RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Ankles are definitely random as to when they will be better. Sometimes it's the next morning, sometimes it's a week and a half later, sometimes it's 2 months. I know I've been pretty lucky during my limited "athletic" prowess (no, getting up to the refrigerator to get a beverage is not what I mean :D ), but I'm glad Tyler is taking it easy, and thinking more about his future. Many players in many sports have had nagging injuries just because they pushed it too much when they were young.

I'm looking forward to a good weekend tonight. Look for the opponents to try to match their best defense up against the freshmen, and have one guy just trying to hammer Chase Polacek. Hopefully Pat Cullen, AAG, and Paul Kerins step up to the task.

Does anyone know if there are any Niagara fans who post regularly on USCHO? I am wondering if I should start a separate thread for that game after Saturday's game ends. If it will just be us talking among ourselves, there is no real need for such a thread since we can do that here.

I can't recall seeing any Niagara fans on here. I know they exist, I just don't know that they do around here.

On some nights we look like the coaches' pick was dead on, on others, we look like a 5th - 8th place team.

The effort is there, but we can't score on the Power(less) play, and dumb penalties kill us. With all that, I would not be surprised with a weekend sweep - either way.

There have still been dumb penalties, and there have been some growing pains on the power play, but we are scoring at a respectable 17.3% clip (aka double the rate of last year). Give credit where it's due.

As far as Helfrich's ankle, I agree with resting it. You don't want to risk the rest of his season over a couple of early season games. If this were another sport maybe, but there is a lot of stress on the ankles in hockey.

One of the best things about Polacek's game - aside from the scoring :D - is his ability to always have his head on a swivel. Opponents very rarely ever get a clean lick on him as he is very aware on the ice. Love it.

I just got home from the Cornell-Yale game (4-2 Bulldogs including an ENG). Yale's team is fast and skilled. I'm even more impressed that the Engineers beat them soundly last week at HFH. I was probably also the only one in Ingalls Rink that let out a whoop when they flashed up RPI 4 Clarkson 2 on the scoreboard at the end of the 2nd period. It's taken Seth a while to get his team in place, but there's a sense of anticipation going into each weekend that I haven't felt in years.

Very happy with the start of the season so far, although I'm only getting news through USCHO, collegehockeystats, and text messages from a few friends. Hopefully this keeps up past January, when I move back east and get to see this team for myself.

One very encouraging thing I've noticed - in both tonight's game against Clarkson and last week against Yale, we were up 2-0 before our opponent tied the game at 2-2. In previous seasons, those two games probably would've ended 5-2... but we would've been on the losing end of the score. It's nice to see that giving up a goal or two doesn't shake us up - we seem to have the confidence to come back and finish the job. This is very good to see.

(Now... would I rather we never gave up those two goals in the first place? Of course. But I'll take the wins any way we get them.)

I noticed we stopped hearing his name quickly last night-was reticent to ask if he got hurt. The injuries are piling up and we just cannot take many more even though the wins are piling up at the same time. Hope Bergin is OK-would like to see both him and Rabbani back in for tonight. We may need a pair of fresh legs to finsih off the North Country duo.

I agree about the injuries, we can't lose a new player every game.
But we do have depth, and it seems that all the players are on the same page, similar to the NJ Devils when they have to bring up players from lowell.
It is the system that works and we still have our core offense and defense.
Just stay out of the penalty box. :(

Correct-10 penalties last night was like going back to old bad habits. I do disagree with the depth angle though. Any injuries to the freshmen and we are in severe trouble. We need one more recruiting class like this one and then I would agree that we were sound enough to withstand losses of personnel better.

For the football fans-RPI won today over Merchant Marine 13-10 in the season finale. All things considered we should have had a better year-losing several games by taking very bad penalties or giving the ball away on turnovers. We end the season 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the conference. At least this was another winning season overall and kudos to all the student athletes on the team and coach King.
