While I still have a kneejerk negative reaction to the word "redistribution", I find myself becoming more and more liberal* and want this to happen somehow. Do you remember an example of a country and year where such a thing happened?

*Soon I hope to reach that blissful state where I know exactly what's best for everyone else and the only problem is explaining it to them in simple enough terms to be understood.

I'd need a refresher on all the details.

One example is from a country in Central America, a few oligarchs owned all the land. They implemented a plan by which the oligarchs were allowed to keep a minority portion of their landholding while the rest of the land was divided up into parcels and ownership transferred more broadly to more people. The economy did much better afterward.

Another example is England under Henry VIII. The Catholic Church had owned a lot of wealth before he split with them; after the split, much of that wealth was spread around more generally, though I don't remember about who or how. Many historians view this event as the seminal moment that led England to the Industrial Revolution well before most other countries.

The estate tax in the US also has worked quite well in redistributing wealth, in that many super-wealthy people bequeathed their estates to foundations: Carnegie Foundation, Ford Foundation, Gates Foundation (he actually transferred billions while still alive), etc. etc. etc.

Did these people actually state that they placed their estates into foundations as a matter of avoiding the excise tax or is that your assumption? Someone like Gates, he's doing this as a way to make the world better, which you can see by his personal actions during life. To ascribe those motivations to a tax avoidance scheme is specious reasoning, IMO.

They're not mutually exclusive. He's making the world better because his foundation can spend the money more wisely than the United States can and sooner. Tax avoidance "plan" sounds better than "scheme."

Was there an estate tax when Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford (and Rockefeller) started their foundations?

The estate tax, as we know it now, came into being in 1916. The same idea was tried a couple times during the 19th century, but were quickly repealed.

Sometime a guy is just an a-hole. One event may or may not be related to another, in terms of what type of person he is. Meaning, he may very well have been in the right for the previous case, and totally in the wrong in this case.

Or he's a homicidal lunatic, he murdered someone, he got away with it, and as long as he's above ground he'll just keep on keepin' on.

I completely agree. I'm just curious if he was this big of an a-hole before the threats. Or if he has gone off the deep end since.

Hogwash. He was a choir boy before. Trayvon Martin and the liberal police force, prosecution and media turned him into a psychopath. Before this he helped little old ladies across the street and volunteered at the animal shelter to care for puppies and kittens.
