It is a relic of when March 1 was the start of the year.
It only bothered me to the extent that some old German records use 7ber to mean September, 8ber to mean Oktober, 9ber to mean November, and Xber to mean Dezember. I found it confusing at first.
Septem=7 / September=9th month
Octo=8 / October=10th month
Decem=10 / December=12th month
