Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

Also for the record and on the opinion side, I was a little unimpressed at the behavior of the Clarkson pep band. I’ve been watching college hockey since 98 and seen and heard a lot. I’ve seen pep bands participate in colorful cheers with the student section and I am fine with that going on. Even though I agree with them that I think our pep band is mature enough to go “unplugged”, I thought it was a little unclassy for them to be poking fun at the RIT pep band when they (meaning Clarkson’s pep band) were invited guests playing at RIT’s arena.

As I said this is college hockey and I have thick skin, but I do think an official pep band is more representative of the institute they are from and therefore should be held at a higher standard and should not be disrespectful towards another pep band. It was justice, and funny to see that not so horizontally challenged loud mouth with the hat mess up his trumpet solo.

There also were some coordination issues, with them playing when music was playing or the RIT cheer was started, but I give them a pass on that. At least I believe RIT needs to do a better job of working another pep band into the game. I do love having another schools pep band at a game…

From my experience seeing them ever year at Cornell this is the norm for Clarkson band.

Precisely why RIT fans should show more class and never do it again!! :)

Glad to hear it was the green folks who did it. (Actually I was only watching on the TV; couldn't make the game.)

The RIT staff tried to talk to them. They were a bunch of arrogant jerks. They weren't there to do anything but be a pain in the ***. The clown in the giant hat, as big a jerk as he was, wasn't even the biggest of the jerks in that crowd. Trust me, they took their lead from their band leader, who was a royal bag of crap. I did enjoy the guy who looked like John Popper's illegitimate love child butchering of his trumpet solo though. There was a certain poetic justice to it all.

Band aside, of all the fan bases who have traveled to the Ritter in any sort of quantity, they certainly were among the biggest, number wise. And quite honestly, they were among the most arrogant, obnoxious, and ignorant bunch who have bothered to show up. Cornell fans, as rabid as they are, have a certain level of hockey intelligence. Same for several other schools. But as for Clarkson, not so much.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

I have seen my share of RIT hockey games and I was at the Clarkson game:

The atmosphere at the Ritter was great but that was because of the Clarkson pep band and fans. The RIT Pep band and Corner had about 30 people combined. The excuse "RIT
was on break" is unacceptable because so was Clarkson and they showed up in mass on the road and on break. Over the past few years Ritter Arena has become a fun and
easy place to play for opposing teams. There were times when opposing goalies were tormented, now the arena is fun and an enjoyable place to play. Maybe the Clarkson fans
were obnoxious, arrogant etc..... Imagine what their rink is like full of fans like them???? That is a tough place to play! I have seen 1 game at Clarkson, loud, relentless and
difficult to talk to the person next to you much less play a game.

The corner crew people are on here complaining about the Clarkson fans because the Corner crew lost the fan battle in their own rink. I was agitated by the Clarkson fans but
they have a right to cheer and play their music. The whole time I was wondering when the corner crew would show up. Even if the Corner Crew did show up we would hear the
same cheers, same routine etc...its like eating the same food over and over it gets boring. Complain all you want, the bottom line is you got worked in your own arena.

The fans across the rink from the Corner Crew were involved a little but not enough. The Corner Crew makes the atmosphere in the rink, no doubt. But not Friday against
Clarkson. I think it is time for the Corner Crew to recharge and bring something much more fun and exciting to the next home game. Maybe being a little obnoxious your self
will inspire the boys to play with more of an edge like they did a few years ago.

I am a RIT hockey fan and enjoy the Corner Crew. This is what I saw Friday night and over the last few years. I am not against you, I am with you and want the team to win.
The only reason I posted is because the obvious was not being stated "Clarkson fans made the game fun and not the Crew".

If they win at all, WITR guys should put their stat guy on what RIT’s record is in the D-I era when allowing 40 or more shots.

Our stat guy? We have a stat guy? Cool! ;)

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

The excuse "RIT was on break" is unacceptable because so was Clarkson and they showed up in mass on the road and on break.

Clarkson was on a five day break (starting Wednesday, ending tonight). RIT's break also ends tonight, but it started way back on the 18th. And students were kicked out of the dorms. The percentage of RIT fans leaving town for Thanksgiving is considerably higher than it is for Clarkson, or just about any other school on a semester system.

Furthermore, we don't know how many RIT fans failed to get tickets in advance, expecting the day after Thanksgiving to be a bit slow attendance-wise, only to get shut out by visiting Clarkson fans who snapped up tickets en masse.

