Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #171: On Turkeys.

I am NOT happy with the MNDOT performance today. None of their usual excuses apply today. They often say "it was too cold for the chemicals to be effective" today it was right around 30 so no problem for plain salt, far less their fancy compounds. They say "the snow fell while the commute was going on, too many cars on the road" but today it fell between like 3 and 6 AM. There was no reason they could not have had the major highways basically clear when the commute started at about 6 AM. I remember when I used to be proud that we in MN could handle a little (or a lot of) snow. Not anymore. :(

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #171: On Turkeys.

Good Morning, Lodge!

Home again today. Hopefully, the last day I will be home. I am feeling a lot better, but still fatigued. I think it helped that I finally slept for more than 2 hours at a time.

As for MnDOT, they can blow it out of their you know where. I have not once ever been impressed with them since living in Minnesota 10 years ago. They know what the forecast is. They have pre-treatment materials, and they are too lazy to get out there to make the roads somewhat better.

Morning chaps.

Guess what day it is!?

Anyways, just another weekday for me today. Should reach 50 today.
Well, Happy Birthday! I would think that you would be sure, but I know that math isn't permitted in tLodge! ;)

You haven't experienced anything until you see DC attempting to deal with a snowfall.

OTOH, the last few winters DC and the suburbs have put down more pre-treatment material than we have received snow. :D

I always loved that the stores would run out of milk, bread and toilet paper if snow was predicted. An inch of snow and it's time to prepare for armagedon. Although, as a kid, getting out of school for a dusting of snow was fun (except there was not enough snow to play in).

Been there, done that. Was there when the area got like 24" in one event and people abandoned their cars on the beltway. That made it easy for what few plows they had. Must have been the winter of '87-88 or '88-89.

I was born in Bowie, MD, then moved to MN when I was only a few months old. My brothers, all much older than me, tell stories about how everyone would go crazy when even the smallest bits of snow fell. They'd bust out their sleds and find the nearest hill.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #171: On Turkeys.

We haven't seen a whole lot of snow; been right in the edge all night. This is fine by me as with the cold weather coming, the lakes should make an inch of good ice a day for fishing purposes.

"Huh. It snowed." - Jeep Wrangler owner

Subaru Outback owners scoff at the arrogance of Jeep Wrangler owners. (They're proven throuhg (IIHS?) testing to be the best vehicles for maintaining traction in all on-road conditions.)

80 ft of driveway that doubles as a luge run. Up in in 8+ inches of snow like driving thru hot butter. The guy next door has a army grade Humvee that can't make it up my driveway in the same conditions as my Subaru. :D

Yup. Three years ago the goalie on Jr's team lived at the top of such a drive. After we got him to and from games his mom traded her BMW SUV for an Outback. Mrs. has the Outback today - I have to make do with the Imprezza.

Also, after they go flying by me I get to see the Jeeps in the ditch further down the road. :p

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #171: On Turkeys.

Having one of those days. The kind where you feel like you can't get out of your own way. Then I went out and wanted to wash my brain afterwards.

Went to Walgreens. Line about 8 deep. They open a new cash register, ask for the next person in line. I am 4 back from the front, 2 behind the next person. I wait to see if the person in front of me is going to shift for a good minute then shift over to the new line. Another few minutes goes by as I am waiting for the person in front of me to finish. As the transaction is getting completed the biatch in the other line shifts over in front of me and says "I believe I am next in line" with such a look of insolence it could be a pictoral definition in Websters. My mouth hung open and then I said something to the effect that if she felt her emergency was that important she should just go right on ahead of me. She bulls her way into the space that isn't there, and continues to look back, smirking at me while the front lady finishes, making nasty comments the whole time. I commented something to the effect that I hoped she got all the jollies she needed because she certainly wasn't worth the effort at which point she gave me such an evil smug look I thought she was going to hit me (seriously thought she was going to swing). The lady behind me made some nasty comment at her as well. She finishes, turns completely around with this smug look on her face and moves almost into me before she whirls around and walks away. The check out lady was completely oblivious (or more likely not going to put herself in the way of psycho lady). When I left I actually scoped out to see if she was in a car near by. I was pretty shaken. All I needed was 2 frames at Walgreens. Now I need to go read the Good things thread to remind me nice people exist.

When they open a new line, I almost always make the wrong decision about staying or moving, but I would never have the audacity to do what that woman did. There is a lot to be said for having all checkers served by a single line.

Thought about one, but couldn't find a good deal. There is one Subaru dealer up here and they know they have the market cornered. Either pay their exorbitant prices, or get one shipped from the Lower, which is a whole other can of worms. Used wasn't much better, anything 4WD or AWD is $$$ here. Besides, the Wrangler looked cooler :D

To be honest, the Wrangler is a beast in 12 inches of snow, but it's only so-so on glare ice. Anchorage tends to be icier in the winter, Houghton is just snow, snow, snow.

I've heard NOTHING beats one of the old boxy Volvo wagons on ice.

suppose "eat my box!" was completely out of the question?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #171: On Turkeys.

So it was 78 in Dallas this week. I fly there tomorrow - MAJOR ICE STORM!!!! I am not calm at all. Seriously, I'm pretty freaked. I'm hoping I won't have any flight issues - my flight is in the morning. But the drive from the airport to the hotel and then the drive from the hotel to our office....depends on when things start to go bad. Friday morning, when we need to get back to the office for our event at 9am is when it will be the worst. Greeeeaat. WHY???
