2 band members galloping around HFH? I also what like to know, did anyone ever get hurt running with the flag before (like falling down the stairs), after we score?
