He took a scoring chance away, but what did he do illegally? No hook, no trip, no interference (skater had touched the puck already), no elbow, no kneeing, no charging, no hitting from behind (used feet to get parallel with skater), no roughing, no cross-checking, etc... I thought so at the time and seeing it in slow-motion confirms that it was a legal open-ice check on a player that had the puck. Sometimes good hits take away scoring chances. That's what they're for. The home crowd will boo that one every time because they all thought they saw a break-away coming, but that doesn't make it a penalty.Given the video angle (which is pretty much the opposite one we had from the pressbox), it should have been called a penalty. As has been explained to me by several referees over the years, the Michigan player took away a potential scoring opportunity so that makes it cross the threshold to being a penalty.
