Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

I hate to say this, but:

1) RIT isn't making it to Blue Cross this year. Not with this defense.

2) I'll be surprised if RIT breaks .500 this season.

If I'm wrong with either of those predictions, I'm still going to be disappointed.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

There was lots of hope/conjecture that Maclean would start in his place.

Also, RIT just can't buy a win this year. I'm officially pounding the alarm.

There was zero chance of MacClean starting tonight. If you want you can pound the alarm, but can you do it else where.

Thought coach said it fine in post game interview, they showed up in the last 5 minutes. To cute and to soft, not paying the price. Lost way to many battles. I also thought they throw the puck around too much. Bottom line, when is this team going to show up and play a full 60?

The only big move I would be thinking of if I was Wayne is sitting one if not both of his top two defensemen, don't think it's time yet but the thought is in my mind...

Three point weekend on the road would not be a horrible things, but losing a point to night does add to the frustration...

There's no value in red shirting him when we need a competent goaltender right now. This is not the defenses fault. AIC has a SIGNIFICANTLY worse defense than us, and yet we scored the same amount of goals. Why? They have a goalie.

Our defense is not drastically worse than it was last year. We only lost Haltigin, and if you think he alone made this big of a difference you are only deceiving yourselves. What we're seeing right now is the difference between Madolora and everybody behind him on the depth chart.

It's a combination. Expecting Ruby or Watson (or Maclean) to be Madolora is quite simply unrealistic. And yeah, losing a top pairing defenseman without replacing him with one CAN make a big difference. Everyone slides up a slot in the depth chart. We saw last year how RIT looked vastly different with and without Saracino. Haltigin's not coming back and some of these defensemen need to step up into their new roles if want to have a remotely RIT-esque season.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

I'll also add that it's a bit interesting that we're sitting here talking about defense after a game that RIT resorted to last season form and failed to score more than 2 goals against a very poor defensive squad. It didn't sound like any of the goals came from rebounds (which were there), scrums in front, etc. which was a huge problem with last year's team - they were very much a perimeter offensive team.

Are we sure this team isn't going to have problems scoring goals? They've been the beneficiaries of some extremely shaky goaltending performances (the Michigan win, the RoMo loss) - I'm not so sure they're anything more than an average offensive team...it's just that the defensive/goaltending play (whichever you put the blame on) has been glaringly bad.

Actually we lost lost 3 senior defensemen: Haltigan, Spivak and Eckenswiller. Obviously all were part of the Frozen Four run. We also lost our two toughest and grittiest offensive players in McReynolds and Knowles. Your right about our goaltending expectation, we were spoiled by Madalora.

I'm fairly sure offense is the least of our issues. If you look at the AIC goalie, he's really good. This is a guy who stopped over 60 shots in a game against Penn State, then came out the next night and stopped over 40 more. He's flown under the radar behind a terrible AIC team for a few years now, but it looks like he's ready to his the spotlight a bit more now that AIC isn't as bad as they have been.

We scored a total of 7 in Michigan, 4 against RoMo, 3 against Colgate. These are all good teams, so, it's really the fact that we give up twice what we score that's a problem.

True, I forgot about Spivak. Eckenswiller was nothing special, I don't think he was significantly better than some of our freshmen. It seems to be like having Saracino back, along with an improved Noyes and slimmed down Descautaux should be able to fill in for a Spivak-Haltigin top line. And even if there is some loss in defense, that should not account for us giving up 5 goals a game. This defense is exposing how bad are goalies are (to be fair, this is also true in verse).

Meisner is a very good goalie. AIC's defense is very bad. "Hot goaltending" is one of the largest myths in hockey. AIC has allowed more than 2 goals in all of their games except for 2 this season; tonight's game, and against Penn State. They also gave up 4 to PSU, SIX to Holy Cross, 3 to a horrendous Alabama-Huntsville team...sorry "well they have a good goaltender" doesn't fly. You counteract great goaltending by getting your butt in front of the net, obstructing sight lines, and making him move in tight. None of which RIT has been good at making opposing goaltenders do over the last couple of seasons.

