Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

The 5th place team gets a first round bye and then a second round AWAY series...I don't really think the 5th seed is all that desirable given the road series you're forced to play. A 6th seed to me seems better as it will give home ice, at least. I'm not scared of a first round series against the basement teams at home.....though I think we all expect Niagara could pull out a miracle..........

Sorry, I'll take the guaranteed pass into Round 2 any day. Too much can happen in a three-game series. Sure, it'd be nice to see a home playoff series, but that's what the BCA is for. ;)

I agree. The less 3 game series this team plays the better. Also, players can get healthier, or less banged up.

But to get that, I think they need to get at LEAST 2 points from Robert Morris. Mercyhurst and Canisius play each other, so wins will help keep pace with them. Bentley is playing some of the Eastern teams - so they are likely to get points. And you can't forget Holy Cross and Air Force charging behind them. RIT will lose tiebreakers to Holy Cross - but I am not sure about Air Force since the teams split.

If i'm not mistaken, Air Force currently holds the edge by virtue of 12 AH wins as opposed to our 11

I believe I have a change in heart with Ruby. Both Rotolo and Ruby are both medicore at best.

A 1.89/2.14 GAA and a .920 save percentage is far from mediocre.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

First off... Ruby only needed to save 16 shots total last night... This means his defensive men were working hard for him last night. Just because he got a shut out doesn't mean my thoughts on him changed. One game does not change anything.

Who cares if it's only 16 shots? He saved every single one of them. Holy Cross didn't just throw in the towel and call it a game after the first puck drop - they put some pressure on RIT. And Ruby made the saves, when he needed to, when they counted. If Ruby had let in just one goal he would have had .9375 SV% - that's right in line with the top 5 in the entire D1.

As this was the second shut out of this season (utterly embarrassing)

Could you please clarify what is utterly embarassing

Last year the 5,6&9th teams made the semis with the fifth place team winning . iThink it matters more the moral of each team and its commitment.

With the parity in the league this year it will be critical to take four of eight points over the last four games and even then, Air Force could easily take six of eight as they have Niagara and Canisius. That happens and RIT is hosting a first round playoff. It could very well come down to RIT's last game of the regular season at home against Mercyhurst. Since Air Force finishes at home against Canisius, we might all be following that last regular season Saturday night game very closely after our game concludes. Exciting two weeks coming up.

My post was in the context of who would hold the league tie breaker should RIT and Air Force finish in a tie in the final standings. I agree that in the playoffs, anything could happen!

Only allowing 16 shots also reflects back to a stingy defense which is definitely not a bad thing.

The goalies this year have allowed way to many "soft goals". Soft goals are the worst. Not only from a fan stand point but the confidence of the goalie and for the team as well. Nothing is a motivation killer like a soft goal.

Thanks for the negative reputation by the way. I guess people are not suppose to disagree with one another.

I do disagree with you - but it wasn't me.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

Ice hockey is a team sport so everybody on the ice and the coaches are responsible for any goal scored against their team. From the games I've caught, it seems like a defensive or mental breakdown led to goals or a loss\tie of the game or the offense was unable to score when it mattered.

Props to Ruby and the rest of the team for the shut-out, hopefully this gives them the confidence and fortitude to put it to RMU this Friday as this team (RIT) seams to struggle mightily on Friday nights!

If they don't, pity the poor goalie who gets ripped on Saturday morning in this thread.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

RIT has to fix the pp. Same players on the two units since the 1st game. Same results. They couldn't score on a 5 on 3. They have nobody with size in front of the net. The opposing goalie sees every shot.If you seen the 5 on 3 they had no one in front. When they do put someone in front they move to the high slot when the shot from the point is taken and the goalie has no trouble in seeing it. If RIT would have their pp at 20% they would be sitting in 3rd place I believe. As far as the goaltender situation, both are good. Every goalie lets in a soft one now and then as Ginn did on the RIT 2nd goal Sat.Just because they have a great pk doesn't mean they should have a horrible pp

This goes back to RIT's age old offensive philosophy of trying to play too pretty. They have a beautiful set play that they like to run...that has worked exactly once at home all season. And when it works it IS gorgeous to behold, but it's simply too difficult to consistently run. They would be better served getting traffic and banging home rebounds.

We're also very spoiled because we had DeMike and Madolora back to back, two of the best goalies the AHA has seen. To follow that up with Watson, Ruby, and Rotolo is a tough task and RIT's run and gun style doesn't work with just an average goalie.

Re: >>>>>RIT TIGERS... The Polisseum, just like the Ritter only more of us!<<<<<

In addition to that back door set play they used to have another of Lambert feeding Smith on the right dot. Maybe its the same play but using a forward but man was it fun watching Smith snip those corners :)

Exhibit #1 - last year's first round playoff series at Holy Cross. Friday, RIT plays well and wins in overtime. Saturday, half the team gets sick and can barely skate, result - loss. Sunday, most players have recovered enough to play but are still struggling for endurance. Game goes to overtime and the randomness of a bad bounce off a referee's skate ends the RIT season.

Please don't tell me a first round bye is NOT extremely desirable. Avoid the randomness at all costs.

I guess if your argument is that a bye week means we'll get sick that week and not the week after, that's fine. Barring freak accidents though, this is pretty anecdotal and inconsequential.

However playing at home is a natural advantage over playing on the road (such as last years series you referenced) and I would feel very comfortable with RIT's chances of beating any of Army, AIC, Niagara in a 3 games series at GPC.

I don't feel comfortable about going on the road to face Canisius after a week of sitting on our hands. The team is healthy right now, a bye week just interrupts their routine and gives them a chance to lose momentum (assuming they end the season on a high note).

A quick series against a basement team before hosting the #5 seed at GPC seems pretty ideal to me. RIT will have lots of confidence and momentum from the win. And if we lose a series to those teams...well I'm not going to complain and say we should have gotten a bye. I'm going to say we sucked for having lost to a basement team in a 3 game series.

Please clarify.

It sounds like you are saying that getting to play 2 or 3 games at home against Niagara for the opportunity to play in the 2nd round is better than, being able to take a week off and getting automatic entry into those 2nd round of the playoffs.

We're playing on the road no matter what in the seconds round.

Correct unless RIT sweeps or near sweeps these last four regular season games and gets some help that enables RIT to slip into 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in the standings. Not impossible but you never know. The cool thing is at least we're talking about the possibilities of a bye. Certainly a better conversation than we were having last year around this time.
