Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 88: What's in your stash?
Morning lodge.
Got up early for no apparent reason and wasn't even tired. This is a nice way to start a Monday. Since I got to work 45 minutes early, hopefully I can get out of here a little early too.
Why the hell does a combine need a GPS? Is the cornfield located in the middle of the Amazon?
Start at edge of cornfield. Go straight. When you hit the end, turn around and continue down the line. Continue until there is no more cornfield.
I'm just throwing out the edge of a field as an example of an area that would have a low yield, there can be lots of different little areas out on the field that can have higher or lower yeilds, and when you plot that all out on a map, then the farmer will know what parts of this field will need more care, like having more fertilizer put there later on.
mrg is basically right. The combine is able to determine yield and moisture in real time as you drive across the field, as this is determined, it fills in a map of the field on a screen in the cab with a color scale, showing the yield. By looking at this we are able to tell where our low yields are and therefore where to focus our attention.
The GPS is also in the planting tractor and sprayer, so we create maps for each operation, at the end of the season we have a layer for everything we did to the field that season. In the sprayer and planting tractor we also have auto-steer to go with the GPS, so the tractor will essentially drive itself, eliminating overlaps and giving us perfectly straight rows. GPS tells the planter and sprayer exactly where we've been before, so we don't plan any extra and we don't waste any spray. It shuts off rows and sprayer nozzle 1 at a time as they get to an area already covered. Since chemicals and seed cost us over $100k a season, eliminating waste there is very beneficial.
Farming has come a long way in the last 10 years.
.....and the three on-board computers?
1 for engine controls
1 for harvesting controls (actual settings in the internal mechanisms)
1 for GPS/yield monitoring system
We really only interact with the second 2, engine controls does everything itself unless there is a problem
