Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 98: Favorite Alter Ego

Someone just filed their taxes! :D

I should have my refund by February 5th.

I'm actually jealous! I'm still waiting on getting my forms.
And, I file on paper, the old fashioned way. Then again, my taxes are usually pretty easy.

Mine are super easy also (1040EZ). My company uses a company that has them in PDF format online before the physical ones are mailed out. So I just download them and then e-file via TurboTax.

TurboTax is generally free for Federal and only like $14 for State.

It's been 17 years, but if you have information the NCAA should know about, contact the committee on infractions. The contact person is ksmartin@ncaa.org
Notice that smiley above the post? I was kidding. I was a sophomore in high school at the time, and like all MN high school boys, probably an unknowing target of Hammy's jock sniffing habits, and not worried about who was winning the NCAA if it wasn't the Gophers.

I'll be doing this soon, too. Just got the W2 today. I'll file the federal for free and wait for the state. No sense in paying for it. I can wait for the ~$150 I'll get back. And I think I know exactly what I'll use that refund for. :)

You know what makes me excited? This is the first year that I wasn't claimed as someone's dependent. Last year, my parents pulled the cheap shot and claimed me (the only assistance they provided was tuition while I student taught and help on my deposit for my new place after I left RC), and it took my return from over $300 to $28.

Our taxes are done end of July, early August. We always file an extension because Mrs. Gonzo is too busy doing the books for three different companies. Her own, her and her business partner, and a small ad agency she's done the books for over twenty years. She doesn't need the extra income that the ad agency gives her as much as when she took the job, but they have nice quarterly bonuses that keep her there.
It used to drive me crazy that we did the taxes so late in the year, but (yet again) she explained that we almost always owe a little bit and there's less pressure on our accountant that time of year so we get the proper attention from him.

It is official. I have just booked a flight and rental car on Priceline. There was a good package deal on Priceline this morning, ~$380 per person for a flight and car, but with the standard Priceline catch that you can't choose your flight times. CHA and I decided to wait to see about getting tickets to the game before booking the flight, then at about 10:30 the price of the package went up to $500. We decided that we should book before the price goes any higher, luckily I went through and searched the exact same thing again, just before buying, and the price showed up as the original $380. So I booked it right away at the lower price. :D :D :D

Now we need to find a hotel and get tickets to the game....any lodgers have Saints tickets on their hands?

You know its your choice to let someone else claim you right?

You're right about that, but while our kids were in college we made it clear that we had to file "real world" taxes, and were taking advantage of the little remaining time we could claim a dependent. If they did protest too much, we reminded them that since they were ready to take that step they could pay their own tuition as well.
My wife is quite serious about the cash flow, and the easiest way to pi** her off is eff with the $.
When oldest was nearing graduation at UW Madison, she struck the deal that if he maintained his 4.0 through his senior year, we'd cover the balance on his only loan. He finished 3.8 something, only because he got an incomplete on one of his easy Sr. classes. He did a real slide the last semester. She wouldn't budge. "I laid out the deal, and you didn't hold up your end. This is how the real world works. Get used to it." was her steadfast response to his plea for mercy.

Normally I have a great sense of humor, but not about this. I lived through it. My job was to cleanse the files, break state (nevermind NCAA) laws and carry the money. Granted, I didn't know what I was doing violated rules - I was told what to do and I did it. But try living with that on your conscience. Also, try to imagine that someone you really admired and respected turned out to have quite an interest in rewriting the rules as he saw fit. On top of that, imagine the gold star reference you were planning to use was tarnished - think the Portland Pirates wanted the bagman from UMaine around? And imagine that you received threats from faculty members and others after you had the temerity to tell the truth.

So, yeah...notsomuch with the sense of humor surrounding the whole investigation thing.

Hotel? Just hang out on the streets and drink until you pass out. :p For tickets, try StubHub. Personally, I'd go for the $40000 seats.

Well I can't argue with that...if her parents gave her more for school than what she benefits from claiming herself, it sucks but thats the way it is...

Stubhub is the biggest joke in tickets since Ticketmaster...they charge the seller a 15% fee if sold and the buyer another 10% on top of the list price plus a crazy shipping charge.

I've checked stubhub, but we'll see. They're usually overpriced. I found some better deals on ebay last night. I think I'll avoid craigslist for this one...:p
