Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

Mayflies are harmless, other than making bridges slick when they all die on it. Between mayflies and mosquitos, only one sucks my blood and makes me itchy.

They are harmless, but dam annoying.

For mosquitoes, Noxzema helps keep them away. Not kidding.

I'm certainly not looking forward to the mayflies once we get to Alabama.

I've had swarms show up on my radar on the boat. Brutal.

Winner winner chicken dinner. May flies barely register as a nuisance. They are everywhere though. The nasty stuff? Black biting flies, deerflies, horseflies and mosquitos? No where to be found. Even last week at Itasca there was no bugs. I am not complaining but it is odd. My theory? Radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster is killing them. ;)

Good morning Lodge.

Woke up to 45 degrees. Awesome sleeping weather. The birds are chiping and the campfire is roaring.

Coffee is brewing. French toast (locally produced maple syrup ) bacon and fresh fruit is being served for breakfast.

Looks very calm. They have a live webcam. I assume you are camping there? A break from State and federal campsites?

We are at a federal site. Chippewa national forest stony point campground site 16.

Ah, there is a Stony Point Resort too, but I now see it's on Cass.

Yep. That's a decent spot but very crowded. Private spots tend to be a little bit more expensive. We can camp at a state/federal site for about $20 a night. Private spots go between $50 and $80 a night.

You've not seen the mosquito infestations we have here. With 11,842 lakes comes a great many mosquitoes. They breed in still bodies of water, and most lakes have those sorts of features to them. The lakes are both a blessing and a curse for this state.

THe mayflies are so bad sometimes you breath them in. Bug spray doesn't make a difference since they hover but rarely land even with repellent on. At least the others are repelled by the spray.

Good Morning Lodge!

gmann just saw pics on FB from the camping trip. Love the pic of you with the boys and dog. My first thought? Yeah, look at that kid in the front standing beautifully straight. Yeah, the one they said wouldn't walk :D
