>> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

Re: >> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

I'm a bit dissapointed in this, as it seems pretty low. Sure we're losing a great goalie and a couple of good players, but it looks like we have the strongest freshman class to date. On the bright side, beating expectations shouldn't be too hard.

RIT tied for 4th with Bentley in today's coaches poll:

Clearly the coaches around the league expect that the loss of Madolora is going to be a significant one.

Okay, who was the idiot who voted Robert Morris the top seed? I think the coaches as they did last year put to much thought into the POD system and drop some Western Pod teams. They also seem to forget recent history if they put that much on Madolora leaving. All do respect to Mads he was pretty much an unknown coming into 10-11 season. He only had a handful of starts and like the two guys Wayne has now looked good in some area and had questions in others. I feel like RIT is being a little written off here with a 4 place pick. They been just as good as Air Force in the regular season, three straight apperances in the Conference Championship game. And Actually I feel better about the team they are being back then in the past couple of years. No real early departures. Top Scorer is back, couple of guys who back in Saracino and Potts was breaking out when he went down last year. I remember telling a Bentley fan that its fine by me to think RIT is going to be down, but I think thats a mistake, guess we will find out.

This is no doubt a young team, but I see a lot of talent and I just am really excited to see the Freshmen, I have a feeling they could be as good as the Burt & Breanner class that just left. I think we going to find out just how good of a consistent recuriter Wayne and Coach Hills are this team. And if RIT is a program that can simply reload... I like their chances as you can see in my preseason predictions....

1. Air Force
2. RIT
3. Niagara
4. Mercyhurst
5. Bentley
6. Robert Morris
7. Canisius
8. UCONN
9. Holy Cross
10. Army
11. AIC
12. Sacred Heart

Would not be surprise at all to see Air Force and RIT being the last two teams standing at Blue Cross. However I think Niagara and Mercyhurst have the ability to crash the part. Let the season begin, as always this will be fun!

Jim Mandelaro, a reporter for the D&C, pointed out: "RIT is picked 4th in AHA coaches poll. Every time Tigers have not been picked first they've won league: 2006-07, 08-09 and 09-10."

As long RIT doesn't get embarrassed its pretty cool

Sure they will come to play, will be interesting. BC is team that plays like RIT, fast and aggressive. Also look up Jerry York when he Coached at Clarkson, he looks just like Wayne Wilson. Swear they could been seperated at birth if they where the same age....

Re: >> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

If the conference make up didn't change drastically from last year I can see a multitude of teams making it to BCA/the finals that don't include RIT or AFA. Uconn brought AF to OT before eventuall falling (yet we couldn't even score a **** goal against them). Benlty came really close to knocking us out at Ritter. Romo def have their strong moments and can easily snag a spot at BCA, while Canisuis really got their act together and have a young/strong team.

Re: >> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

I thought 3rd or 4th would be about right. Watson and Ruby will battle for the top spot. But I think it will be interesting how the defensemen play. And say what you will about our top scorers being back - this was not exactly the prolific offense that we have been used to seeing.

If the freshmen play well, certainly RIT can be a legitimate challenger to the AHA crown.

Re: >> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

"Atlantic Hockey retains last year’s playoff format, marking the first time in league history that it has remained the same for two consecutive seasons. The top four teams receive a bye into the quarterfinal round."

It's a miracle! I'm glad they kept this format, it seems the most fair that the AHA has come up with to date.

Its the tie with Bentley that kind gets me a little mad. I did not think Mercyhurst played consitant enough to earn the number 3 seed, they also have a history of being very inconsitant during the season, normally a much better playoff team. Some may point to the Semi Final game they played against Air Force but I thought handle that game just as well as they handle RIT in the championship. When it came to dicey time, it was all Air Force. But given what they bring back, I can understand why some voted them third. But Bentley, I know what they have, but you still have a team that doesn't have much of a history of consitant play. Given some of the recurits RIT has coming in I found that a bit of a stretch, but as I said thats why they play the games. And I think we are set up to have a lot of fun here if people think RIT is going to drop off that much...

Like what Coach Wilson said, heck even our non conference crowd will like it...

"We always want to get better every day as the season moves on, and with us tied for fourth in the preseason, we have something to improve on right away. Our goals remain the same, as we want to win as many non-conference games as we can, get home ice advantage for the AHA playoffs, and most importantly, win our conference championship, and get to the NCAA Tournament."

If we play AFA at the BCA this year just scoring a goal might be considered a victory ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we've ever scored on them at BCA...

Correct, we have lost 0-5, 0-1, and 0-4 to Air Force at BCA.

Torf is a big game goalie, and he absolutely eats up the attention we give him. In fact, he openly played along with us last year. He feeds off the atmosphere, and the Corner Crew just doesn't seem to get that. The more you chant his name, the more it drives him to give it right back.

Re: >> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

Unfortunately we're stuck against him for two more season. At least Air Force lost Tim Kirby. That guy was SO **** good. Third highest goal scorer and that's from the blue line.

So are you suggesting the Corner Crew be silent when a goaltender like Torf is playing in front of them? I would imagine most, if not nearly all, goaltenders that have achieved enough to play Division I have a pretty even temperment when it comes to things like the rowdy taunts of the opponents' fan bases. I would imagine that with maybe a few exceptions, most D-I goaltenders feed off that stuff more than are "intimidated" or even distracted by it. The Corner Crew (and most other such student rooting sections) do what they do because it's fun and adds atmosphere, thereby invigorating the entire crowd that much more for the home team. I doubt too many are still under the delusion that the stuff they yell can really get under the skin of elite college athletes and affect the outcome of a game.
AFA and Torf had RIT's (and every other opponent's) number at the BCA, crowd or no crowd. They were just better on those given nights.

Well, it's obviously unrealistic for the Corner Crew to leave him alone. It would be nice though, from a personal viewpoint, I am so sick of them yelling "Torf!" because they think it sounds funny. Not really, it doesn't. I guess I got pretty bitter towards the CC in general last year, and whenever Torf played along I found myself liking him more and more.

Although I will say, given the fan bases of most AHA teams, it's not unreasonable to expect that the Corner Crew gives goalies a treatment they are not used to. At least the first time through town. And it's impossible to know what effect atmosphere has on players, but playing goalie is a hugely mental thing and I can see where from time to time, heckling would have some impact. Just not with Torf.

Re: >> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

Goaltenders in College Hockey hear the same kind of stuff no matter where they go or even if they are D-I or D-III. Some placed its just more intense like at RIT. the effect on the game is small at most. Many players from many different years tell me that they normally can not understand many of the cheers coming from corner crew. Focusing on the game they normally do not pick up on much. What makes a difference is just the noise and the energy that comes from the corner crew. It helps gets RIT up a little. Maybe if a goaltender is having a off night the crew might get in his head a little, but other than that I don't it much affect.

I think the biggest affect the Crew has is actually on recuriting. Recurits do see the support and the energy that the Ritter here and they say to themself that they would like to play here...

Torf responds to the Corner Crew. It's amusing ... yes. He feeds off it ... yes. But it also shows that he has been distracted from the game. Obviously, he is darn good and that hasn't cost him yet, but it will one day. Oh yes, it will ... one day. Most likely when that first goal slides by. Please keep distracting him, it can only help. If he needed taunting fans to play well, he wouldn't be as good as he is.
