RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

The Pittsburgh alumni chapter has reception & tickets available for Dec. 30. Good price, too. Does anyone know of anything happening from up here on our end in Rochy by way of an RIT section, or should we go ahead and pounce on the P'burgh deal?

Powers &8^]

They casually announced at the game on Saturday that the fieldhouse will have 100 tickets for sale on Wednesday. They're $20 as well. I'm going to call the box office on Monday and find out if they're in the same section as the alumni section, if we can order over the phone and if students can buy more than one(I'm an alumn going with a friend who's a student). I'll let you know what I find out. :)

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Did you see what happened to Haltigin on Friday?

Powers &8^]

Yeah that was a pretty brutal boarding. Hard to imagine it wasn't a 5 minute major...guy was looking at nothing but Haltigan's numbers from a long way away.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I just pray that they do this new arena right. It better be cozy like the Ritter is now, because that's the atmosphere that makes playing here so awesome.

If it's anything less than a 21st century iteration of this arena then I'm not sure I'll be pleased.

I love this Arena. Everyone would be right on the ice!! Just that is ugly and old! But 6,000 with an upper deck would be awesome! We need fans ontop of the ice!

I e-mailed Dr. Cooper about this over the weekend. She said it was "on her list" of things to consider in the new plans, and had talked about it in her interview with Sportszone. I asked her if they could add proximity to the ice surface on the website where people rate which features are important to them.

I love Matthews arena. The major gripe I have though is that the balcony is extended so close to the ice (which is great for atmosphere). Unless you're in the 1st row of the balcony you can't see a **** thing... But man I love watching a game in that barn.

if our arena turns out like matthews, i'd be thrilled, they just need to make the 2nd deck at an angle so even the 1st row has a good view unlike what you noted at matthews.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

The one time I was at Matthews I was not impressed. It just didn't have a good feel to it. I felt like the lower section (where I was sitting) was too flat and the back rows were too far from the ice. Plus the ceiling is way too high.

I think the seating needs to be as steep as possible and not too many rows deep. That is what give the feel of being on top of the ice. A low ceiling helps with that too. Makes the crowd louder and gives it that cozy feeling.

I just hope that whatever the new arena is like that it has none, or probably more realistically, as few luxury boxes as possible!! Nothing, and I mean nothing, kills an atmosphere more than a bunch of luxury boxes with corporate people who could care less about the hockey. It's supposed to be college hockey not pro hockey. First and foremost it should be about the players and fans not the $$ that can be made. Yeah, I know I am probably dreaming but....

so im guessing maybe rit should enlist some of our engineering students and design students to get our arena to be just right. As for the suites, we don't need corporate suites, but rather party suites, and maybe a vip spot for those who are season tix holders. I actually just voted on the powerplay website and think having a vip club for season tix holders would be a nice addition to create value for those who shell out money for season tix.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Here's what I've found out about Pittsburgh tickets:
-$20 is the price for everyone
-you have to order in person
-there isn't a limit on # of tickets you can buy

I still don't know if the alumni tickets and these are in the same section, but someone in the alumni office is looking into it for me.

Don't forget, guys, Steve Schultz is on the arena committee. =) He'll make sure the place doesn't lose the atmosphere.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

i totally agree with all the comments on being close to the ice and maintaining that small rink ritter feel. here a few other things, similar and not, that i would like to see at a new rink:
- i really want to keep the bench / general admission seating. don't think that will happen, but i can wish.
- i want seats right on the glass all the way around the rink, similar to ritter. i don't want the walkway around the glass that rpi has or the wasted side of the rink that niagara has.
- we are a tech school, might as well have some tech toys - a nice video display or two, cameras and setups for hd quality tv/streaming feeds, wifi, and whatever else you guys can cook up. replays of goals would be cool, as would the ability to stream video of the game. also, having captioned video would be nice for the deaf community.
- team colors and team history - orange and brown themed walls/seats/etc, photos/jerseys/banners from old teams
- also, as a small detail, i like having the team benches on opposite sides. it is something i got used to at ritter but it is not a standard for all the rinks i have been to.

So, is it a bad omen that the kick-off donation to the new arena was made by the Grim Reaper? :P :)
... I know, I'm old.

Well we all saw the inside of this arena back in april. I enjoyed playing on the ice surface in that old barn, and based on the images from the renovation, it looks like the balcony view would be much better than Matthews.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

A few more thoughts:

Dartmouth's Thompson Arena: http://www.dartmouthsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=11600&ATCLID=590355

Michigan Tech's MacInnes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Macinnes.JPG

UMD's old DECC http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/se...&issueid_=9&storyid=171&year_=2008&imagenum=1

Problems become apparent here when we look at cool old barns like these. They don't have the features that would make RIT more attractive than Blue Cross for events. So I guess that becomes a question. Is one of the goals here to take events away from Blue Cross? Is the external business venture more important to RIT than building a new barn with an old-school feel?

I agree with this. It's a lot easier to coordinate going to games with friends if you don't have to worry about buying tickets together. I wouldn't be opposed to partial reserved seating though.

I think we'll almost certainly see some of each.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Tigers pick up another recruit, this time not from the BCHL but the Streetsville Derbies of the OJHL.

Stuart Brownell - D - 6'4" 185lbs - DOB 5/9/1992

2010/2011 Streetsville games: 25 goals:4 assists:11 Pts:15 PIM:42
2009/2010 Streetsville games: 48 goals:2 assists:14 Pts:16 PIM:66

In 2009/2010 he was a +13. This year, that's a stat the OJHL isn't tracking.

Given his age, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up playing another year or 2 of Juniors before coming to Rochester.