So tell me again why that's not a valid explanation for the smaller Crew and band? Hell, this is the first year we've had ANY band during break, let alone a small one.

And students were kicked out of the dorms.

That's not true - while I agree most students were home, they are not kicked out of the dorms for Thanksgiving or Spring break. Christmas break is the only break where students are not allowed to stay in the dorms.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

OK this is going to come across as one of those "when I was your age" posts, so read it at your peril. I was a leading member of the Corner crew from 1983-1989, and then took a less-involved position, sitting next to them from 1990-1994 when they finally kicked my *** up to the pressbox.

The first few years was a free-for all. Not a lot of organization but we were loud, obnoxious and mean. There was a lot of individual insults yelled loud enough for most to hear, especially the players since we were hanging over the glass. Really vile stuff, sometimes bad enough to encourage a player to go at us. Middle fingers were big and constant. Other, er, body thrusts, hand gestures, etc. were also common. Fans from other teams would force their way into the corner crew and fights broke out. That had to run its course, eventually. We eventually got more organized - I remember early meetings in the RITSkeller (now the SportsZone or whatever the hell it's called) where we handed out paper with the cheers spelled out. But that was considered a compliment to the vulgar stuff we were still yelling somewhat individually.

I think that's what's lacking. Someone would have a creative idea that was in the context of the game and the opponent, and we would go with it We had some base cheers but at least 1/2 of the stuff was made up on the spot. The context of the cheers did center around the opponent, and we assigned different stereotypes for them.

For example:
1. Elmira - Drunk, ugly, unemployed rednecks that have sex with their sisters.
2. Plattsburgh - Criminals.
3. Union - Frat boys who were more than just friends with each other.
4. Geneseo - Smurfs. RIT wanna-be's. Easy coeds."Save the Bear".
5. Canisius - Ghetto school. Our ***** when it came to hockey.
6. SUNY schools - "State Schools Suck! Welfare College!"
7. Schools from the East - Stuck up preppies. Fat easy girls.
8. Schools from the West - Inferior podunks. Fat easy girls.
9 Referees - Wife beaters, closet lovers, their third eye was their best to see with.
10. Hobart - "**** brown coat!"

I'm not hearing a lot of this anymore directed at certain opponents.

I apologize for the lack of political correctness. Did I mention that the drinking age for some of this time was 18 some of us *may* have enjoyed a few adult beverages before during and after the game? Or that certain ex-members who now give a lot of money to the school used to run keggers out of their car in the parking lot between periods? I guess I shouldn't mention that. Never mind.

In summary, I don't know how much you can get away with anymore, but within the boundaries of what is possible, get creative, get spontaneous. Stop running the same plays and change it up based on what is going on in the game, and with the opponent/

Remember: "That's all right, that's ok, you're gonna work for us someday."

The administration has cracked down a lot. They want a family environment, and want a PG-rated corner crew so there is only so much that can be said. They won't allow the old "3 blind refs" cheer (which we made 4 blind refs when the added the 2nd ref), they won't allow anything with profanity, etc...it's hindering at times, especially when some of us know how bad other schools can get.

My mistake. It's been a while. =) Regardless, it's the rare underclassman who stays over Thanksgiving break.

Furthermore, three quarters of Clarkson's students are from New York, meaning they are within easy driving distance even if they were home for Thanksgiving. RIT's in-state percentage is considerably lower.

I thought the fans were okay, they whined about a few calls that I thought was funny, but everyone including the crew, does that at time. There was some arrogant level that I have come to expect from some ECAC Schools. To date I have traveled to Colgate, Cornell, Clarkson, RPI, Saint Lawrence, and Union. The Cornell fans traveling fans I met I liked, but have to say I was surprised at how obnoxious some fans and the staff was at Cornell. I am not talking about cheers, just general behavior as I moved around the arena and one usher who escaped with just an ugly look from me when she hassled my wife at the start of the 2nd period for her ticket that I had in my pocket. Is it really had to image a lady wearing an RIT outfit would be heading back to the RIT section in the second period? Clarkson fans were okay; again I thought their band did poorly as a band officially linked to the school. RPI was certainly the best experience my wife and I had at an ECAC rink, just seems to be a lot of good people out there.

