Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2009-2010 <<<<< Rockin' Part 2 - The Playoffs

I like your thoughts! I especially like the idea that students design the arena. I would like to steer away from a second upperdeck just because it makes the arena not so fan friendly but have massive student/corner crew section.

[stupid comment hat]
Would it be possible (feasible?) to turn the field house into a temporary hockey rink? Lots of seats and lots of standing room. Might be neat if they end up deciding to tear down and replace or modify the ritter. Would keep games on campus which I think is important...especially in the AHA :)

no, this won't be possible nor feasible.. since we do track in there during the winter and there are sand pits underneath for track (long jump, etc).. also it costs money to turn over the building from hockey to something else, so its not cost effective. As for tearing down the ritter, not gonna happen.. gonna use that for either practice for the hockey teams or for public use year round as well as possibly bring back IM hockey. In addition, it would affect the main reason for having the fieldhouse which is more space for recreational activities, i.e. intramurals..the only viable option is building a new arena

^The article is not very informitive but it brings much hope to the Rochester community for RIT HOCKEY.

hmmm I actually never imagined this to happen this year. The Rochester-Western New York media and even national media has run with the RIT HOCKEY story!

Here is why I think RIT schould play the BCA all next year... RIT is huge right now, playing in the RITTER will kill the spark. 2100 fans... thousands of fans will be turned away which would be a momentum killer. In the BCA we do not have to worry. We just have to ensure that RIT students have a shuttle while they are building a new Arena on the RIT campus!

We have a bit of a problem at the ritter. Its going to be impossible to get tickets next year... RIT needs to be able to welcome every fan! We need to run with this sucess!

Any thoughts on the size of this

"I've seen the demand now, and our current space has out-stripped what we can provide for our fans," Spiotti said. "We have some inadequate spots in our arena, not only from a capacity standpoint but from all the services areas; restrooms, parking, locker rooms, all the support areas you need to run a first-class operation."

I love the idea of making RIT Rochester's team and not just the schools team. This is how schools like DU w/ 5,000 undergrads can have a 6,000 seat arena. However I don't think playing every game at the BCA would be a good Idea.

Earlier this year, we got props on national TV saying how the ritter had the best atmosphere in college hockey. Now when we move to the BCA for the playoffs and brick city, the atmosphere is good. but its not the intimate in your face blow the roof of this place kind of atmosphere that the ritter has. So lets show off why its the best.

Another thing to take into consideration. a majority of the games did not sell out due to various factors. But until every game sells out and it is actually impossible to get tickets. I don't see any reason to move. *until the new arena gets here :D * Now tickets may become harder to get, and you may not be able to walk up and grab a pair 5 minutes before game time. But there will still be ways to get tickets.

Ill throw my 2 cents into the rink discussion: I would like it on campus *sry city folks, its not that much of a drive :p * 4k seating, sure y not throw on some boxes for the big wigs, and big jumbotrons. ooh and please have it done so i can see them play in it before i graduate. thanks :D

you do make a valid point, especially some games may not sell out (i.e. games during break).. with the change in calendar from quarter to semester in 2013, it may cause potential problems also. you are correct that the feel in the BCA is not quite what it is to the ritter but certain games may make more sense in the bca than the ritter.. as for it being done before you graduate, wishful thinking..might be 5 years before they break ground depending on the speed of things, and if we can get a huge petition going and put pressure on the admin.

New Rink Essential Elements:
- On campus
- Free parking
- 4 to 5 thousand capacity with future expansion in mind
- Full size ice
- Better sound system so that volume does not have to be so loud
- Start it soon!

Playing off campus would absolutely kill the spark! Going to the BCA once in awhile for special occasions can work. If you played every game off campus, it would be a program killer.

People do not like to go downtown! There is nothing worthwhile there at night except the Dinosaur which is therefore too crowded. People do not like to pay for parking. The bulk of the games MUST remain on campus.

Having less supply (capacity) than demand (fans) does not diminish the demand! Yes some fans will be disappointed, but there are ways to handle the ticket sales so that single game tickets will be available.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2009-2010 <<<<< Rockin' Part 2 - The Playoffs

we could have a 1st rated LEED certified hockey arena..

Like all the arena thoughts. My wish is 4K seats (nice seats) on campus with a ring of SRO for people who just want to stand or to bump it up to 5K or so for big games.

