Good morning Lodge. At the airport too early for my flight. Called for a cab to pick me up about 8:45 thinking my flight was at 11. Figured between traffic and wanted to grab a coffee or whatever, I'd have a nice amount of time. Turns out flight was at 11:55. Oh well. No rush. Get here and flight is delayed to 12:10. My window to gety connecting flight to Madison is shrinking....

Good Morning, Lodge!

Another interview today. The manager is a former co-worker of mine. That is how I was able to get my foot in the door.

Good luck. It's only 2.5 hr drive to Madison if you get stuck!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

Good luck!

Thanks! I am going to need it. I am considering driving to Prescott again today for the place that I interviewed with the other day as they are having an open house. I do not know if I should. Part of me to show that I want the position, but the roads might not be in the best of shape.

I don't know what they're like now, but the main roads weren't bad when I was driving into the office today once I got north of Apple Valley.

Update. I guess I will drive to Prescott tomorrow as they want me to come in to do a test. New Glarus anyone?

My 11:56 flight that was delayed to 12:10 now has a 12:15 departure. Incoming flight due to land at 11:31. Not sure if that happened, no plane at gate yet. Hoping there is a later flight to Madison as I think I'll miss my flight. Wish me luck!

Good luck! How's the screaming baby count at the gate?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

Right now it's at 1! I'm on board now waiting for rest of the passengers to board. And maybe 5% of them chose to ignore the woman at the gate that said to wait before putting your coat in the overhead compartment.

Happy Birthday Patman!!

Wish I did. I felt stymied. I ended up posting on the message board and one of my distant cousins found me. He does a lot of the research.

Many of the people coming over changed their names either as they hit the boat or when they got off. Example- my GGF was Emmanuelson, decided it was to Jewish sounding and changed to Anderson. The surname was not passed down to children until recently. They took your father's name and added either son or dotter at the end. So my GGF was the son of Emmanuel who was the son of Anders (so was Andersson). Some time in late 1800s ish they stopped using dotter as much and used son instead. I have access to everthing on ancestry so if you find something you want to look at let me know. SOmetimes if you go to the library they have access too.

Records are pretty good if you look at baptisms. Saw something on one of the genealogy bebsites that explained all this but couldn't tell you which one. Sorry!

Replying to this one again, as I have just made a breakthrough. I had an idea on this Sweden stuff, while I was sitting at my desk at work, quick did a search on my phone and BREAKTHROUGH! I knew the exact birth date of my great-grandpa's father, from his gravestone here, in the US. I searched the entire of Sweden's birth records for people that were born on that day, with the same first and middle initials as my great-great grandfather. Knowing that the last name was changed, but not having confirmation of what it used to be, I couldn't search the last name. I figured the first and middle initials may be the same, even if the actual names changed slightly. Sure enough Frank Oscar was originally Frans Oskar, and the part that threw me off originally, I thought the last name would Svensson, since I knew his father's name was Sven, was incorrect. His father's name was Sven, but in the birth records, he was given the SAME surname as his father, Larsson. His grandfather's name was Lars. Seems they were breaking from tradition at that point and keeping a common surname. Now I'm finally getting somewhere! I have the exact name of the town he was born, and the parish they belonged too, should be able to uncover a bunch of stuff now!

Awesome!

My Grandmother ran into the issues of the sur-name changes when researching my family tree. To also add to the confusion, apparently whatever port of entry you had, if the immigrant agent couldn't understand you, he'd just write down a close approximation. One of my great-great grandparents was a "Dionne" from Quebec. It somehow became "Young" at the border.

My Grandmother was able to get past a road block thanks to the Detroit Tigers. She never could find the correct spelling for the pronunciation of Joaquin until Joaquin Benoit pitched for them. :D She has since called him "her fellow countryman," jokingly since we're absolutely not Dominican.

So, got to O'Hare and found out my flight to Madison was cancelled. Got to the Madison gate. They said they couldn't get me on a flight till 7:35am. Not going to put me up in a hotel but gave me a sheet with an 800# for discounted hotel rates. Or they had a bus, got a voucher. Leaving at 4pm. What about my luggage? Oh, that is going on the 6pm flight. He didn't know if they would bring my luggage to my hotel. Or maybe I could go to baggage claim and see if they could grab my bag.

So....go down to baggage claim, waited in a long line. Saw I got a voicemail from American, they actually booked me on the 7:35am flight tomorrow. So, made a decision to stay. Called Hilton 800#, booked a room at O'Hare Hilton. Got to the baggage desk. They said they could pull my bag before it got on 6pm flight, it would be out at 4:18. Great. Headed to the Hilton to check in. Got there, they didn't have the reservation, showed them the email confirmation and was told that it was at the Rosemont O'Hare. Arghh! Asked if they had rooms, they did, cost was more than 2x what I got at the other hotel. Decided to go to the Rosemont. Called them to see if they had a shuttle. They did. Went back to baggage claim, it was before 4pm, but yay! My bag was there. Walked all the way to the bus center. The 4pm bus to Madison was right there. Asked the driver what he thought about the drive, weather-wise. He wasn't helpful. Said it would take 3 hours. Looking at the weather, I'm thinking, 6 hours. Took the shuttle to the hotel and here I am. Need to take a 5:25am shuttle back to the airport. Hope my flight takes off.

I have all but 1 line back all the way back to either Sweden or Norway (great-great-grandparents, or older), and only 2 of them have I decoded the names from when they were in Sweden. I encountered the name change on the boat thing, we went from Svenson to my current last name when coming to the US. The other line that I traced back that far didn't change their name, they were Andersson in Sweden, and Anderson in the US. From what I can tell, Norway is going to be a bit tougher than I've found Sweden, and Sweden has been tough.
I would recommend posting you have some info on ancestry and what you are looking for. You would be amazed. I have had people reply 2 yrs later and found out things I had been searching for 20 yrs!

Way cool. If you get on ancestry and click the button for those who are also searching for them you may get a hit. The Swedish guy I am in contact uses My Heritage

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

I'm sort of curious as to the details of my heritage. My great-grandparents on my dad's side were into that, and kept written (now lost) records of ancestry. I know they said that some ancestors could be traced back to Columbus' voyage. However, the time and money spent would not really be worth it to me. I know the basics, and from that point on, to paraphrase: when you have to print the truth or the legend, print the legend. ;)

I know I'm mainly Irish, and secondary Norwegian. Some other stuff in there, sure, but those are the big ones.

If you're even mildly interested we could spend a couple hours on my account and probably hash out the basics back several generations. May as well get as much as possible out of the $30+ per month. It isn't just limited to my family that I can look up.

les, I did try posting stuff on the boards there, and I already had a guy (I think from Sweden) respond 3 times with 4 or 5 big pieces of information (emigrations, death dates, moving, re-marriages, additional births, etc.).
