I'd be willing to have a terrible basketball team if it meant a greatly improved hockey team.

The basketball team would have a LOT more exposure than hockey. If that team is consistantly terrible at the DI level, I think it would do more harm than good.

I highly doubt it. Practically nobody in Upstate NY gives $.02 about any DI bouncyball besides Syracuse.

I think a D-I basketball program would have significant exposure in Rochester media, but not beyond here. It would not have the wide appeal SU has across the state -- witness the D-I programs at St. Bonaventure, Colgate, Canisius, Niagara, Siena, Cornell, etc. But I think you are right that given the focus of local sports coverage it would tend to have an edge in coverage, but not to the point that it would eclipse hockey. This is a big hockey town, after all.

RIT has focused on excellence in athletics. I have no doubt in talking with the people at RIT who would be part of the decision that any move would be done the right way or not at all. RIT's commitment to men's hockey thus far should confirm that, despite those who feel it is on the verge of failure.

However, let's not forget that other than women's hockey, which could move up without other sports making the move, that this is essentially an eight-year process to get there: first making a move to D-II across the board and then to D-I.

Another question is this: can RIT afford to compete and be competitive in 24 sports at the D-II or D-I level?

At what cost do you move to D1? Is the juice worth the squeeze?

There has to be additional cost associated with the move, fielding the teams, the facilities, travel etc. Tuition is rising every year as it is and there's going to come a time when that won't be enough to cover cost and cuts will have to be made. I'm pretty sure they will come from the athletic department.

Better to have a D1 Women's and Men's hockey team and leave the others in DIII to help keep cost down.

Regarding the Catamount Cup:

There will be 5 of us in Section 2, Row 2 for both days.

I think it certainly would garner a LOT more attention of the local media. I think it would move hockey back a little bit more in the sports page. Let's face it, the media is dying for a MAJOR sport to go DI, and to them, basketball - even a bad team - will trump hockey.

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

I'm flying to Colorado with a couple other alumni for the Air Force series, and we were thinking of hitting up the Canucks/Avs game Saturday afternoon. There's a family deal for 4 tickets + food for $100 (lower bowl for $10 more/person), but there are only 3 of us. Is there anyone in the area/going to the AFA games that'd be interested in going?

If we don't sweep AIC this weekend, then yes, I will be upset with our team's performance.

As you should be......

Up until now, I've taken the lossses with a grain of salt and OOC games dont' mean much for AHA teams (other than pride) but there comes a time when a team has to define itself and now is that time.

WHAT?!?!?!?! Are you not a true RIT hockey fan??? You should have learned by now that a true fan cannot question if the team loses nor should you ever be upset by a loss!!! ;)

True fans can be upset. But true fans do not over-react.

True fans can be upset. But true fans do not over-react.

So to refresh.... "upset" is OK, holier-than-thou attitudes is OK, but overreaction is bad.

Thanks for the clarification on the fan etiquette.

I'd say there was quite a few more people overreacting than not... and it was kind of funny to watch.

Of course there was. It was passionate fans do. Get too high over a win and too low over a loss. The debate over how a team is playing is fun, but what I would call, and I could be wrong, the personal put downs are not.

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

Not for nothing, this is a much improved AIC team than in years past. While they have had some issues on offense as well, they have improved on defense to the tune of nearly a goal per game - and that's after giving up 15 last weekend to Air Force. When you consider RIT's struggles to score goals so far this season, don't be surprised if these are a pair of low scoring games.

I think there is a high likelihood of a split this weekend unless the beat down delivered by Air Force was not a one off event. I picked an RIT sweep in the pick em but I am a homer :)

Even with AIC's much improved defense, it's hard to imagine Madolora letting in more than we manage to get against AIC. I think our offense is slowly getting going..and playing at home is of course a huge bonus.
