We had also planned on "hooking up" this summer for a USCHO get together. However, most of the USCHO'ers on here chickened out and we had to cancel.
The only other time gmann and I hooked up (and that probably is a poor choice of words), Mrs. gmann and Mrs. Gonzo were there as well. We even validated that Mrs. gmann is better off not looking at the board.

The wife and I were planning to stay home for Thanksgiving this year and just invite folks to come visit us, but now the family is giving us some grief/guilt trips about not visiting. We just don't feel like making the 10 hour drive this year, plus we'll see everybody a month later for Christmas. *sigh* Any advice?

I like to start listening to Christmas music at this time of year. I have an extensive collection of Christmas and seasonal favorites in jazz arrangements. Every year I tell myself that on November 1st I'm going to start listening to Christmas music on my iPod when I go to the gym for my daily workout. I haven't been successful in the past in beginning on November 1st, but I'm proud to say that this year I made it. Started yesterday with Nat King Cole. Today, Ella Fitzgerald is on tap.

gmann - it looks like I'll be driving past you twice on Thursday. I get to go do a final on a project in EBF Nodak (aka Lisbon, ND) with our CEO. So we'll likely drive up in the AM, CEO will take the Director to lunch and I'll do the full inspection, then we'll drive back. About 9 hours driving for the two highest paid folks in the firm for about 2 hours of actual work.

Difficult, but perhaps explain that with financial constraints, it's just not possible for you to make 40 hours worth of driving in the span of 4 weeks (I assume that's 10 hours there and 10 hours back). It's hard to hear, but maybe when the large scale of time, gas, wear/tear on the car, is spelled out, it might be easier? Plus with traffic, who knows how much longer the trip would take?
This is only the second time ever that I won't be spending Thanksgiving at home with my family, but they seem to be understanding (so far)

The same thing happened to me through the years. My mom always insisted that we go to her house for all holidays. When I finally said "no" one year, she said, "Well, I guess that ends our tradition" and I responded "At some point we have to start our own traditions, and this is the first year". That was hard for her to argue with.
It was also a little easier to do once we had kids, but that shouldn't matter. We'd still go over to her or my in laws for occasional holidays. And everyone was always welcome when we were hosting too, so it wasn't like we shut them out or had hard feelings. We just wanted to get our own thing going.
Good Luck! That situation is awkward, to say the least.

Regarding traditions........Mrs. g has NEVER missed a Christmas with her family. However, this year will be different as we are going to celebrate with just us = start a new tradition. Her family doesn't know this yet and I am sure once they find out they are not going to be very accepting of it. Maybe I can conference them in.

When our kids were young we started/changed our tradition, best thing we ever did.
BTW, I bought two tickets for the MN-IL game Saturday (IL returned some of their allotment) and I noticed MN was also selling tix for one of the MN-BSU games.