And yeah, defense/goaltending is the greater concern, because they've been awful, but I don't see a 5 goal game against Michigan and a 4 goal game against RoMo, both littered with soft goals, as proof our offense is anything above average. Which, when combined with our defense is freaking scary, since it eliminates winning a lot of shootouts.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

You know what really amazes me. Everyone seems to forget Mads came out of no where. He played a few good games but was more or less an unknown coming into his Junior year. I went into that year thinking Watson had a shot and the Mads just took the job, played very well. But we are not talking about a guy who ever really stole a game or even won the big playoff game. Before anyone jumps me, yeah its hard for goaltender to win a championship game when both games his team fails to score. It just amazes me the god like status he seems to have. Mads is a solid goaltender and I'd love to have him in net for just about any game. But I would actually rank 2 other goaltenders (Gumond, DeMike) ahead of him.

I did not see any of the 2nd Michigan game. But other than the wrap around Watson gave up against Michigan, I really struggle to find a goal that I blame mostly on the goaltender. You need to look up DeMike's Sophmore season. He was terrible, so bad that many of us, including me, was ready to to give up on him and wanted Wilson to bring in a new goaltender to back up Menard for the next season. Give the guys a chance, they are not the big problem this year. If you think other wise you might as well pound salt, cause in the end that is what you are doing...

RIT pust 43 shots on net and hit a cross bar or two, offense there okay on, when they put the effort in. I was a little dissapointed in the effort tonight, seemed they only put together a good last 5 minutes. That is when they had a jump in their step.

BTW, this team is going to be above 500. Anyone wants to take a look at the start of last year. A tie on home ice against Niagara. The crazy game that was Saint Lawrence at Blue Cross. Yes it was a win and fun, but you still left saying boy did we make a lot of mistakes and got away with it. Then a lost against Canisius, crushing lost to Union, and finally Mercyhurst. Then they hit a very disappointing tie to Army on a Friday night game. And the panic button folks were out in force. Then they beat Army and started a 4 game conference win streak, including a win over Air Force and two against Holy Cross. A lot of people on the board were made to look foolish, have we learned anything?

Yeah, anytime the goalie makes all but two saves, he's giving your team a chance to win. In a 2-2 tie, defense wasn't the problem.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

I think we can bring out the old Herb Brooks line on defense. "Better, but still not good". Last goal Ruby was let down by defensemen not tying guys up again, yet all most made the save. Same guys gave puck away right in front of the net. And when it comes to breaking out seems they either get pressure and just thrown the puck around. Or they have time and it gets too cute. If you listen to the post game Wayne still wanted a lot more from his 6 defensemen...

Meisner gave up 0 goals to Alabama. He didn't play. That last five minutes was horrendous. I think AIC was playing three lines for far too long and they got too tired. Very scary. RIT hit two crossbars/posts. AIC had moments and is starting to gel a little better. The 7-10-20 line is starting to show some cohesion.
Not to be mean, but i was amazed at how much your D gave up the puck in your own zone. I don't remember RIT being this bad on D in this respect.
Our D needs to be confident getting the puck out of the zone or RIT is going to pick on this all saturday night.

Need to take three points this weekend, period, or watch the interest in the team start to fade. RIT usually brings "it" every game, that's why folks love them or hate them, there's very little in between. This team is not bringing "it", yet. Let's hope for better Saturday night.

You're right. I knew he got a full night off in a NC game this year, figured it was the Union game. Turns out he just allowed 6 goals in 23 minutes in that game. Oops.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-2013 - Locked, Loaded, And Ready To Roar <<<<<

The two biggest factors resulting in the tie last night:

Meisner made 41 saves, a few of which were extraordinary. #1st star of the game. Ruby has good as well. 4 goals on 74 shots means their combined save percentage was .946.

RIT gave up too many shots again: 31. Only once have they given up below 30 this season. Lots of odd-man rushes for AIC, fortunately a lot of them were negated by an offsides.

The correction is that it is not TOTALLY the defense's fault. As Chris said, they are giving up over 30 shots on goal per game. We don't really know what we have in MacLean - all we have seen is the game against Ottawa. Yes he looked good in that game, but so did everyone else and look at where the team is now. If MacLean gets this kind of defense, there is a good chance that he gives up as many goals as Watson and Ruby have. Without improvement in the defence, I don't know if it matter much who the goalie is.

The only reason to rejoice that is that it keeps them closer to the pack. But unless RIT gets everything working together, that won't matter.

That's because this team always starts off slow, and it's getting annoying. Can't we start off well for once and maintain that momentum, instead of having to claw our way back into it?

That said, I'm hardly pushing the panic button. (Not 'til after tonight's game!)
