RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Only 16 schools have capacity over 6000 for their arenas - so I think that would be plenty big.

For those who think that a 6000 seat arena will draw top tier teams - don't bank on it, especially when the Big Ten Hockey Conference is formed unless RIT is invited to a bigger league.

Let's throw some more numbers out there. Last year, only 6 teams averaged more than 6,000, and 16 averaged more than 4,000. RIT, even with the Blue Cross game, only averaged 2,071. 4,500 seats is plenty. For now.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I'll predict that RIT's new arena will seat between 4268 - 5000. Lynah holds 4267 ... and I don't think Pres. Destler will let it come in smaller than their number.;)

Personally, I think 4500 seats with 500+ of standing room would work. I think the ring of standing room around Ritter is a nice feature and if something similar can be worked in, that would be cool. Cheel pulls that off (but with only 3000 seats) and they also have seats without arms that are kind of the best of both worlds between seats and bleachers.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Dr. Destler said in his radio interview that a combination of some areas with individual seats and some bleacher-type seating for some sections (such as one very important corner) were likely to be part of the plan.

Cornell could use more seats in Lynah. Many students are shut out of games.

What's critical is not the number of seats but the atmosphere. If a 6,000-seat arena with 4,000 people in it can be loud through its design, then that would be fine. A 4,000 seat arena that's full but dead because of the design and acoustics would be undesirable.

World Arena in Colorado Springs holds 7,750. Because of the design of the place, it's loud and exciting even when well below capacity. Meanwhile other arenas seem dead when full. RIT has placed a priority on how the place feels and sounds.

That ain't going to happen as they just expanded Lynah. BTW lotss of people are shut out of games at Cornell, not just students. I think it part of the fun that makes the atmoshpere that much better there than most places. Once someone finally get tickets they are so excited that it doesn't matter who Cornell is playing, or how good the game is, the fans are still into it. It's almost like you can't afford not to be because who knows when you might get to see a game again.

Students wait in line for days to get season tickets (somewhat like Duke for BB). For non-student secitons...well that is quite a wait too. I was on the wait list for almost 7 years to get my Cornell season tickets. I understand most places that kind of wait wouldn't fly, but for Ithaca it does.

RIT has placed a priority on how the place feels and sounds.

I really hope this is true. But I am always skeptical that $$$ with be the first priority and everything else second.

Yeah, there's not much else to do in Ithaca in January. =) Rochester is a different story.

RIT has never skimped when it comes to hockey facilities. The improvements from 2000, the new scoreboard, the new broadcast booth, and the HD camera setups are a testament to that.

Maybe that's exciting to you, but that's downright depressing to me.

I want to see all the RIT hockey I can. The team should want all the support it can get. Waiting seven years for season tickets? Better be planning on getting a Ph.D so you can do it before you move away...

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I really wish we could stop taking dumb penalties... especially against teams as good on the PP as Niagara.

So Niagara is the Purple Eagles... which is kinda funny... cuz they wear purple. Even better, their official transportation company is Rainbow Transportation. I mean come on! That's enough to make any 11 year old giggle.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

The defense was absolutely TERRIBLE all night. The third and fourth goals were scored by completely lacksidasical turnovers. Inexcusable turnovers at any level.

This game left me with some serious buyer's remorse (B2). That was the worst I've ever seen them play.

They really didn't try to get to the loose pucks especially when Niagara pitched it down the ice on the penalty kill. RIT got caught a couple of times by getting beat to the puck.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Game thoughts:

-Jan was the only reason we stood a chance.
-Niagara was all over the Tigers the whole night and did not let up. Wherever a Tiger was, there was a NU player ready to hit him and steal the puck.
-Niagara was physically superior and RIT could not compete with that.
-The Tigers had no jump and were not getting to the puck in open space. I can't even count the number of times I saw Jeff Smith see a puck and then hesitate to go to it. Bad game for him and a lot of our players.
-Only two players that were any good tonight were Knowles and Colavecchia.
-Refereeing was atrocious, to add insult to injury. It was far from the reason we lost, but it didn't help matters any.
-Passing was terrible. Nothing was connecting.

Props to NU. They played a great game and never gave us a chance. And props to the refs for keeping it out of reach. Weak.

That would partly require referees that are consistant and competant - which the AHA has none of.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

IMHO, Niagara and Robert Morris are the best two teams, top to bottom in the conference, after watching both teams play. Did they actually go to 11 scholarships because they play like they still have 18.

I thought the scholie limit was 12 now, though maybe that is next year. In any event, I did ask at Niagara if we were down to the AHA limit and was told that we were.

Personally, I think maybe the Purple uniforms give us a recruiting advantage ... just so much more attractive than Halloween colors. :D:D Bing-o!
