Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

Was more than happy when lil decided to stop hockey right when he grew out of everything. A pair of trainers ever 3-4 months and a pair of spikes is a helluva lot less expensive than skates, pads, sticks etc. Even happier when he decided to hate on lacrosse after we had the a55hat coach that same yr. Another bundle of $$ (That guy really killed the love of the sport. all but 6 out of 20+ or so of the kids quit and never tried it again)

boy is wrapping up junior year. I keep checking off the last of each item that I will be buying him.

That said, it's all been worth every penny.

For *s and giggles, you should put the cost of it all on a spreadsheet and present it to him as a bill when he's ready to graduate. "Your mom and I have been talking, since your hobbies have been so expensive compared to your sister's hobbies, and this is what you owe us for the past 18 months of activities." :)

Why just the hobbies? On his 18th birthday, present him with a $200,000 invoice/bill for "net cost of raising, feeding, clothing, educating, and sportsing Gurth Jr. retroactive to [MM/DD/YYYY]". :D

It's a matter of keeping it somewhat believable, to elicit that real Oh **** response from the boy. If you start it off, "We knew there would be costs with feeding, clothing, sheltering and even entertaining a child. What we hadn't anticipated is just how much more expensive your choices would be over what we find acceptable." So it's a lower number, somewhere in the five-digit range, and maybe he might soil himself a little. That's okay, it's all the better, so long as he's doing the laundry and it happens in his or a non-carpeted room. "Really, the $140 cleats is what sealed this decision for us."

Agree 100%.
Went from buying hockey equipment in 9th grade to XC Ski material in 10-12. Turns out he then needed two sets of skis - classic & freestyle - in 11th & 12th grade since he quickly became a varsity skier. Fun to watch and the lad ended up finishing (I think) 2 spots out of being all-conference and 5 spots from making the state meet.

He found the one sport colder than hockey.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

Spoken like someone who has never played/watched hockey at Osseo...:D

Screw that. Minnehaha. I swear that rink was actually colder on the inside than the rest of Minneapolis when it was -5F on Valentine's Day back in 2008. My pick up group at the time had a game there that night. WPoS, another skater, and I were comparing who had the reddest bellies after the first period. So cold. So cold.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #183: The Final Approach To Off-Season

As for sports equipment, yeah that gets expensive. I drew the line at $150 for a softball bat. They can go twice as much, quite easily, and that was for a beer league!

But, if it's worth it in the end, it's worth it.

Went and voted today, and one of the poll workers recognized me and was asking me about how long I worked up at Sheplers Mackinac Island Ferry. I only did that back in the summer of 1999. Who in the blue thunder are you lady and how in the blue blazes do you remember that?? Not a clue as to who the hell she was.

Lil had a game where it was -7F outside and some bozo left the Zamboni doors open. The kids were dripping water on the bench and it was freezing on impact. Bleeding cold.

Howdy Lodge. Beautiful day here today. Possibly record-breaking in the temperature department. Waiting to hear if I can head up to campus today to pick up my game tickets for this weekend. I'd really not have to deal with Will Call.
