Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

For the football fans-RPI won today over Merchant Marine 13-10 in the season finale. All things considered we should have had a better year-losing several games by taking very bad penalties or giving the ball away on turnovers. We end the season 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the conference. At least this was another winning season overall and kudos to all the student athletes on the team and coach King.

a bad sign for the hockey team this evening. :D ;)

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Fascinatingly incomplete!

I do like at the start the author describing the Liberty League as one of the nation's traditional conferences. Not only is it D-III, it is less than 15 years old and only five years old with that name.

Did Bryce Merriam really play in the USHL? Not as I remember.

Let's see, the ECAC's first year was 61-62, and this is 09-10, so this makes it the ECAC's 48th year. Not.

My son plays youth hockey and the league subscribes all players to USA Hockey magazine. This month, there is an article on "Great Traditions in College Hockey" which notes 4 "favorites". Portion of that article below...

"Big Red Freakout at RPI - There's very little love in the air on one night around Valentine's Day each winter when Rensselaer students come to the rink clad head-to-toe in red, determined to make so much noise that on more than one occasion they've been threatened with a penalty for disrupting play. Students usually get a small freebie (like a red hat or tee shirt) upon entering the rink. Although the red plastic horns given to students in 1987 produced such a cacophony that the NCAA issued what is now known as the "RPI Rule" which bans artificial noisemakers from college hockey rinks. The 33rd annual Big Red Freakout is Feb. 20, when the Engineers host Princeton."

The article also has a pic of some fans wearing Big Red Freakout tee shirts and holding "Go Red" and "Go White" personal banners, I would have loved to have seen a little reference to the beloved Puckman...particularly as the have a pic of some guy holding a fish (New Hampshire) and the Lake Superior State players ringing some bell. Puckman has WAY more symbolism that that !!

For the record, BRF freebies are given away to all in attendance...

RPI soccer won today in the first round of the Div III NCAA tournament 1-0 and moves on. With both football and soccer winning-could we have a triple play with RPI hockey tonight?

Let's make it four.

Red Cloud's Rules for a First Round Bye
1) Average 3 points on home weekends.
2) Average 2 points on road weekends.
3) Don't play like a******s against the travel partner.

Fret not, Americans.

Tonight's late loss also has the likely side benefit of inducing continued sleeping on RPI, which is enjoyable.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I don't know where we were last night. Did they play a midnight fire drill prank on us? It's almost as if we slipped into old habits. York kept us in the game, but that can only do so much.

Penalty kill: COVER THE GUY IN FRONT OF THE GOAL! Twice in the third, that person was wide open, and the 2nd time they made us pay. As if we didn't learn from the UMASS or the Yale game. I realize that you can't go man-on-man when you're down a man, but you can at least have one person on the guy in front of the goal, which IMO is the most dangerous person on the power play out there, aside from the natural danger, the person with the puck.

Outshot 21-3 in the 2nd, 37-15 for the game. I realize that does happen, but we spent a decent amount of time in the SLU zone. Where was the idea of firing at the net and looking for a tip, a rebound, or other junk like that? I feel a bit bad for Chase Polacek and Brandon Pirri having to play multiple double shifts in the 3rd (even treble shifts), as they were actually looking to go on net.

Don't let this season go south this time. Play your game, work hard, and we will be successful.

OK RC. At least now I know I don't need a Mountain Dew on the drive home for Appleton, seeing as how it's closer than HFH. :p

Just a couple of tweaks that need be done, though I'm sure Coach is already aware, at least what can be told from the Troy Record article. Not to mention Union did tick them off a bit on Friday.

But, that was yesterday. Time to look towards Buffalo for the next one.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I would think SA was a tad upset on the bus ride after the game. As I mentioned on the score thread-some teams you match up well with and some you dont. SLU is a tougher match up for us and they have a coach who makes wonderful adaptations during a game and it appears he did just that after the first period. Perhaps we really needed the offensive threats of Helfrich, Lee and Bergin after all. In any case it is a dose of reality hitting. We are a vastly improved team over the last couple years but we are not all the way to the top by any means. Big physical teams still are a tough match up for us. I still think 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the ECAC is a far better start than most expected. Just a little step backward last night-it's what we do about it that will say a lot about where this season goes.

Niagara is winless so far-anyone else think that SA doesnt play York wednesday? I would also expect all the wounded to be rested. Sure could use a win to get us back on track but not worth taking any chances either.

I look for Merriam on Wednesday, it is the perfect spot for him.
Also, I don't expect to see Helfrich until the tournament. Give him all the rest he needs and then get him ready for ECAC games.
In the two games that I have attended this year, we did not react well to being hit. When Yale and AIC got physical, we got timid. We need to change that.
Cornell will show up and hit us all over the rink. We need an answer for that.
We still have time to work on that as we have four games before we go back to league play. We have to take advantage of the OOC games.
I know that it would be great to win our tournament, and we should this year, but I am more concerned with ECAC games. By the end of the season, we should be ready for anything.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Looking at stats so far overall, Eric Lampe of Q-Pac and Chase Polacek are tied for most goals in the ECAC this season with 9, Chase has outright lead on points in the ECAC with 16, while Allen York has commited the most highway robbery with 266 saves. On top of this, Chase Polacek has scored at least one goal in the past six games, two of the games with a hat trick on points.

Conference-wise, Chase is 2nd in points only to a player high above Cayuga's waters (Greening), also our scoring defense is tied for top with Q-Pac (though not the same records).

Our opponents may have to send in the trucks (hopefully not with John Murphy on them :D ), because this guy's on fire!

Disagree.

I don't have a problem with you disagreeing.
Can you elaborate? Have you seen them in person this season?
I am not trying to start an arguement, I would like to know what you saw.
It just seemed to me that when the opposition starting hitting, they took over the game. Even if it was only for 5 or 10 minutes. It happened, and we have to react quicker.
I also believe that when we are the more physical team, we play much better.
We have a couple of very good "hitters" on our team. :D

Agreed-but we do seem to get a lot of reputation penalties-by which I mean if the ref hears a loud bang up against the boards he assumes we did somethng wrong and calls it. We do seem to get thrown out of our game by hard hitting aggressive teams though.

Seth expects to win every game, but I bet he is happy with the season even the weekend. Happier than his buddy at Miami.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Credit Joe Marsh. After losing 4 senior defensemen from last year and significant scoring I thought they would be at the bottom of the pile. Somehow he has the team competitive.
