Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)
I have had the flu shot 2 out of the last 4 years. The 2 years I have had the flu shot I have gotten sicker than hell. I'm sure the professionals will say it's coincidence but I'm not sold........
Also, when I went to the doc earlier this week I asked why I was so sick even though I got the flu shot. Doc response? "Oh the flu shot doesn't protect against this strain of flu." So I asked, "why all the pressure that everyone needs to get a flu shot?" She started to explain the how's and whys. I get it and I realize that certain people in our population need certain protections.
Within my profession I sit in on credit presentations of large businesses (hospitals and clinics included). They run just like other businesses and need to turn a profit. Now I know at face value medical professionals want what's best for the patient. However, I see he other side of the business. I see the side of the business that tracks expenses and revenue. I see how detailed the revenue expectations are. Details that break down profit and loss per doc per patient visit. It's eye opening. Bottom line, Docs are required to generate revenue. They generate revenue by pushing test$, pushing drug$ and moving quickly to the next patient$.
With that being stated, the g family has been surrounded by wonderful professionals regarding little g. Without them the little g story would be very different. However, we are always pushing back if we feel tests or medication or procedures are not required.
No offense les. Just my .02 worth in a nut shell.
We don't always have one strain of flu per season. A few yrs ago we had the H1N1 and then the originally predicted one. We had 2 waves here that yr that overlapped each other.
Flu vaccine is 70% effective even if they hit right. You may not get total prevention but you most likely won't be as sick as you potentially could be- shorter duration, less intense sx. If you feel sick that doesn't seem much but if you got the real deal then you would be thankful to have the mild version. There is some indication that even the wrong vaccination may boost immunity a bit.
My theory (anecdotal, not research supported) is- a) people go to get flu shot at 'clinics' where tons of people show up at once- great germ pool. They catch stuff there and then complain they got sick from the shot. b) It is physically impossible to catch flu from the shot- it is a dead virus. It does challenge the immune system. If you are sick or are getting sick when you get the flu shot you are toast. Once you catch one thing you are behind the 8 ball.
We don't make a lot off the flu shot in my office. State supplies some. We make diddly on the rest. Strain on the office resources. Definitely not viewed as a revenue generator in my place. Some insurances don't even cover it at the office but make people go to a pharmacy (great continuity of care there! they penalize us if the person doesn't get it but they won't let us give it

)
We try to keep people out of the office- testing for flu is very time consuming- holds up a room for 15 minutes and then it needs to be swabbed down. We do not have Tamiful here despite that jacka55 Dr Richard Besser telling people their Drs aren't doing their job if they don't treat. No availability at all. And, despite all the ads it is not recommended unless the person would be at risk or have someone in their home who is at risk. Otherwise- NO TAMIFULU!!!!!11!!!1!! So add another 5-10 minutes telling people the TV has misinformed them and still have people believe we are withholding care because we get our jollies out of it somehow. Total room time before it can be used again at least 30 minutes. No revenue there.
You would be shocked how many people insist it is their
right to come be checked when they think they have the flu. It is astonishing how many people don't know the basics of self care- take Tylenol, hydrate, go to bed. Even if they do know that, it is our job to make it go away with some type of magic. They keep calling triage a couple of times a day because godamit they (or their kid) don't have time to be sick so we have to fix it. Noooo revenue there either. Unlike lawyers we can't charge for phone advice and if we follow CDC guidelines we take a huge hit on resources with no income generated at all. Unless there is a comorbidity that increases risk they should not be seen. But of course they are special and they call the insurance company to complain when they are told to stay at home. Then they complain when they pay the co-pay and we don't treat them with the unavailable drug.
(NO strong opinions here at all!!) Phew. That felt really good. I get really aggravated between the entitled people and the TV people setting false expectations. ((It appears I have regained enough energy to type))
This thread seems to have survived several purges. I don't know why.
