Hudson threw an elbow? I'm SHOCKED! SHOCKED I say!  :D

Honestly though, it wasn't much of one. I was there, saw the replay and just watched the Youtube clip and still can't see where there was any significant contact with the elbow. I see where the elbow came up, but it didn't come up very far before the opposing player flung himself down to the ice like he was just shot in the face. But whatever... the fight was quite enjoyable :D

Don't kill me, but... Unusual thought... What if Ringwald signs with Rochester / Florida next season and Hudson is still there? Can anyone say ironic defensive pairing?

Its really the best fit and puts us in direct competition with similar schools (Clarkson, RPI, etc)

Although there are similarities (Clarkson, RPI, and RIT are all primarily known as Technological Institutes in Upstate New York), RIT is a rapidly growing large comprehensive university that is nationally ranked in many more diverse programs than either of its neighbors in Troy or Canton. RIT's enrollment is nearly twice that of RPI and Clarkson put together. That being said, the focus on academics for athletes at all three schools is definitely a common thread, and at least in terms of the Engineering programs they are all top-notch.

Along the same lines I've often wondered why UB doesn't have a D1 hockey program?

Football...
Title IX...
(to a much lesser extent) competition from the Sabres...

Remember UB used to have a D3 team. But when the school started planning to move its athletic program up to D1, they dropped hockey (it's now a club team which plays at the Amherst Pepsi Center right across the street from the Amherst campus and all the other athletic facilities).

You mean they play in Canisus's home rink? How awkward!

No I don't that's why I asked ;)

How long ago was that? I've been following RIT and D-III since 1986 and don't remember them. If they've been in existence since then they must not have been much to write home about (of course, I am getting older, too). What conference did they play in?

I think 1986-87 was their last season and they played in the ECAC West.

That sounds about right. They were also in the SUNYAC, though back then like you said, all the SUNYAC teams also played in the ECAC West.

And their home ice at the time was Sabreland.

OK, I know this was discussed a couple years ago when SU announced their intentions of fielding a D-I Women's hockey team and all the rumors about a potential Men's team came up, but...
IMHO, There is no way SU is going to start a D-I program in any sport and join what is in essence a "mid-major" conference (although I understand that term has no true meaning in this case, but you get the point). An athletic department like SU would only join D-I hockey if it were to join a major conference like Hockey East, CCHA, or possibly ECAC. I doubt the AHA would even be a consideration for them unless it were to be used as a planned 2 to 4 year interim step to a major conference, which wouldn't be of much value to the AHA or its other members unless they were charged a higher membership fee for being a temporary member (which I imagine would be highly unlikely).

I guess the question Niagara fans are asking is Syracuse prestigious enough to join the ECAC :D

The Pepsi Center is the "secondary home" of the Ice Griffs. They have two home rinks, and neither one is theirs.

Speak of which when I drove by the Pepsi Center the other day I noticed the Pepsi logos had all been removed, not sure if Pepsi no longer has the rights or if they are just replacing the logos...

Indeed -- it's no coincidence that RIT is joining the Liberty League in 2011, which is the very league that St. Lawrence, Clarkson, Union, and RPI are in. It could be seen as a first step toward getting those LL schools to vote us into ECAC Hockey. The better known we are, the more likely they are to want us in there.

It is no longer the Pepsi Center

A Brief History of UB Hockey can be found here http://www.ubhockey.com/info/index.php

I honestly do not remember them every having a Varsity Hockey team. I would say a UB Hockey team would be very unlikley and given the state of UB Athletics I would have trouble believing it would be very good at all...

The problem is that is a D-III League, I really do not want to go into the ECAC without scholarships which would require all sports to go D-I

Bah. Just because Union struggles without scholarships doesn't mean it's a foregone conclusion. I know RIT isn't the Ivy League, but the Ivies still illustrate a model that would work.

Union does not offer scholarships (they are in the same boat as you are) and both Colgate and SLU just recently bumped their numbers up to the full allotment of 18 full rides. RIT would have a bit of a learning curve, but I could see them as a team that competes year in and year out for the Cleary Cup. The hardest part would be finding a travel partner for the Tigers. Of course, this whole discussion is a moot point without drastic realignment throughout the entire landscape of D-I hockey.

I hate Union as much as the next guy, but they haven't exactly struggled. They've gotten byes two of the past three seasons, were undefeated in ECAC play until nearly the end of January, and (finally) made it to Albany this past season. Their coach won COTY in the conference and they are definitely on the upswing with two young, good goalies.
