Out of curiosity, I looked up a trip via Amtrak from MSP to Greenville, NC, since next year we have to go down there for my wife's (and pb's) cousin's wedding. Holy ****. What a joke. Why is Amtrak still around? I picked a random Friday to depart, the first thing it says is "you can't depart until Sunday". Ok.... Then the route it gives me takes me from MSP across North Dakota, Montana and Idaho to Portland, Oregon. Then I'd have to change trains and go from there down through San Francisco to Los Angeles. Change trains. From there across Arizona, New Mexico, Texas....all the way to Atlanta, or somewhere around there (I'd given up care by that point), and eventually to Greenville. Total cost, almost $600. We would arrive 8 days after after my original date of departure. Its time to pull the plug on this bull****..
Oh, and I could fly there, with 1 layover, 3 hour trip total....$443

You could listen to a crapload of Rush on that trip.

I had an office in Spokane. I scheduled a meeting shortly after 911. I had a manager that lived in Appleton, WI. He refused to fly so he took the train. If memory serves correct it took something like 6 days one way. 12 days of travel and 2 days of meetings.

How to get to Leeds: follow the smell of sh*. Stop when you actually hit the sh*.

Speaking of which, a bum took a sh*t in the stairwell at work today. Thankfully, I didn't get *too* close before spotting it. Sometimes being connected to the skyway system isn't a plus.

As for Amtrak...well.....

Honestly, trains have been slower and more expensive than planes for the last couple decades. I have no idea how they are still running (out east, that may be different).

That, and our total lack of High Speed Quality railways here as well doesn't do Amtrak any favors. for short hops, rail can go toe to toe with planes when you factor in the time you gotta spend checking in early for security at the airport, loading the plane, and any other delays like weather. Right now they don't have railways that would handle High Speed train travel, and too many at grade crossings as well. There's a lot of train accidents in the US that wouldn't happen if more at grade crossings were eliminated.

I've never spent more than 20 minutes in airline security lines. Ever.

It is much cheaper to take the train from DC to NY than to fly from DCA to LGA. Also I can post on USCHO from Amtrak. :D

That's because you rarely fly.

Airplane WiFi is a scam. $15+ for a horrible signal and speed.

Totally agree, though JetBlue's free wifi is not bad when they have it.

What....no reaction to my previous post??? ETA....beat me to it!

I don't remember the last time I was on a plane without wi-fi.

802.11b was still the wi-fi standard when I last flew, and you were lucky to get it in an airport let alone a plane.

We had an interview candidate on yesterday's train derailment. We've heard that he's fine but it does make it hit home a bit that these events are real.