On the LEED thing, I'm not sure that's possible since the ice requires a whole lot of energy. At least at the highest LEED levels, a certain amount of the energy has to be sustainable and produced onsite. We could cover the roof with solar panels with a good grant to do so, etc. Anyway, it would be awesome (not too mention creative and innovative) if a high-level LEED certified arena could be built on campus (maybe partially, or mainly underground to reduce heating/cooling costs with some of them swank geo-thermal heat pumps.

But I digress ... can't wait for Thursday ... love all the coverage ... GO TIGERS!!!!!!

I do agree on the killing the spark if all games are downtown. I would be for big named schools that are non conference be all downtown, also Air Force games downtown to try to get the whole city involved.

I must disagree on the downtown part. Downtown thrives at night with the young croud.

Hah! Already been done, and in DIII no less! The one big difference between Norwich's Kreitzberg Arena and Bowdoin's Sidney J. Watson Arena:

The Sidney J. Watson is LEED certified.

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2009-2010 <<<<< Rockin' Part 2 - The Playoffs

IMHO, I think Quinnipiac’s new arena is a good model of what we should be shooting for.

Arena Fit for Quinnipiac’s Ambition

I like it! Although I think if they added a couple more rows that would be nice. I think 3,500 is a good number. After this season I think we could probably get around 75% of that on a regular basis and sell out for big games. Yeah I know we don't sell out all the time as it is but I think if athletics did a little more advertising we'd have no making that fairly full...plus we gotta leave room for some growth.

I like it too! My main stipulation for a new arena is that it needs to be designed so you feel like the fans are right on top of you. I've been banging the drum on a design similar to Northeastern's Matthews Arena, but I like Quinni's too.

If we're supposed to be a tough arena to play in, it needs to stay that way.

I think a lot of people don't come because of the arena situation. I'm sure families have come, shown up 20 minutes early, been forced to stand behind people for 2.5 hours, and decided not to return. Remember, the Ritter really seats 1,600 or so with the rest being SRO. I often skip Friday games because by the time I get home and get out again, it'll be 6:50, and I'll either have to stare at the back of someone's head or pay extra to sit in a corner. I think you'll see a lot of people come out of the woodwork with an arena with some true reserved seatback seats.

On another note, I wore my RIT final four shirt yesterday, and I had three people I didn't know make comments to me about RIT and their run (in a restaurant and two different stores in Penfield/Webster -- not exactly near RIT). Over the past ten years or so of wearing RIT hockey shirts, I've received zero comments from people when I wasn't at RIT. So, that gives you an idea of the importance of this run in raising their profile locally.

I think with a bigger arena we could easily outdraw the Amerks.

I hope the corner crew is working on an answer to the, "When you say Wisconsin, you said it all" cheer/song. I'm thinking singing, "I love New York", would be fun.

Hah! Notice I said "high level" LEED ... Perhaps I should have been more explicit, but I meant Platinum (or at least Gold). I couldn't find a level mentioned for the Bowdoin arena, so I assume it's the lowest. Cool nonetheless, but I think RIT has stated that no building would be built on campus that doesn't meet those minimum requirements. If I'm not mistaken, the new USC at RIT is the only LEED-Platinum building on a college campus (or at least was the first) ... that's the kind of stuff I was talking about.

Regardless, good for Bowdoin ... we'll have to shoot for the first LEED-Platinum ice arena (which, as I said, might not be feasible).

You mean outdraw what the Amerks have drawn the last few years, or what they should be drawing with a good team? (But I think even the first number is going to be hard to match; they're averaging 4,166 this year.)

Hey, you never know! :p I think if we continue doing as well as we have been in recent years we could get a ton of students interested as well as the local community.

Poll: Who do you want to win the National Championship?

I'm kinda interested to see how many people make the trip to Detroit. I know we sold all 600 tickets to 132...wonder how many bought tickets in other sections. It would be pretty cool if we had around 1000 fans there. I suspect we'll have some fans from other teams cheering for us as well.

Las Vegas Hilton Odds to win NCAA Frozen Final:

Miami of Ohio Redhawks 7-2.
Wisconsin Badgers 5-1.
Boston College Eagles 6-1.
RIT Tigers 100-1.

...has potential to make some Tiger fan happy in more ways than one.

If it makes anyone feel any better we already overcame some pretty tough odds...
Denver Pioneers 4-1.
New Hampshire Wildcats 30-1.
