Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)
Good morning Lodge.
French toast and bacon and locally grown fruit for breakfast.
I know I'm a little late to the party but both little g's and now mrs. g and myself have been nominated for the ice bucket challenge. I get the premise of it but I wonder how many people actually donate to the cause versus do it for the novelty?
I did both. As did everyone I know.
Was thinking about it this AM. My news feed on FB is filled with people hating on the challenge, on people who do it and on the people who pay and don't dump. Man, this is one sick society. We are so wired to judge and find fault even a positive thing turns into a vehicle to judge each other. It started out as a challenge to increase awareness and/or raise $ for research or so the organization can pay for marketing to increase awareness. Now you have the little people who are doing it for the original purpose and the 'famous people' who can't do anything right no matter what they do.
If you are flamboyant you get dissed- see the guy with the helicopter and glacier water or multiple other celebs. If you are a politician you
really can't win. If you dump then you are attention seeking- Kennedys for those around my neck of the woods had a lot of people making a huge deal they had $$ and should have given a huge chunk of change instead of dumping. Missed the point totally- this hit the news and spawned a whole story on ALS, the point of the challenge.
If you write a check you get judged too- huge pic on my feed showing the president and yapping about how he won't man up and wrote a check. Thousands of people posting agreeing. If he had done it there would have been a lot of numbnuts whining he should be more serious and he has $ to give. (not particularly a fan of his but crimminy).
Then you have Charlie Sheen who covered both bases by dumping a bucket of $10K over his head and challenging his buds to do the same. People were hating on him just because he is who he is.
Saw a great thing done by some broadcaster from NZ or maybe Australia saying to stop whining about the waste, this that and the other thing and instead everyone should give if they are able to some charity as they all need them. / end rant. Phew, that felt good.
PS- we have a guy in our town who has ALS. They have fund raisers every yr. The one that just happened almost tripled its participation and $ raised because it coincided with the start of the Ice bucket thing.
