Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

The discussion on the RPISPORT-L right now is mindnumbingly stupid. Somebody ran their mouth about D'Amigo and his effort, negatively comparing it to his showing in the WJC, and I don't blame his mom for chiming in and calling him on it. It was a low blow and was highly unnecessary. Lots of people saying a lot of stupid things - the bedwetters running wild.

That doesn't make it much different from what goes on here.

That particular post, besides for being totally wrong, was most out of place. It has been clear for years that the families of players read and post there. I wonder what he was expecting to get in response.

JD'A may have some correctable weaknesses, but he definitely is one of the most talented, and apparently hard working, hockey players at RPI in the history of the program. If he stays at RPI for three or more years, I expect to see a second banner with the number 9 on it hanging in the HFH.

Edit: At my age, I may not live long enough. :(

Now that I'm feeling better.....

I just have this itching feeling that going into the next week (not this week, but the week after), we really do NOT want to play Clarkson. Based on the way this season has been going for the entire ECAC, I would not be surprised if they are at the point where they're ready to make a push, and do similar to the noise Brown and we made in the playoffs last year. I know it seems stupid, and it's against Kepler's laws of ECAC hockey, but it's just my intuition.

But, we control our own destiny. Let's win against Colgate, avenge December, and go one game at a time, as we have been doing all season.

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

Any suggestions for the title of Part V?

RPI V: If we manage to close this thread the season will have been glorious
RPI V: The Final Frontier
RPI V: For Vendetta
RPI V: Chase for the Championship
RPI V: In which Beman continues to rant incoherently
RPI V: Home for the Playoffs
RPI V: Albany's Last Stand
RPI V: Jerry D'Amigo is an American Hero
RPI V: The Calm Before the Storm

Actually that last one might make a good off-season title.

I like 1, 4, and 7 the best. I agree that 9 could be a title for an off-season thread. I'll go with 4 although other submissions and opinions are most welcome.

Unfortunately, I have to be in NJ on Friday so I will miss the Colgate game. I am going to try and get to Lynah Saturday (if there are still tickets). Where are those of you with tickets sitting?

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

IMO RPI looks to be a tired hockey team and the last thing they need is a brutal practice. I also feel that if this team is going to advance any further than last year in the playoffs a bye is a must.

I agree that the team, especially some of the frosh, looks tired right now. A bye would certainly do a great deal for the tired and banged up.

As for calling this just one of those games; Horse Hockey! If they hadn't lost to Brown and Dartmouth and given up that late lead at home against Harvard in recent weeks, you could say that this was just a blip and forget about it. As Appert said, this team lacks maturity. I think there is also a lack of mental toughness, especially among the defensemen.

Klemba was superb, but that does not explain the giveaways in our own end and penchant for allowing opponents to stand around in front of our net. The RPI d-men need to knock some people around in the crease.

If people are bad-mouthing D'Amigo, they are indeed not paying attention. He made some mistakes, like giving up the puck right in front of Merriam on the 4th goal, but so did a lot of other guys. Saturday was not a good performance defensively, but I do think they will rebound this week and in the playoffs.

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

I didnt have a chance to go to the game Sat night, but taped and watched later. I agree with whoever posted the same thought, but didnt have a good feeling after not scoring in the first 10 min. I didnt think we played great, but also didnt think poorly either...as typical with hockey it was a couple of 10 second lapses at times and Princeton capitalized. Whatever. Lets not make a huge deal out of it because I would be willing to bet bottom dollar that the players themselves are way less than pleased with the outcome of the game.

A couple more thoughts...
1.) Did anyone actually think that this team would be in the running for a first round bye at the start of the season ? I dont think so. Granted, play has been up and down and we could / should have won a couple that we let slip by, but I cant be anything but enthuiastic over this team, its potential, and its future.
2.) I cant for the life of me believe that posters are taking swings at some of the players that they are. D'Amigo ? Are you serious ? What a difference this year's class has made. They're FRESHMEN. Our biggest issue if going to be keeping them around long enough to be able to make a serious run in the NCAAs. For those knocking some of these kids, tell me what team in the ECAC (and in particular those teams currently above us in the standings) wouldnt want guys like D'Amigo playing for them ? I'll take a whole team of him and we'd be unstopable.
3.) I see that LeBouf (sp?) just committed - thats a great addition for us (what is he, like 6'4" and 190 lb defenseman). Beautiful.
4.) If the commits that we have come on board this year, this team will be frightening.

Wanna a refresher - go back and read any of last year's end of season threads....people were ready to jump off bridges - and maybe rightly so. We are in a whole different league (of play) this year. I for one still dont mind flying a bit under the radar screen a bit. We have the ability to win this weekend, and even if we dont we still have the ability to win the ECACs. When's the last time we could say that ? Further, lets not be shortsighted with how incredibly far this team has come in the space of a single season.

Go you RED !!

For 11 of 12 teams, the answer to this is always Section O.

This year I have attended more live games than any year since 1993.
I have sat in sections 9 and 10.
The people in those sections have at one point wanted to get York out of the net and put in Merriam. This weekend, they were all over Merriam and wanted York.
They are caught up in the minute, and really don't see the whole game.
They blame the goalie for goals that were caused by defensemen and forwards.
Goalies have been left out to dry on too many of the goals scored this year.
I have confidence in both goaltenders when the team plays defense infront of them. And they both help out when handling the puck behind the goal.
The rest of the team needs to communicate with them if they are going to come behind the net to play the puck when the goaltenders are out playing the puck.
As for the freshmen, everyone keeps bringing up D'Amigo, and he certainly deserves the accolades, but come on. Pirri is piling up points this year and making everyone he plays with look good. If I were to vote for outstanding freshman, right now it would be Pirri.
That is not to say that I don't like D'Amigo.
We certainly would not be playing for a bye if not for both of them.

I had them pegged 5th. Although it was possible in my mind, I did not actually pick.

It's only because we lost Freakout. And one chance Jerry had, he just happened to miss on an open net. Supposedly these two things mean that Jerry sucks and Appert should be fired. I don't know why people are complaining about 1 game when they most likely did not attend, watch, or listen to the previous 33.

I'm excited for it, too. I wonder how far back the other team will skate from certain players like Curadi. :D

Some have patience, some don't. Those who don't now wear garnet and consider themselves of the Holland type. ;) I'm happy that we cannot finish below 500 in the conference (exactly 500 is still possible), and if we win at least one of the next 4 games, we'll finish at or above 500 overall. I wasn't following RPI hockey the last time that happened.

Fight you WHITE !!

Last year at this time I was hoping for 500 this season and challenging for the championship next. By the beginning of this year I did think they could finish top 4 (and I have proof!).