The excuse "RIT

I think one thing you have to understand is that this is the first break the students at RIT get since the start of the first quarter. There are no Holidays, school is in session every day. After the rush of a ten week quarter everyone wants to get out of Dodge. I think the crew did fine despite the lack of numbers in their ranks and was just as loud as the Clarkson fans. There was an impressive amount of Green but still more Orange out their, it kind of reminded me of the D-III days when the ECAC Tourament seemed to always fall at break and Elmira would be able to get in 40% to 50% of the fans in the building...

1. Elmira - Drunk, ugly, unemployed rednecks that have sex with their sisters.

2. Plattsburgh - Criminals.

3. Union - Frat boys who were more than just friends with each other.

4. Geneseo - Smurfs. RIT wanna-be's. Easy coeds."Save the Bear".

"

That the first list you posted in a long time that is completly true :D

I think a lot of the creativeness has been lost as the Crew has gotten larger. One of the reasons I moved down to the blue line (Besides a better veiw) was that I feel that more of a student section thing and it does seeem more students are coming to the game and in that sense it a better idea to keep it simple. Especially when the new arena comes and their should be a great more number of seats for the corner crew...

Our stat guy? We have a stat guy? Cool! ;)

Don't you have an app for that??? If you need one maybe I can apply, does it pay well :p

Are you telling me that students show up sober now for games? What has happened?!?!?!? And I suppose The Man frowns on sneaking in and partaking of an adult beverage during games now too? :(

In summary, I don't know how much you can get away with anymore, but within the boundaries of what is possible, get creative, get spontaneous. Stop running the same plays and change it up based on what is going on in the game, and with the opponent/

This is the downside to becoming a more of a community event and not a college event. The administration feels the need to make sure nobody is offended and thus take all of the fun out of things. The other problem with the CC is that some people feel the need to be "leaders" and run the CC instead of letting the CC be spontaneous. These leaders get suckered by the Administration that the changes are "for the good of the program" or some other such BS. Thus the cheers become very regimented and even the timing becomes routine. I have seen this same thing happen at other rinks too. It's really a shame. Ugh. :(

Don't feel special about this Tom. My wife and I have had the same season tickets in the same section for 4 years at Cornell and we still need to show our tickets every time we enter the section. Even though the ushers have been the same people for that whole time! I have no idea what the Administration has stuck up their butt about that but it drives me crazy!

As an RIT student I will say that is not a valid comparison, at all, for many reasons that others above have described. Break actually began the afternoon of the 16th, and for many students with monday and tuesday finals, break very well could have begun on the 13th. And believe me, everyone leaves.

As an alumnus, it's been discussed (amongst ourselves, mostly). I personally know at least four (including myself) who would be willing and able to fill in. But in the past, the band has expressed a completely understandable reluctance to hand the reins over to people whom they may not know and who haven't practiced weekly with the band.

However, that was when the band was entirely absent, and the idea under discussion was an alumni-led band. In a case like Friday's, maybe the band would be willing to accept some alumni help to bolster their numbers when break causes them to lag a bit.

The highlights are up from the Clarkson game on YouTube. If anyone wants to know why Defenseman are driving me to an early padded white room just watch the 3rd Clarkson goal. Was even coming back and then Shumway loses his guy after he blocks the shot. Then see three Golden Knight and 4 Tigers in front of Watson and the only Golden Knight to hit the ice did so by tripping over Watson... HIT SOMEBODY!!!! I don't even care if its legal at this point...

Special was not how we felt. It just was all sorts of wrong. My wife is a little uncomfortable in any place she is not familar with and the ushers where any thing but helpful. The lady did see me coming and backed off, and I think she realize she got rude. Just never ceases to amaze me...

Thanks for the video post! It's much clearer to see than on the America One feed. Not to pile on here but, the first two Clarkson goals were a little nausea inducing too. The first goal through Watson's five-hole was ridiculous. I think Clarkson could have kicked a soccer ball through that huge hole. Watson barely moved. I don't think you can fault the defense on that one. The second goal wasn't exactly world-class either. Again, Watson didn't seem to react to the puck at all, like he didn't even see it. You could argue that defensive play(not necessarily just by defensemen) could have been better on that one.

Gotta agree with you on that third goal. The D might as well have skated to the bench for all the good they were doing out there. Could they play any softer?

Thanks for posting. I didn't get to see all of the game so I hadn't saw the first goal.

I think all three goals were soft. The first two were simply blown by Watson. The first one was because of a five hole the size of the grand canyon. The second because he was slow. And the third was because the D wasn't helping and because he went down waaaaaayyyyyy to soon.
