Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #190: Springing Forward

Afternoon Lodge. Sitting at the hotel in Chicago...waiting to hear what is going on, as the others are at a brewery. I'd be there, but I just got here 45 minutes ago or so.

Of course today of all days runs late. Missed the tUMD game. At least I have tomorrow off.

I really get a kick out of this one aspect of my job right now. I'm working a project to migrate our applications to Windows 10, and a number of testers assigned to it are production workers who get a chance to show they're capable of more. I'm sort of acting as the project manager, though I don't get the title or pay bump (insert grumbling here).

At any rate, some of these testers are really trying to impress their bosses and my team as we have a couple openings, and this one guy tried to be exceptionally thorough on the test script he submitted to me, saving a copy to the project's SharePoint site. The file name he used was too long, adding the term "Regression_Script" and "[ABCD]_Automation" as the application name. I think this one guy was a little devastated when I had to correct him that "Automation" wasn't part of the application's name, and he made the file unusable because of that.

For those who may not know, Microsoft limits you to 255 characters for a filename, and that includes the file path/location as part of the name. So if the server name, paths and sub-paths take up 215 characters, you're limited to 40 characters for your filename. It amazes me how many Millennials don't know that when they grew up with the tech ingrained into their daily lives.

Uh... never heard of that one though I did kinda wonder what was the new limit after they upped it from 8 plus 3 for extension

The whole path, huh? What's Unix's limitations... just curious

255 has been the standard for MS products since Windows 98, at least, like 95. It's based upon 16-bit conventions, 16*16-1 (allowing for 0). I couldn't tell you what UNIX does.

Are the Frozen Four Travellers hitting the 1st place Twins @ White Sux game?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #190: Springing Forward

Had a nice impromptu lunch with some members of a beer group I'm in. Nice to put faces to names. Then swung by a local brewery to chat up the staff about some recent (good) developments they are going through (limited bottling/distribution). Now it's time to just relax.

So hanging out with friends at lunch, and chatting up a micro brewery is work, is that what you're saying? Tough job.

It kind of is. Dealing with people, even friends, tires me out. /introvert

Yes, there is a book on it, which I have read/own, and it really explained a lot of how I am. :o

I'm much the same way, still gotta give guff on that one, though. :)
