Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

BU could say the same thing. Agganis is very nice, it has great amenities and real boxes, etc., but it has lost the vibe of Walter Brown. There were times when it would get so loud at Walter Brown, you couldn't even hear yourself think (low ceiling, loud fans). Agganis, even when it does get loud, doesn't even approach the same intensity as WBA. :(

The WBA was a unique experience and a funky building as well... alas, its one of those lost to time and the historical archives. The old buildings have quite the character to them whereas the newer facilities have that grand feel but it lacks the quirky color.

edit: i've always liked to call it "walter's bowling alley" because of that distinctly 70s feel in the rink potion of the building... i know nobody else calls it that but to me it fits.

I would say the same thing about old and new Mariucci. New Mariucci is alot "nicer" but old Mariucci was alot louder. Goldy had a perch that was above the ice. For some reason referees didn't like it when he would "accidently" drop one of his toys on the ice. ;)

If anyone is interested in seeing "Old Mariucci". Some great video and pictures if you snoop around the site.

I've probably said it before but thanks for showing me Walter Brown.

Of the college hockey arena I've been to Matthews and Hobey Baker where probably my favorites. I love old arenas.

Fenway and Wrigley are my two favorite baseball parks.

Yeah the videos on that website are cool.

To me Old Mariucci is like an old friend that you have so many great memories of/with. A couple of my favorites are "Get Chroske off the ice" and "Bluuuuuue"

I would guess I've now see about as many games in both arenas and I miss old Mariucci right up to right up to the point I walk into the new arena, I like have a seat instead of a bench. :) My favorite is still the taunting of Angelo (Angie) Somethinganother from U-Mi from the mid 70s and the abuse Medo took. :)

I vote for the birth of Roboshark.

You got to love old people who care more about being comfortable. I got to have a nice seat so I can sit on my hands. ;) :D

The best way to enjoy a Gopher hockey game is clearly to stand in the student section being loud with a bunch of friends. I miss those times. Hopefully everybody from the gang gets back together for a game or two in the student section one of these years. You're only young once but you have your whole life to be immature.

Borrowed from the Ferris thread:

Hammer and KC8NIY quoted in the Big Rapids Pioneer (Ferris State Hockey's main Newspaper) today:

The article was talking about Ferris Hockey's attendance numbers being up - http://www.pioneergroup.com/article...ts/local_sports/doc4b396a74dde7e838776027.txt but the Pioneer makes you pay to read the articles.

The quote though:

"Not all fans like the earlier start times. Although many internet message boards are often nothing more than a venue for anonymous venom, some, like the popular one on the website USCHO.com, can provide a glimpse into what die-hard hockey fans are thinking.
One poster sugested that earlier start times do more harm than good with younger families' schedules.
"You ever deal with a 7-year-old that hasn't had his dinner at 8:30 p.m.? And do you really want to get your kid dinner at a concession stand?" USCHO.com poster Hammer said. "I can think of a ... lot worse things for a family to do with their children than take them to a hockey game (or most sporting events, for that matter) where they're home by 9:30 to 10 p.m., which is roughly where you're at when you're looking at a 7 or 7:05 p.m. faceoff."
Another poster said the non-traditional start time turns off traditional fans.
"Many, many people view a Saturday evening hockey game as the culmination to the day," the poster KC8NIY said. "You do what you want during the day, then head out for some hockey for the evening festivities.""

Moretto.

Back when 6'-3" was HUGE for a college hockey player. I know Larry Thayer who played goal for the Gophs back then. He said Angie was the "best bad hockey player" he had seen. The guy was slow, slow, slow. But effective by standing in the slot and couldn't be moved.

I just got a call from the doctor's office. They have the results from my MRI and the tumor hasn't changed since last time. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

That's great. Can they get rid of the rest of it?

Well, that's good news!

Hammer - quick tax question. I made a donation to my church on 12/17 and it looks like they have not cashed the check. If they don't cash it before 12/31, can I still claim it?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

I would take the deduction. Keep a copy of the cancelled check for your own records, obviously. And if it doesn't clear by January, get on the phone with them ASAP, like the morning of February 1.

Oh, I'm sure they'll cash it next week. There's probably no one in the church office due to the holidays. I just wanted to make sure that I could claim it in 2009 if they hadn't cashed it prior to 12/31.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

You made the donation, and they had constructive receipt of the donation before the end of the year. I'd take it.

Yeah, there's 5% of the mass left (a little less than 1 cm) and I'll have one more surgery to remove it. As long as it's not growing, he's not in a hurry to open me back up, but he wants to kill it before it has a chance to grow back - which it will. Whatever is left, if anything, can be wiped out by the proton machine after surgery. I expect surgery to take place now in a couple years. I'm more worried about the recovery than the surgery...I really don't want to have to learn to walk again :p

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Priceless's hatred of the Vikings: Apparently he a little messed up being bothered by a team that can't ever win a championship

Priceless's hatred of the Gophers: Clearly a sign of jealousy

Priceless's love of politics: Yawn boring

Having Priceless around to talk and joke with: Priceless

I'm really glad to hear the news. :)
