Also, I think you have to take into consideration the social climate of the times. Jackie Robinson and Jesse Owens. Imagine what they had to deal with once the game was over let alone what they had to deal with during competition. Ted Williams, took a break from playing ball to fight in a war.

That, too.

You almost have to go pre-1970 or so vs post-1970 just on social barriers.

Hard to compare, too. Ali compared to a "complete" athlete like a wrestler (not WWE stuff) is difficult. Or the age old "tackle a 250 lb guy that doesn't wanna be tackled" vs hit a round ball with a round stick debate.
Which is why I think it would make for interesting poll fodder.

Edit: also, where do you fit in someone like Babe Didrikson Zaharias?

Interesting pull there! Very nice, bbdl!

I have a couple ideas for the Worthless Offseason Polls, but I have to work on the PoTY this week, and get that set up.

It's either Pele or the boxer that the movie Cinderella Man was about or the diver that invented the triple lindy. game over. ;)

Funny. Pele is one that I thought of, but given bbdl's uh, limited view of sports.....;)

Ted Williams, took a break from playing ball to fight in a war.

Twice. He served in both WWII and Korea, costing him 5 years of the prime of his career. Take a good look at his numbers now and figure that in. You'd be looking at about 3700 hits, 700 HR, and about 2400 RBI.

And figure Babe Ruth did his damage over essentially 16 seasons, most times either loaded like a freight train, or hung over from doing the same. He spent the first 5 years of his career nearly exclusively as a pitcher. While the live ball era began in 1920, he also played the majority of his career before the biggest live-ball boom, the 1930's. Look at some of the RBI numbers of the 30's sometime. They make the steroid era look like a bunch of amateurs. But by the time the 1930 season began, Ruth was 35. If he was born 10 years later, all of his records would likely still be intact. We might be talking about 900 career homers, 2800 RBI and an 80 homer season somewhere in there.

And imagine how "limited" someone like Butkus or Deacon Jones would be with today's NFL rules........

Look at all of this conversation this has started, this is why it would be a great offseason poll. Imagine arguing Gretzky vs. Babe Ruth!

And people forget just how good of a pitcher Ruth was. He might very well have been a 300-game winner. He had 94 wins in his career, and he essentially stopped pitching at age 24.

Imagine Wayne Gretzky doing what he did, and spending the first 5 years of his career playing Norris Trophy-caliber defense before moving to center. Now you have Babe Ruth.

Just don't ruin the poll by including girls unless dishwashing is considered a sport. Just kidding :p

What are the odds this thread remains civil? ;)

Mario > Gretzky. Imagine him not battling that whole cancer thing.....

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge: Get the thread open so I can sit at the Happy Hockey Table

Good evening Lodge.

Very windy in 320ville right now.

Edit. A good friend of mine informed me in January that his father was diagnosed with cancer in December 2011. Just got a text from him. "Our main goal now is to keep dad comfortable with warmth, company and love." Crap. F u cancer. F u.

Indeed.
Up the arse, with a running chainsaw... sideways.

I have Ruth as #2 behind Ali in my personal list. With Gretzky and Jordan rounding out the top 4.

No Barry Bonds? How many athletes can claim that their head size doubled and nearly tripled in the twilight of their career? Think about it. I cannot name one athlete who has come close.
