So to refresh.... "upset" is OK, holier-than-thou attitudes is OK, but overreaction is bad.
Thanks for the clarification on the fan etiquette.
Overreacting would include putting words in people’s mouth; ironically you accused Ed of having your own attitude. Remember MattS you were the one saying what a horrible thing RIT’s out of conference record was in 2010. After the 2010 regional in Albany an RIT player’s father specifically gave me a message for what you can do with your opinion on the out of conference record. Unfortunately USCHO board rules will not allow me to deliver it.
I think the main frustration from people on our side of the aisle, is that it include some people who have watched a lot of hockey over the years, especially college and RIT hockey. They are fairly open with their opinions, heck I remember one year in D-III Learchie actually called out RIT as being over rated in an early season article. If they think it is time to hit a panic button, they will say so.
Ed, this is splitting hairs with you, but I do disagree with you slightly. How you said it is how it should be, but today, fans act more like the root of the word, fanatics. Fanatics have always scared me too, because they only see things from the view of what they want. Hence what we have now, a bunch of people so fanatical about RIT not just winning a national championship but becoming a college hockey dynasty that they want it all now and can’t even see how spoiled we all have been by the early success of the program.
I don’t know what you call me by today’s standards. Anyone who knows me knows I bleed Orange during hockey season and Cardinal Red come baseball season. However I come to realize something in sports you win some and you lose some. If you are lucky you win a lot more. Yes there are times I get frustrated with RIT, I remember making a fool out of myself being mad about tying Wentworth in Boston one year. I and a lot of folks you disagree with were very bitterly disappoint with a group of RIT seniors and was actually glad when they lost their last game every to Elmira.
However, we recognize what these coaches and players are, human. Like us at work, they make mistakes and sometimes have bad days; difference is we don’t have bad days in front of thousands or people especially when we were young and dumb college kids. So maybe sometimes we go too easy on the players.
You know I have endured Buffalo’s 4 straight super bowl losses. I was actually at Game 6’s No Goal against Dallas in 1999. However I also realize that I am extremely luck, I have seen my Cardinals win 3 World Series in my life time. I have seen my Football team go to 4 Super Bowls in a row. I have seen a good buddy of mine win a National Championship. I have seen RIT shock the college world and go to the Frozen Four. Living in Buffalo sports world makes me realize how lucky I am to see all that.
I still expect a hard work ethic and I continue to expect great things from this RIT program. But I appreciate and respect the blood, sweat, and tears these players and coaches give. I will defend them from any criticism that I feel is unfair. Like family, because you see a lot of us our appreciated by the players, coaches, administrators, and family member of the fore mention and I for one have been given more than I deserve in return. Not sure if my approach would work for you, but it has worked very well for me. For the rest read the first line in my signature.
