Volkening is just a big oaf of a goalie with oversized pads, he takes a lot of net up but DeMichel is definitely more talented and can make that flashy big save when needed. .

Yet the "oaf" has won three AHA championship games and one game in the NCAAs. DeMichel's been there four years. How many conference championship games has he even played in?
The numbers are pretty even (.917 sv % to .914, 4 SO to 3) and other posters have pointed out that
1) Volkening saved the first RIT "goal."
2) It would have been 6-2 without him.

RIT definitely has a stronger team right now, but that doesn't make Volkening inept. And, if you like "flashy" saves, try this one on for size:

I would play Demike again tonight. He looked the most "on" that he has all season.

I think this is RIT's best defensive team of all the DI teams - and that bodes well come playoff time.

I will breathe a huge sigh of relief when they can hold an opponent to under 4 goals in the playoffs. It's unacceptable that RIT hasn't been able to do that in 7 D1 playoff games.

You are completely right. This year's team has the D and the goaltending to succeed in a single elimination scenario.

You have got to play DeMike tonight - he needs to stay in the playoff-style groove. I'd be shocked to see anyone else in goal tonight. Next weekend is potentially meaningless against Canisius, followed by a weekend off. Keeping DeMike focused and up to speed could be tough over the next few weeks.

Volkening is a good goalie - and he does look over-sized in the net.

Whoever argues that refs never give make-up calls needs to watch RIT's first goal and then the two penalties on RIT immediately after.

RIT dominated the third period after making some adjustments on their breakouts during the second intermission. Air Force is very quick to loose pucks - something I usually give RIT credit for. AF had a great forecheck going through much of the game. I don't expect AF to tire out like many other teams do on Saturday.

It should be another good game tonight.

DeMike is about 0.6 GAA better than the best goalies for RIT than any other year in the DI era. I think that is both in part to his improvement AND a strong defensive group and I think is suited well for single elimination unlke previous years.

Did anyone record the Time Warner broadcast of Saturday's Air Force game, and might be able to make me a copy on some sort of media (doesn't matter if it's a DVD or even just a VHS tape)? I took a friend and his boys to the game, and I think the boys were shown on TV during one of the stoppages. I didn't think to set my DVR for the game since I was going to be there, and now I'm kicking myself. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out.

No one's trying to argue that DeMike was better that Volkening the last three years. =) But it sure looks like Volkening isn't the wall he was previously, and DeMike has improved a lot this year over previous years.

had we won some OOC games, it would probably happen but I don't think our SOS (strength of schedule) would help us be ranked, especially since we lost all of our OOC games. In the next couple of years we are playing teams like U. of Wisc-Madison. If we schedule stronger teams and play them tough, chances are we might be ranked especially if we pull out a win/upset.

If we play teams like Boston U, Boston College, Vermont, (good teams on the east coast to keep travel easy) it would improve our SOS.

RIT may gain a few more votes, but I would not count on it. A possibility would be for RIT to be in the INCH power ratings. INCH generally has been more kind to RIT in terms of ratings.

Very, very true! I personally think with good transportation to students and good local media coverage, we can SELLOUT the BCA in the AHA FINAL. 7,000 plus against Colgate... I think I can and will happen. This year is our year!(Hopefully every other year also)
